about

Laura Cannell’s ‘LORE’ series is back with HAUNTLORE which will appear on Halloween 2025. Every month Cannell writes and releases new music, Hauntlore was written and recorded as the season changed in October. The wind was picking up, the grey clouded skies shrouding the river valley town where she lives bringing a shift in her emotional musical output.

The 3 tracks of HAUNTLORE will sink you into a deep trance of ghostly visions, friendly apparitions and a journey with a possessed being.

Contemporary Halloween feels like a mix of sugar coated and horrifying images, but in HAUNTLORE we look at the ethereal and intangible. Shapes which emerge through shimmering violin lines and echo in misty synth layers, swirling and never quite landing.
Are there voices within? Can you see what I can see?

TRACK LISTING

1. VISIONS

A gas lamp burns through the night as open strings give way to otherworldly spirits, bright edgeless shapes move in and out of focus leaving shimmering trails.

2. APPARITIONS
We often think of ghosts as belonging to a time long past, they are from someone else’s history, someone else’s life, but an apparition can be someone who has only just left us. A reminder of what we have, and who is in our thoughts.

3. POSSESSED
The violin embodies so many emotions, what happens if it runs away in a direction the player isn’t expecting? The bow shuddering back and forth on just a few notes, double stops trying to unearth a story. Always digging, searching for the sound, for the message.

“With A Year Of Lore, Laura Cannell has reinforced her reputation as a master storyteller in sound, capable of rendering instrumental narratives so true to the spirit of the folkloric themes and traditions that birthed them as to almost be conjurings. What a treasure it is to have these songs in the world! Whenever they play, the veil will seem thin. While they play, there will always be the feeling of magic on the air.” THE QUIETUS (A Year of Lore Series 1)

Following on from from her 12th solo album ‘The Visible Light of Other Worlds’ (2025), and her highly acclaimed 2024 album ‘The Rituals of Hildegard Reimagined’, the UK based Composer, Performer and Improviser was recently hailed as "The Radical Neo-medieval Musician Laura Cannell" by The Guardian in an interview about the influence of Hildegard of Bingen on experimental music (written by BBC Radio 3’s Jennifer Lucy Allan).

Over the past ten years Laura Cannell’s music has become synonymous with emotional sonic depictions of place, known and unknown, fragments of medieval music, whispers of folklore and of a kind of storytelling that is at once contemporary and ancient. Her music continues to evolve and evoke a strange new world between medieval-minimalism, neo-classical & ambient music.
A Year of Lore - Series 2 features new music each month which is inspired by folklore and personal experience as she re-imagines stories and ideas of ‘lore’ into her own musical language.
