Policy over customer empathy
I love Panera Bread. I recently broke my hip and ordered online so i could pickup at the window and not have to use crutches going in. Apparently, i didnt select the correct option to pickup at the window. They told me the food was ready, but they couldnt pass it thru the window because of theft. I offered my drivers license and the card i used to pay. The clerk said, no - i had to walk in, its the policy. There was no handicapped parking available, so i crutched on in. Since i had a drink and a bag of food, i was going to have to make two trips. Another opportunity for a good customer service person to offer help. NOPE. They were sorry for my troubles. Fortunately, two other DISGUSTED customers nearby, offered to help me out to the car. While i appreciate policy (having managed a huge Cust Facing team before), any smart manager holds compassion over policy.....nobody ever gets fired for that. Very disappointing.
