Happy Wednesday! I’ve made some great progress on Pirates and Poise, my romance of manners erotica between a transmasc pirate and a nonbinary imperial consort. I’m trying to finish this in time for the Talk Like a Queer Pirate Day bundle in September.

Here, Captain Topaz Bandrake meets the disgraced Imperial Consort, Davi Madeira for the first time:

“Your Majesty?” Topaz dares to speak above a whisper as he steps inside. His boots kick up dust with each step and he grimaces. There are a few spots on the floor where Topaz sees larger footprints, wearing fashionable shoes, pacing up and down through the dust.

Picking up one of the lanterns, Topaz makes his way slowly through the Gardenia Wing with his stomach in his throat. “Your Majesty?” His voice echoes and hearing no response makes his mouth go dry.  

A creaking door from his right hand side brings Topaz’s shoulders together in the middle of his back, one hand swinging the lantern while the other reaches for the dagger in his boot.

He’s not sure what he’s expecting—an armed assailant, a hapless servant, a curious noble—but it is not Their Majesty, Imperial Consort Davi Jacinto Madeira, peeking behind the frame of their bedroom door.

Topaz’s mouth opens and closes mutely, his throat working to form sentences but only producing a whoosh of air.

Passing the glass windows showing the noble ships floating over the city, Topaz tries to get another glance at the dark Gardenia Wing. He pauses a little too long, and though Vernie lingers with him, they are ushered down the dock by a pair of wide-eyed servants wearing the gold and white attire of the Goldenwood Palace.

While other guests ooh and ahh over the gleaming mirrors, exotic flowers, and woven carpets, Topaz is disturbed by the winding hallways. Emperors of old have redesigned, renovated, and restructured the palace so many times that some hallways simply lead nowhere, and windows look out onto brick walls.

No wonder Emepror Ampelian found it more convenient to hide Davi after their divorce rather than dungeon them.

After the death of his father Lesurian and the defeat of his lichwyrm cult, Yvaissar the Astronomer decides it’s time for a vacation. The island of Saburia offers plenty of opportunities for rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation.

But when Yvaissar arrives, he discovers a new way to relax that isn’t on the brochure: many of the guests are quite attractive and have taken an interest in him. Nothing like a few spa days, beach bonfires, and hot kinky sex to feel like yourself again!

Yvaissar had never seen the ocean before. The closest he came was the banks of Lake Yuron, with algae gently bobbing in the water and the chilly waves lapping at his bare toes. Snowmelt had swollen the lakeshore until it swallowed the sand and touched the grass, drowning ants and worms trying to escape from the rush of water.

The coast of Massia glitters before him like a jewel. Diamonds leap from the opalescent waves, splashing giggly beachgoers with droplets of sunshine. Yvaissar slowly toes off his shoes so the golden sun can warm him from the bottoms of his bare feet to the top of his white-haired head.

Happy WIP Wednesday! I got stuck on Rosehorn edits so I haven’t written anything in a couple days. But the idea of a lovestruck paladin and a tavernkeeper wouldn’t leave my mind, so I barfed up some 400 words on them after LARP practice:

Levin’s heart feels sore at the sight. They were not so different from his own party, almost a decade ago. He’d been so young when he started out; they all were. Some of them grew up together, but most of them had come together over empty pockets and a sense of adventure. 

Fernsworth had been the place where they started, and now it was the place where everything ends. 

“No, but thank you for your generosity!” Levin calls back to them. “Enjoy the spoils of your victory!” They wave and cheer to him again as he continues down the road.

Their laughter echoing in Levin’s ears makes him want to turn around and reconsider; to celebrate with them and regale them with his own tales of daring escapades over his decade of adventuring. But then they would ask Levin about the rest of his party…

…and the twinge in his heart moves to his stomach.
