Falcon 4.0 is a singleplayer and multiplayer first-person and third-person simulation and vehicle combat game in the Falcon series.

The game's source code was leaked in 2000. One of the community projects which made use of it is the BMS mod, which is the community's preferred way to play the game. On May 4, 2023, the rebooted MicroProse announced upon claiming the franchise rights that they would officially support the BMS mod.[1]

Essential improvements

Patches

The official v1.08 patch provides bug fixes.

Falcon BMS

A massive technical and gameplay overhaul mod.[5]
Incompatible with the 2005 Allied Force re-release.
Drastically increases the minimum and recommended system requirements.[6]
Includes compatibility fixes for modern operating systems and graphics cards.
Fixes bugs and simulation accuracy oversights left in the game by the original developers.
Provides a total graphical fidelity overhaul (including DirectX 11.3 renderer with the PBR support, VR support, high quality physically based textures (up to 16K), volumetric clouds, new models with high polygon count, completely new effects and more).
Adds additional content, like new, highly accurate recreations of the real life jets that weren't originally a part of the game or new theaters of war.
Improves gameplay, physics and AI based on the real life data (mostly F-16 NASA data) and military procedures.

Issues unresolved

Graphical glitches

The game has graphical bugs during gameplay when it is run on Windows 7 or newer.
Some textures will show bright purple sections with and without the official patches.
Text becomes unreadable while using hardware rendering. Switching to the software rendering solves this issue, but the game slows to a crawl while the cockpit is in view.
Sometimes the menu screens will bug out and certain elements will stop disappearing when changing menu - running in Windows 95 compatibility mode could fix this (most prominent in the 2005 Allied Force re-release).[citation needed]

Issues fixed

No hardware acceleration

Use dgVoodoo 2 Glide wrapper[7]
  1. Download dgVoodoo 2.
  2. Extract dgVoodooCpl.exe and the contents of the 3Dfx\x86 subfolder to <path-to-game>.
    1. (Optional) Run dgVoodooCpl.exe and adjust settings.
  3. Rename <path-to-game>\falcon4.exe to anything else (compatibility shim).
  4. Run the game and switch renderer to Glide in the setup.
