TOPIC | How do you decide breeding pairs?

After having some input on whether to keep breeding or stop a breeding project (with the result being stop and call it successful) I feel a bit like "What the heck? That's 6 dragons that form 3 breeding pairs and I am giving them the boot [as I usually do with my breeding pairs.]". I know it's temporary but I am a firm on my rule of "Only keep the aimed for scry/colors and gender and exalt everything else once successful." I don't sell my breeding pairs as my goal scries tend to be off-doubles and even knowing that it was hard to find the parents I don't have the consistent urge to sell them although rare color combos. This leads to the question of how do you guys decide the breeding pairs whether hatchery or fodder? I recently regened a pair of dragon keepers in my lair with the idea that if they were keepers of the same year to form a breeding/fodder pair. Here are the 2 of the Keepers I had self-hatched from some dragons from 2016. The Pearlcatcher was originally a Fae and I did Assay Bloodline before yeeting them from Den into the active nest:

If the dragons are close enough in design that the hatchlings can be themed (and you LIKE them), then you could totally do a hatchery pair! If they're not so close and the results are all over the place, then I would say they're fodder.

It's worthwhile to have a few fodder pairs just to keep the nests populated and on rotation, but outside of that, you could just exalt.

Personally, my hatchery pairs have a theme and lore. If I'm not inspired by them to do a theme and lore, but I want to keep them, then they're fodder pairs if I'm ok with breeding them.

I do plan to have my direct breeding project parents as another hatchery pair, because why not? It's a ready-made set. If they don't sell, then I exalt.

I don't do the hatchery thing, but I do breed my own fodder. I built all of my pairs since I'm a G1 lair and I just keep actively breeding the ones that make me happiest. If I need more room in my main lair, the ones I don't like breeding as much get shuffled off into the hibden.

I don't distinguish between fodder/not fodder. I breed all my dragons because I enjoy breeding and I sell all the offspring at fodder price to keep the lair slots open.

I decide based on breed and gene rarity, so that my breeding pairs are as close as I can get to a 50/50 chance of inheriting from both parents. It's more fun that way and it would annoy me to have a gem gene on a dragon that none of its offspring could have. I have no eye for colours so I just check out the predicted offspring button to make sure they won't all be sewage coloured and call it good.

very shrimple: go to dragon search, input the colors within a range of 2 to the dragon i want (e.g. banana would be yellow to flaxen) (i do them seperately instead of with the range so i can easily remove colors)
then look for a pair that has "decent' chances to produce the one i want, hope theyre fodder/for sale, and maybe get a good pair :)
breed doesnt matter cuz theyll be made plentifuls anyway, unless its a gem breed or an imperial
as for genes, if theres multiple gem genes i try to aim to get pairs that have them but uh
sometimes they dont exist .
so... just gotta buy em

i'll fix this at some point
I basically make dragons that I think are pretty and that I would want to own! :) I breed and exalt my own fodder but most of my funds come from glimmer and gloom and flipping dragons occasionally so even if my dragons were for sale, they'd not be my main source of FR income. That removes a lot of the edge of "I have to make something which will sell" So in the end, I just make dragons I think look nice. I also just create pairs that can create something pretty or have wide color ranges with a tert saver (I.e: Stained or Soap) to see what crazy combos I get!

Depends on the pair, but I generally enjoy wide ranges with Primary/Secondary being different on the warm/cool scale. So if I have a Gen 1 that's Blue-range Primary/Green-range Secondary for example, I might look for a mate with Purple or Black-range Primary and Yellow, Orange, or Red-range Secondary. And then Assay Bloodlines to make sure the tert range isn't bad.
