This bank is so useless
This bank is so useless. Especially their debit cards. in BIG 2026 why is it always an issue to use the card online. cant even pay my freaking hydro bill (and yes they accept debit Visa and Mastercard) i have been banking with them since i was a kid and i'm now over it. DO NOT TRUST using your debit card for travel especially with this bank. gonna try out TD, my friend said she never had any bad experiences with them. transferring my stocks too .. so over with BMO at this point.
Beware using their mortgage.
Took out a mortgage with these guys and they are falsely reporting it as a revolving line of credit balance. They trashed my credit score. I have escalated this with BMO and they refuse to do anything. I'm now dealing with a class action lawyer and the government and the credit agencies to fix this.

I'd give 0 or negative stars if I could. I have a client who needs a payoff quote in order to refinance his mortgage. It is a complicated situation with a very old lien, so it has to "researched." We have been calling and emailing as instructed, but they keep putting us in circles on the phone and we get no email response. You can't speak to anyone who actually knows anything, and if you ask for a manager or supervisor, they just straight up say no. There is no customer service or customer care whatsoever.
Conduct
I wish to address the conduct of an assistant manager at the Queen Street Branch in Sault Ste. Marie.
Bethany has exhibited unprofessional behavior on numerous occasions. She finds it amusing. Frequently, she sits in plain sight and smirks at clients she dislikes. Bethany frequently mocks clients she finds unlikable. Alternatively, she also ridicules clients who are less fortunate.
I hold a degree in Human Resources. Bethany's actions constitute grounds for termination due to misconduct.
Bethany is representing the Bank of Montreal. I do not think this is how the CEO intends for the business to be operated.
Story:
A designated room is available for individuals utilizing the safety deposit boxes. While I was in the room, Bethany (assistant manager) asked the teller if I was still in the box. The teller replied with, "Yes. I am waiting to put her box back."
Bethany started to engage in actions that appeared to mock the clients (including myself). Her unprofessional conduct caused the teller to laugh and cover her mouth with her hand.
As the assistant manager responsible for the bank, Bethany displayed unprofessionalism. I find it hard to believe that the Bank of Montreal supports such behaviour.
Greedy scam artists
Threaten with collections over the smallest amount and just after Christmas. People have family and children they'd rather spend their money and not you greedy pigs with your ridiculous interest rates.
SHOCKING INCREASE IN SAFE BOX FEES
Without warning Safe Box fees and charges have gone up by 53% between 2025 and 2026! From cad169.9 to cad259.90! SHOCKING!!
BMO login page/system issue
Their login page/system went down very often. The system is wholly crap. And when call their customer service, they are just keep saying that I typed the wrong passwords or user id all those kind thing. It's not professional at all. I have just started using this bank recently. I can say that I do not like this experience. I would not recommend anyone using it. It just sucks.

I spent several hours and numerous calls this morning trying to register my online banking account. After I finally established it, I conducted my business and logged out. In the afternoon, I tried to log back in and was not able to. My first call to support took me 45 minutes. on hold before I was connected. After troubleshooting the matter, I was still unable to receive the security code to log in. Did not call back to India again for help because I didn't wish to wait another 45min.

Wrongful Freezing of Account
I was trying to work with them to get my Zelle to work. The rep said he had to get help from another department. Next thing I know, I was transferred to the fraud department. The rep there told me they were freezing my account because I deposited a hand written check and they believed it may be fraudulent. Mind you, they held onto ot for 5 days and then I had access to it. Now they froze my whole account and have to wait 14 to 30 days for them to decide if it was or wasn't fraudulent. Mind you, I spoke with the person that wrote me the check, who is a lawyer, and they already took the $400 out of their account. As soon as I get my access to my account back, I will be taking all my money that is in it that I can't get to right now, out and closing my account with BMO. the customer service sucks big time!

All has been well until 1/2/26
All has been well using Venmo through BMO, until 1/2/26: All of a sudden, while using BMO to Venmo/pay my contractors, it quit working. Error in Venmo said BMO declined the transaction! Called the 800 number on my BMO card and they said I had to come into a Branch and provide my credentials. I did so Monday 1/5/26 and the mgr he’d be working on it and said to come back Tuesday 1/6/26. I did. Reviewed everything. He called BMO Fraud department. They cannot fix it either! WTF! This has been working flawlessly for 3 years and now their Tier2 Support Team can’t figure it out? Turn on some data tracing!!! No response and terrible corporate support. The poor bank mgr was left with these pathetic responses to communicate to me. No ownership by corporate. Don’t trust them!
BUT, I found out they don’t support Venmo because they are pushing Zelle now! Let BMO know your leaving!!!
I had issues with my new card
I had issues with my new card, and accessing online banking. I went to a couple of BMO branches however, they were unable to assist me. I called the number on the back of my card, and the representative advised me to go to my home branch and speak to the BM, as he too was unable to assist me. I was extremely frustrated at this point. On 3 January I went to my home branch (9608 Macleod Trail SE, 2566 Transit), and met a teller by the name of Jaspreet Singh (Jaz), and advised him of the above, and that I need to speak with the BM. He asked me what the problem was. He took the time to hear me and within about 20 minutes, he finally solved the problem. Needless to say, I was shocked! With a smile he said, "you see, you did not need to see the BM". If only all employees who serve customers could be like Jaspreet. I am not sure if he realized just how helpful he was, and how appreciative I was. Jaspreet was nothing short of incredible. He was professional, knowledgeable, and had a wonderful calm demeanor. Imagine the feedback and reviews companies and organizations would receive if they had the opportunity to have someone like Jaspreet dealing with their customers. Jaspreet would do extremely well teaching employees about the true meaning of customer service, and being sincere in wanting to assist people. Jaspreet should get a raise, or better yet, a position within your institution where he can teach what customer service is all about. Thank you Jaspreet, you were truly amazing! A Walker
