Hello! I'm Fishes and this is my lore compendium. I'm just gonna dump a bunch of ideas I have down here. And maybe some stories too, when I feel like it.
As the title states; this is very much a work in progress. Please don't post yet!
Here's a few notes for my lore as of now:
I generally stick with site canon! This includes all the changes to beastclan lore. This applies to dragon sizes too, but there are exceptions.
All of the old pinkerlocke challenges I had done before are not considered canon anymore. They are linked here for historical purposes.

[hidden title="FAQ"]
Is this thread dead?
Nope, only sleeping. This project probably will never end, but I'm sort of in lore hibernation until I get some big ideas for the thread. Don't worry, I'm still sprucing up my dragon bios in the meantime.
Are you open to lore connections?
Yes! I haven't thought that far ahead, but I'd be open to it.
What are some of your lore inspirations?

Life's a beach at Harbor Haven, the sunny ports where a variety of dragons live. Here, there is something for those seeking knowledge, artistry, tidal cusine, and more. Although you'd think the docks and town are the mainstay, the native Water dragons know there's much more beneath the waves. As above, so below.

Dragons [emoji=silhouette size=1]
Dragons come from the Draconiformes family; which includes Ancients and Moderns. (Potentially 'ancient' and 'modern' could be signified as genus types; but I am not very well versed in taxonomy.) Each dragon breed would then be their own species. (i.e. Draconiformes spiral) [emoji=spiral tongue size=1]
Dragons may arguably have the greatest influence on an environment. Although the land has been shaped and formed by the elements of the ancient dragon gods; the children of these gods also have a major part in creating the modern world. Constructions such as the Spire are clear evidence of the power of united dragon society and what they can create. These influences do affect the natural world around dragons; but in a lot of cases these changes are too new for their environmental effects to really be seen upon Sornieth as a whole.
In Harbor Haven, dragons of all species coexist. Ancients generally live within the Sunken Library, where they work with Dumorne to preserve forgotten knowledge that only said Ancients know. This is not a rule, however: plenty of Moderns will come to share their ideas with Dumorne as well; and likewise Ancients are always welcome within the main town of Harbor Haven. For example, Salvage was one of the first Aberrations to come into Harbor Haven, and they still live there today.

I generally ignore breed food restrictions as labelled in the Encyclopedia.
Dragon sizes are generally canon, but I may have some exceptions.
Mirror Dragons are matriarchal, like hyenas.
Mirrors have a natural body language that is easily understood by other Mirrors, but can come across as confusing to other breeds such as Fae.
Mirrors, Bogsneaks, Guardians, and Wildclaws can chew through bone. Mirrors in particular rely on this to survive, and can digest the marrow.
Ridgeback Dragons are known for their sexual dimorphism. Males in particular have long, robust snouts; which are used to spear fish safely, detect temperature of egg nests, and for territorial/social dynamic jousting.
Snapper Dragons use their sharp nails and mouths to break open shellfish, which they can eat heaping amounts of. It's not uncommon for other creatures such as seagulls or otters to travel alongside Snappers who are piscovores.
Also Snappers can fly. [emoji=snapper tongue size=1]

Beastclans [emoji=beastclan rune size=1]
Beastclan species have lived on Sornieth for a long time; some say even longer than dragons. Their civilizations have contested that of dragons for land, resources, and other valuables. Dragons generally have done their best to avoid all out warfare; but sometimes combat still occurs. More recently, younger generations of dragons have taken it upon themselves to mend the rift between dragons and beastclans. Although this will take a long time; the effects have already been made clear and many Beastclans are willing to take a more peaceful approach when dealing with dragons.
The dragons of Harbor Haven have Beastclan allies of many kinds. Here are a few of the more common Beastclans you will see in Harbor Haven:

Maren

Miths

Centaurs

Harpies & Talonok

Kitsune
[columns][item=maren seahunter][nextcol]Maren
Maren of the Sea of a Thousand Currents have maintained a good relationship with Undertide dragons, who have lived among Maren for ages. This relationship has evolved to meet the modern dragon society as well. Maren translate, trade, and fish alongside dragonkind, just as their ancestors have done.[/columns]
[columns][item=regal silkmith][nextcol]Miths
Miths are naturally curious and tend to avoid fighting. Their inginuity and openness has led to a good relationship with dragonkind. The miths of Harbor Haven work as spellcasters, engineers, lorekeepers, and foragers.[/columns]
[columns][item=dunhoof ambassador][nextcol]Centuars
Centuars, like Maren, have often allied with dragonkind for countless years. In Harbor Haven, the centaurs often roam the streets to trade, study, or practice the arts.[/columns]
Further notes on Beastclans can be found here. (Not my resource; but I love this thread!)

