The Rift 02:49
Sharks are circling all around Moving man will not be found They’re on his tail in every way They try and try, but not today What’s the connection? Well I could never tell you Hold the throat open That’s what I wanna know People always disagree They think they’re right - they think they’re free All the flotsam and the jetsam Garbage rules - the joker sets them Collapsing matter I can’t get my head around it Collapsing star I told them all I know The answer that will always be It disappears in front of me The answer that will always be It reappears in front of me The time that we have taken up Could have all been used for love People often disagree - they lose their relativity Endless descension Floating to the surface Call for the doctor Television show Blood in the water Blood is in the water Collapsing star Are you as high as you can go? Yeah yeah, back and forth he goes Yeah yeah, straight up then down we go

Dogs 04:25
Could have had us all along On to make a million Who knows? All those summers spent inside What big brother told you And he knows Every hypnotized millennial That they don’t sympathize is criminal A photograph is all it took No one had to tell you Alright Now you feel the change of tide The hounds have got them running Dog night Your mother made it up to socialite Your brother always knew that that ain’t right Science shows no sign of life Walk away or dogs will bite Why don’t you meet me tonight? I am here alone Standing on the line of what’s right I am not the one The flashing light is oh so bright the vital signs they leave you Don’t fight And though you fed them all your life They’re coming home to eat you Tonight Your father made it to the house of white Your mother always knew she had to die Science shows no sign of life Walk away or dogs will bite Why don’t you meet me tonight I am here alone Standing on the line of what’s right I am not the one Walk down the dogs

The Bell 03:30
I got it swimming in my head I gotta’ prove that I’m not dead A separation in my mind It happens all the time Suppose we win this war Time, it’s moving faster than before I am in a plane straight to hell Just when I thought that it was going so well And I think I hear the bell From the bottom of the well I had to look - no I could not turn my back But all I saw was black On a sunny day Well - only well enough to say I am on a plane straight to hell Just when I thought that it was going so well Am I here alone I cannot tell Bye bye baby - I think I hear the bell Now I’m in the sky I see you in your room I see you with another You’re dancing on my tomb I am on a plane straight to hell Just when I thought that it was going so well Am I here alone I just can’t tell Bye bye baby - I know I hear the bell

We Get It 03:26
When the elves keep to themselves Everyone seems happy Let them gather on their shelves Until they’re feeling nappy You and I, we could spend some time Free of their harassment Until they wake in the late afternoon Wondering where the cash went We get it now We get it now but I can’t figure out how So just let me say Demented kids and giant babies Shouldn’t play with rockets Waiting for the loudest sound Designed to line their pockets Pick me up and we’ll go back in time And try to forget all about it We’ll have out fair share of chocolate and wine We couldn’t function without it We get it now It fell from the sky and we’re raking it down now We get it now Well they say that they reserve the right To sell out souls in the broad daylight Floppin’ around on a first class flight All of this could have been mine Failing on an endless sea Babies in their walkers Running out of time and tune We’re lucky they’re fast talkers I can’t tell if I could be bothered to try We got too tired to fight it The rocket’s ready for liftoff now Unhappy to ignite it We get it now They found out a way to describe it somehow We get it now Society’s sickness has cured us somehow We get it now Regret it now Forget it now Oh boy, don’t we get it now

Smoke 03:30
Woke up this morning Turned on the light The kids on the corner The a/c got me high No one here to help me I turn the tv on But all that I can think about Is how I done it wrong So wrong Can’t get around it So pick a fight or flight That smokey feelins’ Got you bathing in the night Smoke as a warning Smoke in the food Smoke in the walls and halls It’s gettin’ into you That’s true And the way that I remember It’s never been this strong I don’t know how they do it The whole damn town’s just One big bong Smoke on the water Into the void You might enjoy it But it makes me paranoid Oh no Is there something they can give me for it? Cuz every day I barely survive Surely I’d be willing to explore it Just wanna get outta bed alive Smoke I need a rescue I guess I’m just too old So suck me up and spit me out A place where I can go
6.
Winding 02:57
We warned you not to go You shut off your telephone Forgot your lucky ring It didn’t mean a thing You were invincible And un-convince-able You never heard a sound Just one more time around Winding around You thought you couldn’t break You put your life at stake You felt a dizzy spell And from the wall you fell You woke up on the ground And to that siren sound You don’t belong at all This nightmare hospital Noose getting tighter We hope he’s a fighter He’s winding around and around Smoking guitar solo You were invincible And un-convince-able You never heard a sound Just one more time around You thought you’d never break You put your life at stake Always will recall That nightmare hospital Face getting whiter The noose getting tighter It’s winding around and around

