Plan B is shelf stable for up to 4 years. Afterpill is shelf stable for about 18 months.
Plan B is currently available over the counter, and you can find coupons for it online for various retailers; some of those coupons require a prescription so check the coupon details carefully. Both of these medications can be ordered online.
Plan B and Afterpill in the 1.5mg tablets are less effective for people over 176 pounds, however it is safe to double the dose, so if you are heavier order two doses. Ella is also effective for heavier people, but requires a prescription.
Emergency contraception is effective for a short period after sex. You need to take Plan B or Afterpill within 72 hours of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
IUDs and birth control implants are effective long-term birth control that does not require your partner to participate in using the birth control or even be aware of it. IUDs are 99% effective and are effective for 3-12 years depending on type. Planned Parenthood can place an IUD for you, and so can many gynecologist’s offices, and IUDs are covered under most health insurance plans. Talk to your doctor or gynecologist about how to get an IUD. Birth control implants are 99% effective and are effective for up to 5 years. Like IUDs, you can talk to your doctor or gynecologist, or visit Planned Parenthood, to get an IUD.
The birth control methods listed here are not effective for preventing STIs, they are for pregnancy prevention only.
If you can become pregnant but do not want to be pregnant, now is a good time to consider a long-term birth control option like an IUD or a birth control implant, and to purchase emergency contraception like Plan B or Afterpill to have it onhand in an emergency.
Lots of people in this country don’t get a good education about birth control or their bodies. Here is Scarleteen’s comprehensive, accessible guide to birth control and how it works.
Scarleteen also has a guide to self-managed medical abortions.
If you are a college student, see what services are available at your student health center. Student health centers often offer prescriptions to contraceptives, Plan B, and some reproductive health care services at a reduced cost.

I know there’s a lot going on in the world right now, but please consider buying something off my mom’s COVID supply wishlist for the new school year 🥺🙏
My mom is an elementary (K-5) music teacher in Houston, TX. As you know, teachers in Texas are poorly paid. And this year, her school district is not providing any cleaning supplies to the teachers, so she and her teaching partner are having to fund all of this their selves. She alone has been going through one 8-10oz bottle of hand sanitizer a week. My mom and her partner are the only two music teachers for the entire school, so together they see approximately 500 students every day.
This year, of course, the Delta Variant is widespread. But basically, the state, the district, and her school are all just saying “f*ck it, we’re just going to pretend this is a totally normal school year, everything is fine 🌞🌺🥰🌼 what do you even need soap for?”
The teachers have literally everything you can think of working against them right now:
- Digital or online learning is not an option; all students are back to in-person learning.
- This also means there is minimal spacing, because they have full classes.
- None of the students are old enough to be vaccinated.
- The state of Texas also banned schools from requiring masks for students or teachers.
- Her district is also not requiring students or teachers to quarantine if they get test positive for COVID-19 or had a close contact with someone who did.
- Her school is also not notifying music, art, or PE teachers if they had an infected student in their class. They are only notifying the main classroom teachers.
Her wishlist is pretty modest right now. It just has cleaning supplies, spacing markers, and she also threw in some underwear for the school nurse (because the nurse has to buy that stuff herself too, and they always need more).

Dermatophagia/Dermatillomania Stim Tip
I went to the lake today and brought snacks with me, one of them being grapes and oh my god I think I’ve found a stim that replicates dermatophagia/dermatillomania in a way in which I haven’t seen before. I usually see tips like “rip up pieces of paper! Try chewing gum!” And im sure those are great for some people but they don’t give me the same feeling that peeling away skin does. AND the glue thing! Peeling dry glue off your hands is fun but if you’re feeling the urge to pick all the time, it isn’t really all that practical to be covered in wet/dry glue all the time. If you’re compelled to bite and peel at your skin/lips or whatever, get some grapes and peel them!
The skin of a grape is very similar to human skin in the way it peels and its a pretty satisfying tactile feel to peel away a big section of the skin in one go. I mostly use my teeth and bite the skin that was connected to the stem and peel up as much of it as I can before eating it. I also tried using my nails to peel it and see what that was like and it was also a similar feeling I get when picking, but I think this might work more as a dermatophagia stim (it still won’t hurt to try it out for dermatillomania though!)
Grapes aren’t really my favorite fruit, but having a way to peel something with my teeth that isn’t my skin is a win for them in my book. I know the skin is like the least appeeling (haha it’s a pun that works on two levels!) part of the fruit but I still ate it by itself cause I don’t really care. If you don’t want to eat grape skins, then you could also get a bowl to spit them out in/throw them away (don’t feel like you’re gross for doing this if you don’t want to eat the yucky part, I don’t think it’s gross if it’s something you’re doing alone or even around others if it’s for the betterment of your health) and then you’ll get to eat a tasty, juicy grape without all the annoying skin. I think thats a pretty good reward for not picking/peeling yourself
I havent tried this with other fruits or foods but leave your recommendations for other things that can be useful like this if you know of any! Something something twizzlers and pulling apart things or something, you know like that. Happy healing, and remember that your BFRBs don’t define you or your worth in the slightest way 💞
Those of you who take doxepin (sinequan) for depression (or allergies, or anything else, I guess)… just how??
I got a prescription for doxepin for my allergies a while back, but I avoid taking it for the most part except sometimes on the weekends. I took one 25mg capsule last night, and I think I was awake for maybe a combined total of 4-5 hours today. *Maybe*, and most of those 4-5 hours were very groggy and tired. And I’m about to crash again as I’m going to bed. My doctor said I could take 25mg UP TO 4X A DAY. Is this drug meant to treat allergies and depression by putting me in a coma??? Jfc
Why do we never get promotions or raises, you ask?
