TOPIC | How Did You Get Into Dominance
I'm more of an occasional Fire dom participator, especially because I've been on hiatus a ton in the past few years. I train and exalt but it's on a pretty casual basis. I'm not formally involved in any of the dominance groups, but it's fun because a) exalting brings me money and dom helps motivate me to actually pick up fodder to exalt and b) nice IF raffle prizes. Currently, I'm excited for Flameforgers and have been stocking up a ton of fodder. I plan on using Warrior's Way to get some fodder training out of the way.

So I just wanted to ask if you participate in Dom, why do you do what you do? And how did you get there?

I had a similar experience. To me when it came to exalting dragons it was somewhat like exaltation=death. I loved to breed my dragons but lair space made me have a lore of keeping 1 hatch per breeding pair.

Then came 2018 and I spoke with my friend and she mentioned "So you don't read." As I didn't know how to explain exalting and other mechanics to her. That made me mad and out of spite I started reading. I was a former Mage (Arcanite) and I joined discord. I will admit I didn't understand the appeal of Gen 1 dragons before and I was very rude that one of the mods asked me to type differently so others could have the opportunity to share as well. I acknowledge that I was rude and I try not to be rude these days as I do want a sense of community.

While in Arcane I was reading about fundraising and I wanted to get involved in Dominance as I trained some of my 'permas' to level 25. I got an Eliminate drop back when they could drop from Woodland Path and some mages recommended me to change the stats of my Eliminate dragon when I got another drop. I was between Mires and Ghostlight Ruins those days fodder training and would mainly exalt when Arcane was pushing. I quickly learned about DOM Watch and other activities flights do during push weeks. I will admit I was a loyal mage and would rarely send my fodder to other flights compared to these days where I don't mind sending them to other flight's foddarts.

I switched to Light but felt intimidated by Light's discord server. I didn't share as much and well I kinda left both Arcane and Light flight's discord thinking I wouldn't be associated with it as I was feeling like leaving Flight Rising. I soon joined nature and went to their discord server. It actually felt pretty chill and still does even if I am no longer in Nature I sometimes browse through the shared servers.

These days I hatch all fodder in the same day and train them even if 10+ dragons is overwhelming. I am in no hurry to train them though and I still look forward to foddart threads. Sometimes like yesterday I exalt profit some fodder for treasures but I'm learning to use the daily bonus exalt compared to just training any dragon.

As for why do I do what I do? I like being able to commission artists and also earn some treasures outside of maxing out fairgrounds. I have too many gene projects and the daily fairgrounds isn't enough to actualize the plans.

I'd been playing solo for about two years, visited the forums occasionally (mostly browsing the giveaway board for hidden gems) but never, like, interacted with people, and certainly had never even looked into what dom participation entailed. On kind of a whim I decided I ought to join my flight discord (Fire, at the time) and it was, coincidentally, just before Brightshine, so I got to jump right in to an in-flight coli scavenger hunt to get warmed up to being part of a community. Had a good time, so when the next dom push came, I signed up to be an attendant, and everything just snowballed from there :>

edit: And why do I do what I do (which is largely attending, personal fodder training, boarding dragons for future pushes)?

Well the money doesn't hurt. Got a lot of gene projects ;P

But more than that, it's being part of an active community who get really fired up about the thing we all love. I left Fire for Earth when I couldn't see the enthusiasm anymore (& now I'm planning a vacation back since they've revived and seem to be only picking up more steam) and let me tell you, the difference it makes when you're not just stuck in your own lane, pushing forward all alone, but surrounded by people who will encourage each other into success...!

There's also the fact that it's kind of dragon sports, but if sports were about everyone getting a turn being number one. Dom isn't just about your flight's success and having a few really good players, it's about coming together and helping everyone succeed, regardless of flight or experience or what your limitations are. If you can train one dragon, you're welcome in dom. If you can hatch one fodder nest, you're welcome. If you can donate just a little bit to your dom bank, or buy one badge from another flight, or whatever your "I want to join but I can only -" is, you have a place in dom just as much as the people who can train and exalt, like, 20k levels in a week.

It's fun to be part of a team but also get to enjoy other teams' success. I love buying or earning badges from other pushes, or browsing foddart, and I'll certainly take every opportunity I can to support Fire while I'm out of flight, because I still love where I started and love watching them come to share the joy of this bonus game we've all created together.

