For an actual explanation, this all started because of the Hayes Code in the early 20th century, when Film and Television were rapidly growing industries. The Hayes Code existed to limit what could and could not be displayed on screen. Things like homosexuality, promiscuity, lying/stealing, basically anything that would’ve been considered immoral and degenerate behavior at the time (note there is an exception. Villains were allowed to be gay, promiscuous, more overtly sexual, and commit crimes on screen, but the code also made it clear that the bad guys must be defeated by the end of the program).
One thing that was closely monitored was overt sexuality, or directly displaying characters having sex or strongly insinuating sex (like when two characters are in bed with the blankets pulled up to their chins to cover everything). Those kinds of scenes weren’t allowed, so smoking, a very common thing back then, was used to subtly insinuate sexual tension and sexual relationships without breaking the code. A male character would light a cigarette after talking to the love interest, or light the love interest’s cigarette, and it was meant to signify them having sex between scenes.
As restrictions on sexual content loosened (towards the days where the under the cover scenes were starting to be permitted), the cigarette stayed because of both cultural norms and the lingering significance, telling the audience that the characters got up to something more than just sleeping.
By that point, cigarette smoking was heavily linked to sex in media, and it remained that way for a very long time. It’s not until more recent years with the amount of anti-smoking advertisements and health classes talking about the dangers of smoking that the link between smoking and sex started to actually be broken.
