SafeDisc is a copyright protection system developed by Macrovision, C-Dilla, and later Trymedia. The original protection aimed to prevent duplication of PC games distributed via optical discs, while a later version of the protection, SafeDisc Advanced, also supported digitally distributed games. The SafeDisc driver was included with all releases of Windows from XP to 8.1, before its removal with Windows 10.

SafeDisc was jointly developed by Macrovision and C-Dilla and first released for Windows on September 4, 1998. Macrovision acquired C-Dilla on June 18, 1999, and the company was renamed to Macrovision Europe in 2001.

On July 26, 2005, Macrovision acquired Trymedia and established a gaming division named Trymedia Games Division, with SafeDisc becoming one of its products. RealNetworks acquired Trymedia and all its products, including SafeDisc, on April 1, 2008. Trymedia would officially discontinue SafeDisc a year later on March 30, 2009, continuing to provide support for existing service agreements until their respective expirations.

SafeDisc functionality on Windows has deteriorated over the years due to discovered security vulnerabilities within the kernel-mode driver the protection relied upon. As this driver was included in all versions of Windows from XP to 8.1, these vulnerabilities prompted Microsoft to exclude the driver from Windows 10 and automatically block it if the OS detected its presence.

On September 8, 2015, Microsoft also released updates for Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1 that added the automatic block-on-sight behavior to those versions of Windows.

As such, only a few games using a newer version of SafeDisc function as intended on Windows 10 and later since those versions do not rely on the blocked kernel-mode driver.

As of 2025, the state of SafeDisc support for Windows is as follows:

• Older versions up to 4.59 are not supported on Windows 10 and 11, nor previous versions of Windows with the KB3086255 update installed.
  • Restoration is possible in both cases; however, it might expose the system to known security vulnerabilities, making it more susceptible to malicious attacks.
• Version 4.60 may function if the game does not rely on the kernel-mode driver.
• Newer versions (4.61-4.90) do not rely on the kernel driver and so remain functional on newer/updated versions of Windows.

Common file characteristics

SafeDisc protected games share some common file characteristics:

• All versions up to 4.61 are often found in game install discs with a file known as SecDrv.sys, which is also the name of the driver installed on Windows.
• Version 1 can be recognized by an .icd file with the same name and location as the main executable of the game. Version 1 can be also recognized by clokspl.exe, clcd16.dll, clcd32.dll and dplayerx.dll on the game install disc

Install SafeDisc drivers from a previous version of Windows

As the service may still not work due to lack of a digital signature, driver signature enforcement may need to be disabled. This however depends on the secure boot status of the system. Both require signing the driver with a custom digital signature. 1. There are two ways to re-install the driver: Download pre-made files and follow the instructions there. Do the signing manually. 2. Disable driver signature enforcement using one of the methods below: If Secure Boot is Disabled, Open Powershell as administrator and type: bcdedit /set "{current}" testsigning on then reboot the system. If Secure Boot is Enabled, refer to these instructions. This will lead to the Windows Recover Environment where driver signature enforcement can be disabled. It will re-enable after a regular reboot.
