Just saw your tags about the vegas roof scene, that was actually on my mind for a couple of days, want to know your thoughts on what was that kiss about, was Ilya earning that much already at that point? Was he scared that he probably pushed too much?
I just rewatched a couple days ago and I think my read on that episode 1 closing scene is:
ilya lashes out at shane because he’s feeling super shitty and miserable about having to go back home to his poisonous family dynamic (and it’ll probably be extra shitty because he lost rookie of the year to shane which his dad won’t let him forget).
I think if shane yelled back and told him to fuck off or just left it would’ve been a very different moment in their relationship… but shane hollander has one (1) move and it’s saying something painfully earnest that makes him emotionally vulnerable in front of ilya. and here that move is him saying “and I guess I thought maybe we… never mind,” and trailing off looking like a kicked puppy. the most painful little I just wanted you. but you don’t want me moment. he drops the playing cool/playing indifferent act and lets ilya see a glimpse of how much shane wanted them to spend the night taking shots together with the vets and hanging out at the stupid afterparty and maybe stealing some time to be together alone when the party ended. except ilya didn’t show, and then when shane went looking for him ilya yelled at him, and now shane’s just going to go. he’s just going to go. if ilya doesn’t want him around he won’t hang around.
this move has a 100% success rate when deployed against ilya rozanov. this man is ONE YEAR into his messy gay situationship and he is already physically incapable of letting shane hollander walk away feeling sad and rejected. idk how to describe it exactly but ilya seems to have this incredibly powerful knee-jerk reaction to moments where shane’s feeling like he’s in this thing alone. ilya cannot help himself he HAS to reassure shane even if he would rather die than say “I wanted that too” out loud.
anyway I think that’s why ilya chases shane down and kisses him. to be like I still want this, it’s not just you, you’re not in this alone. and also probably as an implicit apology for being an asshole, because I think ilya kind of hates the part of himself that responds to stress by lashing out and making someone else feel small (it’s too much like his dad and brother).
also whew can we talk about that kiss!!! it’s so urgent and frantic and hungry!!!! like ilya’s both trying to convey to shane how much he still wants him and also trying to give himself a memory he can take home with him. ilya is always putting all of his feelings into kissing because he is unable to put them into words.
except then shane’s the one who freaks out because what is WRONG with ilya, kissing him on an open rooftop where anyone could see? when shane pushes him away the tables turn again and this time it’s ilya who’s left feeling wrong-footed and off-kilter. it makes me kind of emo the way ilya calls after him, just this bid for connection that shane ignores: “see you next season. [no response] hollander. [no response].” wahh!!! now ilya’s the one who’s left feeling like he went out on a limb emotionally and shane just walked away!!!

ugh thank you for reminding me of this so I can lose my mind about it all over again. god I NEED fic set in that six month period where shane thinks ilya’s dropped him. the shame the embarrassment!! the sense of painful betrayal shane tries not to feel because it’s so humiliating that he feels betrayed!! because that means that he trusted ilya and that means he fell hook line and sinker for ilya’s whole act. I feel like after the first month or so of ilya leaving him on read shane tries really hard to put it out of his mind and not think about it anymore, which of course just means he’s thinking about it all the time. he’s lacing up his skates wondering if ilya told anyone, if it was some kind of bet or dare, if ilya laughed about taking his virginity after. he’s lying awake during his pregame nap unable to sleep thinking about how the sex rocked the foundations of his world and for ilya it was just another tuesday. he’s at dinner with the pikes passing the salad and flushing hot thinking about how he brought ilya into his home, took ilya inside his body, came without even being touched, and now ilya rozanov will always know that about him: how badly shane wanted it, how hungry he was for it. and the worst part is that now shane knows exactly how good it is!!! and he’s never going to have it again!!!