I got into dom pretty early on! I moved to Ice about two months after I signed up, joined their Discord, and heard people talk about Dominance. They explained how it works to me, I decided to give it a shot, and here I am 5 years later.

As for why I do what I do, well... money is a good incentive. But I also enjoy working towards a common goal with other people and getting others fired up.

I also like that I can participate however I want. Every level counts, so it's fine if I can't train a lot a certain week. If I can't train at all, I always have a stock of unleveled adults to chuck at other people. I'm not big on badge collecting, but I still buy badges from time to time (usually my flight's) to help fill the bank. And I haven't hosted any "big" programs yet, but that seems fun and can get others fired up, so I plan on doing so when I move to Fire next month.

Looks like fire is going to really be picking up the steam.
Ahem. Sorry.

Anyways I absolutely love this thread and all the stories y'all have been telling. I love how Dominance is surprisingly wholesome; you'd expect a competition like it to spur more fighting.

I only recently got back into flight rising like... 2 weeks ago. (I'm always in and out lol) And one of the first things I did once I checked out what was new was check out the lightning Dom discord. Instantly got new friends (hi Scultone!)

nb: I may be misremembering some stuff, as I struggle to remember what I did last week let alone five years ago lol

I’ve always been a casual exalter, as I’m the opposite of a hoarder (declutterer? whatever you want to call it) and I needed ways to purge excess dragons from my lair. One of the first things I did in the game was level & stone my progens, so I’ve always been heavily into the coli. I did all this in isolation though. I didn’t participate in dom (or my flight community at all) until late 2022 after my big hiatus.

I’m pretty sure the first dom event I participated in was an in-flight RP event for NotN 2022. It wasn’t even a dom event per se, just a fun thing that was running at the same time as the push. I really enjoyed that & it remains one of my favourite fire flight memories, even though I’ve since purged the majority of dragons I wrote lore for in that event lol. My involvement with dom has been on and off since then - ranging from completely ignoring pushes to treating a push like a full time job (which on top of my actual full time job isn’t healthy, so I’ve had to step away from the scene a couple of times to protect my health lol). I’ve done just about everything under the sun associated with dom - gunning for the exalt leaderboard, foddart, event running, push running, spreadsheets, attending, boarding, mercing, etc. It’s been easy to get involved in things in fire, especially this year, as there isn’t that established structure I hear about in other flights - anyone can jump in and do anything if they’re willing to put in the time and the effort, and the flight will get behind it.

I think at the end of the day though, my interest will continue to wax and wane as it does with most things in life. I’ve never loved dom, even though I have put insane amounts of time into it. I don’t know if I’ll ever recapture that feeling of doing my first push completely for fun & having nothing but a good time, but hopefully one day I’ll be able to find that sweet spot again. Until then… see you in the coli I guess lol

I joined plague in the middle of a push earlier this year and was very surprised to see how much more active the plague action house was. Once I learned why I decided to try for myself and IMMEDIATELY got addicted to that sweet sweet treasure (I had been doing coli for fun for a while)

Used to not like exalting until I discovered fun dom events and the amount of treasure I could get. Fire's dom revamp was also an influence in my participation (unless I'm tired/burnt out), I even found myself liking being an attendant (though I did feel lost once the push was over lol, that part's not fun).

I got into exalting because I enjoy coli grinding and was saving to buy sprites. Then there was a big dom battle - I think it was Wind vs Ice? - and it lit up the competitive part of my brain.

I love winning.

I'm not an artist and I'm not interested in organising and spreadsheets. But I have a maxed out hibden and a ton of time and I can exalt till my wrists seize up.

My first time dabbling in dom, outside of just exalting for my own personal income, was Fire vs Lightning in 2017 — it was fun collaborating with other people in my flight and through discord to flip the board. IIRC, even though we (Fire) lost, it really made me want to participate more. I also just like collecting badges, and coli/farming is probably the only activity on the site I can do consistently and enjoy.

I dabbled on and off for several years in Fire's dominance scene before ultimately moving to Water after looking for a more dom oriented scene, where I've had the most fun in pushes (both conquest and profit) in a while; though I hear Fire are making efforts to turn things around and I fully support them and hope to do so from an OOF perspective some time soon! (And, realistically, if I were ever to change flight again, it would probably be to return to Fire.)

Often I'll go all in and this results in burn out pretty frequently, but the low-stakes competition in dominance is probably what keeps me coming back, though. The money to be made from the coliseum and exalting helps , too. Until I spend it all on a push.
