So I've been here almost from the beginning, and I've never been that big on skins, so I've mostly kept my festival chests intact rather than opening them. I'm thinking about selling, but I'm not sure if I ought to open them first or not - I don't really see old fest chests on the AH or the sales forum, but I'm not sure if that means nobody wants them or if they're just rare. Are there collectors out there?

I'm really curious about this too! I've got a few that I've been debating just opening and trying to sell the skins

There might be some collectors, though I don't know how many lol. I have a few chests myself, tried to offload them at some point and then gave up cause i'm lazy lol.

I often just give up and sell skins instead. I think there is too little of those who do collect these and I am not that patient (esp as some skins do sell a lot too)

howdy folks. i like dogs, baking, cooking, illustration, and high-fantasy stuff! you can find me at your local renaissance faire dressed up as an elf, probably :)
I like to swap mine during fests! There's a fest swap thread and it's a way to get the new skins when coli is giving you copies, but people also use it to swap old chests.

I think there's a market, just a small one? I've managed to get old fest chests to sell on a few occasions- although it could've been more for the skins inside than "collector's value," for all I know. :P

There are very few people looking for fest chests on the regular, and there are so many of them that it's hard to get someone to buy the specific one you've put up. If you price extra, that's another factor, but I imagine anyone dedicated to collecting them comes by them so rarely that they are willing to drop a little extra-- I am not sure how far that will go though.

I have had some success with selling mine but they're from recent festivals, so I am not sure how well old ones sell. Usually though I don't price them loads above the skin price, but they do eventually sell in my experience. I have frequently had to set the price myself because there is literally nobody selling the chests until after I post mine lol.

The skins will sell faster than the chests. Most people just search up the skin itself, not looking for the chest. It's not really reliable nor quick money in my experience to sell chests, but it's up to you.

Long answer from an old post: Yes, there is a market and it's small. Your buyers are generally collectors looking for stuff they didn't get/weren't around for and people looking for a deal compared to buying the skin inside. I also have more bad news; buyers are cheap and lazy. The problem with festival chests is that unless you know what's in it there's work involved in figuring out if you want it or not. Putting chests up on the AH takes forever since there your market is primarily people who are searching exactly for that chest and are most likely looking for a cheap one. The more reliable way to sell is to make a thread in Items for Sale and offer the chest at one price and list it's skin accent at a lower price (AH price). Post the skin preview next to every chest so that people know whether or not they want to buy it without researching it. If they want the chest they pay the higher price. If they only want the accent/skin go ahead and open it up yourself, collect the treasure and sell the accent/skin for the AH going price. Skin code for posting:
[skin=skinid]
I want to live in Theory. Everything works there.

Have you checked the Gem MP for Gene and Breed scrolls before buying an AH listing from me ending in 5g?
As someone involved in dominance and running raffles for lightning...the market is small, slow, and not worth the time it takes to sell as a chest vs. the skin.

Old festival chests are theoretically valuable to a very niche audience of collectors. Low supply, retired items, etc. The thing is that the demand is very, very low. And those who are into collecting them mostly already have their collections in good shape by now! So the chance that you have the specific chest that someone is looking for to complete their collection is low, let alone having that person find your specific sale.

I will note that current fest chests tend to sell more reliably than the old ones, especially during or right after their festival release: this is because collectors aiming for one of every chest each festival will be looking for the new ones that RNG failed to gift them. So you'll have more people looking for them in a pretty limited window. The chest swap threads that pop up each fest are a good place to find interested folks in fest chests in general too.

From the dominance raffle perspective, we get fest chests donated pretty often...and then re-gifted by people who win them as part of a pack with other items. People recognize an unopened chest as potentially valuable and donate it to the bank rather than opening it themselves. And they certainly are a nice addition to themed packs! But those packs are often some of the last to go in my experience, often ending up in the unclaimed leftovers. So we end up having them languish in our bank because they're just not that popular.

For current fests, our teams-based program immediately opens any chests to get the money and stockpile/sell the skins on the AH. The fest skin market is also fairly slow, but certainly faster than the chests.

If you do want to try selling them and don't mind being in it for the long haul, Nightwind's comment is the best way to go about it. But if you just want to liquidate, crack open those chests and try to sell the contents directly instead!
