TOPIC | Tell me your dragon project hard lessons
The two things that make it difficult for me is 1 I will avoid buying gem genes at all costs, ESPECIALLY for moderns. I still have refused to do that entirely, it's just. So expensive. The other thing that makes it difficult is I love Imperials. So a lot of my breeding projects are hamstrung by....you know. Can't just slap a breed change scroll on, haha.

A breeding project I'm still doing, and one of the few where I've got multiple separate pairs to try and get a pair with enough of the correct traits with only a 50/50 coin toss (lolsob "only") got the EXACT COMBO of genes and colors I was aiming for...............on a Nocturne. I'm going to be buried salty about it.

The G7 breeding project has actually been going...fairly smoothly, despite literally everything going wrong at some point. The hardest part was hunting for enough compatible, breedable dragons with pure Imp bloodlines past G2. I have some family tree plots I scribbled down to keep track during the planning stage that look like the sort of thing you'd see on someone's walls in a horror movie. I kept getting wegged, the bloodlines were lopsided so I've had to wait on breeding cooldowns for months, I accidentally bred the wrong pair once so that was a 2 month wait instead of 1.........agony. But once it all got settled, it was just a matter of like. Clicking buttons. but I would not recommend doing it to anyone who isn't also interested in doing lore/loves Imps, lol.

The very first scry I made was a Rose/Peach/Radioactive Aether. This was before I understood basically ANYTHING about the site, I'm talking like, I made this on day 3 of me playing.

So it turns out this color combo just does not exist. Like. At all.

It's also a real "no mercy" tert color mode bc the soap gene kind of HAS TO BE radioactive because it's got a really unique tint to it that basically none of the nearby colors lend to the project, so I can't even really be flexible with what is absolutely the most difficult part of this project. I've found a couple of G1s with a close enough range that I'm debating going for it, but the question is then do I bother breed changing them into Aethers or just gene up their hatchling should I ever get a hit. Also it does mean breeding G1s, a thing I also hesitate to do (except for ones I already bought pre-bred, which has only happened like, twice.)

The extra final little kick in the teeth is this is one of very few scries where the eye color....kind of does matter? At the very least my Water lair will absolutely not match it. So even if I do all of this I will have to throw myself on the mercy of nest rentals because if I go to all this effort it has to have matching eyes.

Pain. Breeding projects are nothing but pain.

Read the story of Clan Arisen's quest for a pure Gen7 Imperial heir!
have done two massive breeding projects in the past so might come back with more nuanced lessons in the future, but first thing that comes to mind is that if you use any kind of program that tints your screen orange at night to help make it easier on your eyes?

don't buy dragons the same night you make a gene plan. it might only look good with your screen tinted all orange

bought a g1 for 100kt before realizing my mistake... gotta figure out what to do with them now

I usually don't do breeding projects per se, but I do take up a lot of gene projects. I just found out the other day that stained is a crazy expensive gem gene.... i need like 4 of them. [emoji=thorntail size=1] Made worse by the fact that i've been playing for nearly 8 YEARS i should know this already *facepalm*