[emoji=crystal ball size=1] Environment [emoji=crystal ball size=2]
The Sea of a Thousand Currents is mostly saltwater, but has some brackish portions. Due to this, early draconic explorers mistakenly labelled the Sea as 'freshwater', when it really is salty. Only those who really live within the Sea know this to be false; and the lie is still being dispelled to this day.
Regardless; the Sea is home to quite a lot of different animals and plants that are nowhere else on Sornieth. In particular, the estuaries provide safe nesting grounds for species that cannot breed without them, such as Mammertee.

Beastclans
Kitsune
Maren Seahunter
Familiar
Maren schools depend on a steady supply of fresh fish; preservation is difficult and taxes their sorcerers.
2890
Maren
Maren of the Sea of a Thousand Currents have maintained a good relationship with Undertide dragons, who have lived among Maren for ages. This relationship has evolved to meet the modern dragon society as well. Maren translate, trade, and fish alongside dragonkind, just as their ancestors have done.
Regal Silkmith
Familiar
Capable of spinning the cocoons of invasive Glow Worms into fine silk. These master Silkmiths produce a renowned fabric loved by dragons and beast clans alike, though they will rarely take part in the collection of the fibers.
1960
Miths
Miths are naturally curious and tend to avoid fighting. Their inginuity and openness has led to a good relationship with dragonkind. The miths of Harbor Haven work as spellcasters, engineers, lorekeepers, and foragers.
Dunhoof Ambassador
Familiar
The dunhoof herd of centaurs have been the allies of dragons for years beyond counting. This one is an ambassador to your lair.
0
Centuars
Centuars, like Maren, have often allied with dragonkind for countless years. In Harbor Haven, the centaurs often roam the streets to trade, study, or practice the arts.
Further notes on Beastclans can be found here.(Not my resource; but I love this thread!)
Environment
The Sea of a Thousand Currents is mostly saltwater, but has some brackish portions. Due to this, early draconic explorers mistakenly labelled the Sea as 'freshwater', when it really is salty. Only those who really live within the Sea know this to be false; and the lie is still being dispelled to this day.
Regardless; the Sea is home to quite a lot of different animals and plants that are nowhere else on Sornieth. In particular, the estuaries provide safe nesting grounds for species that cannot breed without them, such as Mammertee.