This thread gained so much more attention than I anticipated - it's been a little hard to keep up with all the answers, but I'm very grateful for every single reply! I've learned a lot of new little things already. @bugbug88 thank you for the hub link - I've skimmed through it and bookmarked it - I think it's gonna be great to visit it once in a while! It might be very simple, but your advice of adjusting the approach to the project might just be one of the most eye-opening tips I've heard here. I have a tendency to get stuck in a single method often, so remembering about the need for that flexibility will be very helpful. The examples you've given along with links to the dragon helped me understand it way better, too! @phdgirl simple advice is good advice too! Also, I've seen you on my other thread, the one about selling dragons - it's nice to see you again lol. Always good talking to fellow relatively new folks! [emoji=familiar heart size=1] @MonoRM holy moly, may RNG be kind to you and your project! XD Breeding dragons si truly a patience game, huh... I also feel you very much on the first comment about justifying spending on genes. It's not *that* hard to get the money and I always have a bunch saved up in vault just in case too, but man do I not want to see that number go down lol @loreanth very good point - something I always find myself forgetting... Do you try to stick to a certain number of pairs or projects to avoid that? I've had 7 projects going at the same time which due to lair space made my options for every single project very limited... so I'm testing shifting to fewer projects and more breeding pairs right now instead. @RunePriestTyr
I have learned that colors suck, eyes suck, genders suck, the 5 generations removed breeding restriction can go rot in the deepest pits of hell, and genes aren't all that hard :)
This is such a brilliant summary XD 100% signing under that - and I think it's a pretty great way to summarize things. @Ais I think this is the first time I see someone go a bit more in-depth about the color range they search for on AH - your tips are great, thank you! So from what I understand you try to get your projects done within 3 generations to avoid having to keep track of the lineage, is that right? Also, good luck on your new projects then! @Arisse your post read like a rollercoaster of a dramatic novel, I thoroughly enjoyed it but also holy- you've had some STRUGGLES, man! I feel for you. That Aether scry is gorgeous! I'm honestly surprised nothing close is in circulation, the color combo looks very flattering and fitting on this breed... Makes me think of comet moths, actually. Why do you hesitate on breeding G1s? Is it because of the value drop? Damn, I wish you all the luck in the world for making this dreamie come true! Do you have any sort of progress tracker thread or something? I'd genuinely love to see the progress on this journey if you're comfortable sharing! (no problem if not ofc!) What's a G7 project by the way? @ninety9wyverns what's a gene project, as opposed to breeding project? Is it strictly about gene-ing up a specific dragon? Damn, it is?? That's maddening, Tidelord love ya and best of luck saving up! I'm still not mentally ready to buy any genes for gems, the prices make my head spin...

@SkyeDragonsoul

I recently set myself a limit of 10 concurrent projects, but I think it might still be too high? Trying to find the right balance of number of projects vs number of pairs is hard. Buuut I'm also dealing with the fact that I don't want to put any of my projects on hold to try lowering the number so I'm perhaps not the best person to be asking XD

And as for number of pairs, I've set my limit at 30, because that's as many dragons as will fit on one page, and having more than one page is annoying to organize for me. I coooould probably do a few more, since I almost never have all my pairs at home, but this also works to keep from having space issues as often.

@SkyeDragonsoul yes exactly! Imagine you start with a g1 or a random dragon off the ah. Then you plug it in to the scrying workshop to see if you can find a combination of genes that you like better or that you think compliment the dragon's colours better, or that just is prettier. Then the "project" is to eventually give all those genes, and possibly a different eye vial and breed change to the dragon! Once the dragon is completely transformed, your gene project is done! :D

Of course, you don't have to change everything about the dragon, just the things you want to!

For example, my girl Bluemist was a g1 dragon that I hatched myself and "gened up". It can be a lot of fun!

@ninety9wyverns Oooh, yeah that is very fun! I've done something of the sort with my OG Thorntails!

ZapZap and KaBoom were the og hatches from Galore eggs. I've gened them up and left their original eye types since they're uncommon. I'm leaving ZapZap's tertiary as basic since Eldritch doesn't seem to fit the other colors - unless some future gene comes out that works better.
Bursztynek was originally an Auraboa with a gorgeous color palette, I think she's straight up one of my favorite dragons at the moment!