Foods native to Harbor Haven are often in the seafood category. Fish sandwiches with water lettuce are common among the working class; an easy to make meal with many kinds of toppings. Shellfish like olympia oysters or shrimp are delicacies, often saved for celebrations such as Wavecrest.
Tropical fruits such as coconuts, watermelons, plantains, and bananas are common fruits around the ports. Citruses like oranges, limes, or lemons are often required to trade for; as they are filled with nutrients that cannot easily be found at sea. Sour kelp is used as a replacement for these; as it can easily ward off scale scurvy. It's very popular among Fathom pods. The Tidelord's disappearance has made worship harder for many. New prophecies are few and far between because of this. The Tidelord's deep knowledge, which once was shared more openly, is now deeply coveted and protected. This is why Dumorne cares so much about his library. In recent times, those who ventured during the Unfathomable Odyssey were able to uncover a very important prophecy straight from the Tidelord. On the Naming of Dragons
Dragons of this clan come upon their names in many different ways. Generally, dragons are named based on their elemental alignment, personality, or their biological colors. Some dragons are already named when they come into the clan. Some dragons believe they must earn their names, and will wait for ages until they find the right one for them. Outside of these, there are a few naming schemes that apply, mainly for Ancient dragons.
[columns][emoji=aberration laughing size=2]_[nextcol] Aberration Dragons technically have three names. Each head is its own person, so they usually have separate names. As a whole body, both heads must agree on a third, unifying name. Salvage is a good example of this. One head is Salve, the other is Savage. They refer to themselves as Salvage collectively.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=aether laughing size=2]_[nextcol] Aether Dragons have quirky, charismatic names with many different origins. Many Aethers have chosen names based on words that have great meaning to them, or based on the sound or spelling. While perusing dictionaries and other documents (oftentimes while eating said documents) is often how they gain inspiration. An Aether individual may have impulsively decided on one name, and then a few days later, decide on a new one. Like Veilspun, these names have no bearing or indication on the individual's gender, or their gender expression. Zeitgiest is an example of these conventions.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=auraboa laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Auraboa Dragons have two names. Their first name is the one that they use in the physical world. Most Auraboas in the modern world will come up with this themselves. Usually they are based off of nature, fruit, plants, or other influences. An Auraboa's second name is the one they use in the Loop. A Loop name is very important and is not simply chosen, but revealed with time. For an Auraboa, sharing their Loop name in the physical world is a sign of extreme trust.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=banescale laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Banescale Dragons have names that come from music terminology. Due to the musical history and culture of their ancestors, Banescales of this clan have names associated with written music or song. Forte and Legato are good examples.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=cirrus laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Cirrus Dragons name their children after the virtues they hope to instill within them. In Cirrus culture, it is not uncommon for dragons to have long names, because it reflects the kind of person they want to become. Cirrus have unique body language to refer to themselves or their family, which makes it easier to refer to another.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=dusthide laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Dusthide Dragons often pick ancestral names, or names that they enjoy the sound of when spoken. As Dusthides are very loyal and family driven, their family names are often carried through generations, which can lead to very long name sequences. This also means that there are plenty of 'Jr's to go around.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=everlux laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Everlux Dragons have temporary names as children. Once they reach their first 'chapter' in life, their adult name is chosen. Everlux tend to choose names that sound fancy. They also choose names based on words they like, or their favorite fictional characters. As an Everlux grows, they may decide on a different name in a later 'chapter'; and they take great pride in this. To find one's true name is their highest form of self-discovery.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=gaoler laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Gaoler Dragons often have familial names, but most Gaolers prefer to keep the titles they have earned themselves. Gaolers usually have sharp sounding names, not caring to cater for 'aesthetics' or 'pleasure'.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=sandsurge laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Sandsurge Dragons generally have short names. When in a fast-paced workplace, they prefer not to have to spend too much time on words, and don't question the names given to them by their parents.[/columns]
[columns][emoji=thorntail laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Thorntail Dragons name their children after things they treasure. [columns][emoji=undertide laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Undertide Dragons have names that refer to an oceanic aesthetic. [columns][emoji=veilspun laughing size=2]_[nextcol]Veilspun Dragons have elegant or magical names, as reference to their origin and abilities by magic and trickery. All dragons are made of magic. While their physical bodies have strength of their own, the core of a dragon's might is through their magic. The draconic deities, each in their own forms, created the basis of all elemental magic across Sornieth. A dragon's elemental alignment, therefore, is reflected by the place where they hatched. The strength and magic inside the planet's leylines are key in determining this. The magic within the leylines seeps into dragon eggs, even from far away. Depending on their strength and elemental flavor, a hatchling can take on different elements and eye varieties. Generally, the visual eye type has no reflection on the dragon's resulting magical abilities, aside from their native element.
A dragon's born Flight does not limit the kind of magic that they can cast. With the advancements of magical scrolls and other enchantments, dragons of any Flight can cast magic that isn't their birthright. It generally takes good training, time, or energy to do so; and therefore one must be devoted to their study. A good entry point is to use magical objects to familiarize oneself with a new kind of magic.
There have been records of dragons born with too much magic, or too little magic. With all things, balance is key, especially in the arcane domain. If a dragon's magic reserves completely go out, they can die as a result. There are currently treatments that can help with these, but more research is needed so that all dragons can live their best lives without fear.[/columns]

Magic is unpredictable. While most dragons are powerful enough to cast it without issue; it is wild magic that is the most dangerous to dragonkind. Dragons who go blindly into spellcasting, alchemy, or other dark arts without proper care or preperation can see the adverse effects of strange magic firsthand. Some dragons can see it as a blessing; but others must fight these adverse effects for their entire lives. It is a delicate dance to treat such ailments, but modern studies in magical application makes healing them a more approachable subject.
Certain parasites, for example, feast on a dragon's inner magic reserves as well as their flesh. Other ailments could be genetic curses, passed from direct lineage. Perhaps the most dangerous of all is the force that nullifies magic itself: the Shade. While other things on Sornieth can snuff out magic; none but the Shade can do it as prominently or overwhelmingly. Although bits of Shade energy are left behind from the Deities' wars with it; it is typically not enough to cause a dragon's death. Do not take this to mean that Shade remnants are harmless: its effects on dragons and other life is still not fully understood. Those who have interacted with it directly often come back with knowledge of which they cannot speak.[/columns]
_
Aberration Dragons technically have three names. Each head is its own person, so they usually have separate names. As a whole body, both heads must agree on a third, unifying name. Salvage is a good example of this. One head is Salve, the other is Savage. They refer to themselves as Salvage collectively.
_
Aether Dragons have quirky, charismatic names with many different origins. Zeitgiest is an example of these conventions.
_
Auraboa Dragons have two names. For an Auraboa, sharing their Loop name in the physical world is a sign of extreme trust.
_
Banescale Dragons have names that come from music terminology. Due to the musical history and culture of their ancestors, Banescales of this clan have names associated with written music or song. Forte and Legato are good examples.
_
Cirrus Dragons name their children after the virtues they hope to instill within them. In Cirrus culture, it is not uncommon for dragons to have long names, because it reflects the kind of person they want to become. Cirrus have unique body language to refer to themselves or their family, which makes it easier to refer to another.
_
Dusthide Dragons often pick ancestral names, or names that they enjoy the sound of when spoken. As Dusthides are very loyal and family driven, their family names are often carried through generations, which can lead to very long name sequences. This also means that there are plenty of 'Jr's to go around.
_
Everlux Dragons have temporary names as children. To find one's true name is their highest form of self-discovery.
_
Gaoler Dragons often have familial names, but most Gaolers prefer to keep the titles they have earned themselves. Gaolers usually have sharp sounding names, not caring to cater for 'aesthetics' or 'pleasure'.
_
Sandsurge Dragons generally have short names. When in a fast-paced workplace, they prefer not to have to spend too much time on words, and don't question the names given to them by their parents.
_
Thorntail Dragons name their children after things they treasure. They often borrow from stories, words, or anything at all that is valuable to them. In their own specific language, Thorntail families have specific chirps and whistles to distingush each of their family members.
_
Undertide Dragons have names that refer to an oceanic aesthetic. Be it mythology, natural structures such as blue holes, or life forms like coral and fish, this is what usually inspires Undertide naming. Undertide also borrow names from Deepsea Maren on occasion, most commonly if one has been adopted into a Maren family.
_
Veilspun Dragons have elegant or magical names, as reference to their origin and abilities by magic and trickery. Veilspun may also have names related to insects or arachnids. Veilspun tend to prefer gender neutral names. This has no regard to their actual gender identity, which presents itself differently upon the individual. There are also tales of Veilspun stealing the names of dragons who wander too deep in the woods...