Your Bluemist looks incredible! I love how the accent plays with the color palette there. What breed was she originally?

ive managed to pull off quite a few nightmarish breeding projects, and the best advice i can give is cast a wide net on the ah. i know big color ranges arent ideal but you need quantity over quality initially. as long as you can keep track of which dragons are related eventually you will narrow down the range as you have more options to work with.
also, if someone has a dragon that could potentially help, do not be afraid to ask, i managed to make a project finish up MUCH quicker by messaging someone with a dragon with very close colors to what i needed, and it turns out they were breeding for something incredibly close as well. we managed to both get the dragons we wanted with the right eye colors by nesting their dragons with mine in my fire nests. cooperation is always valuable on stuff like this

also. re:ancient breeds. unless you can find two parents that are the same ancient, youre probably just going to want to bite the bullet and make the parents into tuns/mirrors etc for the short cooldown. if you want it to be a different breed than the parents, youd have to regene it anyway so youd just have to eat the cost of a scroll\

last thing is sometimes you gotta accept the goal posts move. sometimes youll find a scry you like better and you have to get a whole bunch of new dragons. it happens. just level and fodder the previous ones to make some of your money back.

also learn gene rarity tiers and dont be like me and just mush stuff together and hope you get the right one :sob:

@SkyeDragonsoul wow your thorntails are all so cute! Congrats on hatching a g1 primal, that's amazing! And i agree that Bursztynek's colours are pretty, her skin compliments her wonderfully <3

Thanks for your kind words on Bluemist. I believe she was one of my clanbound Banescale eggs but it's been so long that I can't remember! She could just as easily have been a nocturne, but i really wanna say she's always been a bane!

What were some difficulties, changes, obstacles and roadblocks y'all have had to deal with in your breeding projects?

For my recent one for a fandragon I was hesitant on calling it good as I aimed for a different tertiary color (ruby) BUT I hatched one with Crimson and since there is the lore of being connected to what is known as Crimson Dragon in the series I asked whether I should keep it for symbolism and someone mentioned yes so I decided to gene up the hatchling (and today they are an adult so I just have to get the apparel for them before considering them to be complete).

I have had multiple breeding projects though and I remember the Coatl one took me months but my current fandragon one is taking me almost a year. I found a parent recently with White Tertiary that I immediately breed changed after assay bloodlines. I will admit I accidentally sent a tert antique dragon a few months ago but the breeding project pair gave me another so now I am praying that my current nest with the white and antique tert give me a white female so that I can move to Light Flight again just in time for Valightine's this year.

How did you go about it?

I usually breeding change them to a plentiful breed so I can have more hatches in a shorter range of time except for Imperials in which case I got lucky to find parents for both breeding projects I had. I consider it an investment and have breed changed Imperials into plentiful even if they are less likely to sell. They'll most likely be exalted unless I trained them to 25 in which case they go straight to AH for 200g (unless unpredictable in which case it'll be 250g)

What new knowledge did you emerge with?

Always use search first. To be fair I used to check Auction House for X-off colors in the pairs that could potentially give me what I wanted. For the Tert Antique/White pair I used search to specifically look for white and found one. Don't give up and constantly look up search if your dragon is an XYZ as it is possible that someone hatched it. My first breeding project was an Orchid/Mauve/Rose and I managed to find one in someone's fodder tab but finding the mate took some time.

Some smaller questions I was wondering about were also:

How long (time-wise and generation amount-wise) do your projects usually take?

About 3-6 months. I've gotten used to looking at search for certain criteria, especially the specific color combo as I tend to have XYZs or X-off doubles and triples.

Do you give yourselves any specific guidelines/limits of how much you're willing to invest into or change your original plan of the project?

I don't really have specific limits and with the recent tert Crimson fandragon it's more lore related. I will admit I once scried a permababy coatl with the available breeds but I didn't like how the tert appeared on their wing so I decided to keep them as an adult. For the Crimson fandragon as they are mostly from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Series and usually have colorful hair I try to find dragons in the same color as the hair. Lately when I look at search and go through color I have a reference of the character to see if the colors match as I am quite picky and want the closest match as possible. This is why I rarely decide to settle (and also easy to fodder those hatches as only the one I liked most gets to stay in my lair). I can have multiple breeding pairs for the same breeding project with the Crimson one I had at least 3 breeding pairs for it.