Long before the world was even a thought, there was music.
The universe sang a song in the emptiness, alone to itself. A lullaby for the things to come. An anthem for the stillness of space. Soon, the stars became notes, the planets formed melodies, and the song gained a chorus.
The gods of Sornieth could hear the song, and their creations added more to the melody that enveloped our planet. The crashing of war and conquest, the brilliance of creation. The magic at its core led to many different things, each beautiful and powerful in their own right. The elements had only just begun to claim their place in the universal song.
The music soon was heard by the otherworldly Shade. In defiance, it reached its arms across Sornieth, seeking to drown out the song of our planet. Multiple times, the Shade sought to deafen the song. But the dragon gods consistently returned to fight it. Their magnum opus, the Pillar, was meant to sustain enough elemental magic to protect the planet from Shade entirely. In rage, the Shade's final destruction was to eradicate the Pillar, causing devistation to the alliances made by the elder dragon gods.
But most Sornieth dragons already know this story. You have heard it many times, many ways, from different mouths, across generations. Perhaps you have not heard the story of what happened after the Pillar's fall, to the dragons who make a home in the Sea.
The Tidelord's first charge was to create a being in his own image. His first children soon became the Undertide, who could breathe deep in the waters where he soon created a palace. The Spiral Keep was where they communed with him. They soon took up the same interests as their father. Future sight, prophecies, and Water magic were the pillars of the Undertide; hoping to see ways they could protect the vast oceans from Shade influence. Directly with the Tidelord's influence, the Undertide had all they needed.
When the other Gods deigned to create new dragons, ones that were further removed from their Ancient first creations, the Tidelord stayed true to his kin. The Undertides soon became proud. As the only dragons yet made by the Tidelord, they believed they would be the only dragons created by him. The Tidelord, with his Sight, told them otherwise. But not all of them believed. Those spurned by the very idea of this swam deep into the Leviathan Trench, never to be seen by dragonkind again. But many still remained, their loyalty to their god unwavering.
The Tidelord's words eventually became true. When the first Guardian dragons emerged, this was the final straw for the Undertides. A great schism occured among them. On one side, the prideful elders were outraged that the Tidelord would deign to replace them. On the other side, those who still felt loyalty to their god wanted to meet their new siblings. The fighting led to war, one that dragged the Undertides so deep that those who remained were forced to go deeper into the Leviathan Trench to either avoid the violence or simply out of shame.
The Tidelord was wrought with horror that his children would so easily break these bonds he had made. The Guardians were left alone and confused about what had happened before them. The Undertides became legend and myth. The Tidelord was now forced to entrust his Sight to the Guardians as well, and soon they took up the mantles of being Seers. But Guardians too were given protective hearts, so that they would hopefully bear more compassion and love for their family. And soon, more variety of dragon breeds now could enter the Sea, as the number and diversity of dragon species grew.
Among the Sea, things went well for Water dragons and their god. But eventually, a great storm swept through the area. In the worst hurricane any dragon had seen, the Tidelord vanished. And that is how it is still today, unfortunately. Water dragons all over were devistated by the loss. The prophets can no longer See as they used to, or Speak from his wisdom. The song that spread across our waters has now stilled. It is to the point that many Undertide have breached their prideful exile, and also the travelling Fathoms have chosen to return to the Sea. The Tidelord's magic will sustain as long as he is alive, but it is still very worrying for all Water lairs that our very own god is no longer bellowing his prophecies.
We of the Water flight have had a long journey, a broken family. In my studies, I hope to gather as much information as possible so I can hopefully mend it. I don't think I can find Tidelord myself; but I can still provide a beacon of hope, and a respitory of knowledge. Our Water flight has been secretive, deep, and seemingly unknowable to many dragons. I hope to bridge that gap with my Library, for all dragons who wish to know, and to be a bearer of truth within my Flight.

When the Undertides left the Sea, they took their ancient knowledge with them.
When dragons of the modern variety started to appear, they were able to create things like tablets, scrolls, or artwork. You can't really do that in the middle of an ocean. There are some kinds of dyes that can be painted on water, yes; but these were saved for the elites of Undertide society who had space to paint on. It is why the Preservation Guild was so intrigued by the abyss. It is not just the fossils and life that has been sustained, but the records of Undertide from the past. Most of it is faded, now; due to salt and water and years gone by. So in practicality, most Undertide did not record their history this way.
We instead told our stories through our voices. Our songs, the spoken word; this is the crux of all Undertide knowledge. With no one to Speak it, much less our god, much of this knowledge has been lost to time. If there are those who remember, I pray they might find us and share it. Sometimes I fear that there are things that aught not to be shared at all. But for what it's worth, I think there's more than enough that is worth recording. If we can piece together our broken history, we can once again weave the song that the Tidelord started for us, with a wide family as one united chorus.