It’s gettin rough I had enough of that stuff Times are tough I’ll start a fire The one below It hit me so low Don’t you know We’re taking orders The working day Has gone away It took all day Just to walk there Im on a break I’ll take as long as I take The familiar quake Is taking over All right, ok She left a radiator scar on me It’s getting late I forgot the date Gather round They’re gonna count ya’ She don’t pay She’s lyin’all day All those times Your mother told ya’ Not on the chinny chin Of your imagination The petty little way That she slay all communication There’s no one left to save She left a radiator scar on me She’s the Queen of dry You can see it in her eye Plain and pure manipulation Out in the mud Shades of blood Super sub-human-al relations Right on the chinny chin of your imagination The who to the why She tryin’ all my patience The petty little way that she slay all communications There no one left to save I’ll never be your slave I’ll put you in your grave

Mundane B train Sleeping in a grave Catch his eye And it could ruin your day Dismal humming Is all that remains Mundane B train Sleeping in a grave Sunday prayers are getting nowhere And he’ll say what he’s not supposed to say Taking a life again today They say that they’re going To take him away There ain’t no weight To the things they say Fallen now in to disrepair Shout aloud but the devil don’t care Bad dreams Blood streams Yet another bad scene And he’ll say what he’s not supposed to say Taking a life again today Waiting for the ceiling now to fall See the young man raving at the wall Watch this guy get knocked around See him get tossed about And he’ll be riding all night Raving at the wall Going nowhere Once again Unsafe unsound And he’ll say what he’s not supposed to say Taking a life again today Waiting for the ceiling now to fall See the old man raving at the wall He hopes you’ll call

Everybody’s putting her down When she ain’t making the rounds She’s throwing down Got tired of hanging around She half naked She should have chilled on the brown Hey Jimmy Richard They don’t know what they’re talking about Got his eye on a shining ring Spark sparkle - ain’t gonna cost him a thing But for now he’s gonna go on home His friends said “you better take out a loan!” But hey Jimmy Richard They don’t know what they’re talking about And they don’t know You’ve already figured it out Wooooooo, wooooooo Look out Jimmy! Hey Jimmy Richard You’re locked up and you’re wasting away It’s a plan gone sour You’re so close and they take it away Take it away

Burn 03:04
Did you ever wonder, What became of someone Who started a fire To everything that tied them in? I wonder if they planned it Was it meant to be that way? I think I understand it It’s a sadness that should stay Burn it down In the pouring rain The sun goes down Let the ending fade The summertime has ended And only time will tell If you poison your garden You secure your time in hell After all the pain you bring And all you’ve taken away A thousand birds they will not sing The wingless ones must stay Burn it down Gotta hit the road Make no sound Let your darkness grow Time and again you come out Smelling like a rose Why should it matter What we say? How many times? But you’re staying here cuz You forgot to pay Forgot to pay You got to pay Before you fade away Burn it down Like it never was Make no sound Don’t you wait for us My oh my In the pouring rain So burn it down Let the ending fade
11.
Nearly every night In this stupid building Seeming worse than a fight I think that she might have killed him The kids in the hall It’s like an amplifier I’m trippin’ over their toys I’d like to set them on fire I’ve got bad neighbors every morning I’ve got bad neighbors every night Hey Mr. Superintendent Stay away from my wife And fix the bathroom ceiling For the eightieth time Got us a good hotel Just to get away It’s like a prison break Oh how I wish we could stay I got bad neighbors in the morning I got bad neighbors every night I got bad neighbors for the weekend I’ve had bad neighbors all of my life And it’s hard when you know You go on with an angry soul And the years that you stay You’re accustomed to that way
12.
Not much I really wanna tell you Not much is really on my mind And I’ve got no empathy here for you And I’ve got no body on my side How long have you kept me here for? I think you better take your time The remains of May You may not even ever find Oh yeah, by the way Our love was anything but boring Winter was one hell of a ride Down in the basement I stood there in amazement It took eternity to hide The remains of May Shine on your ultraviolet light Throw my rights away You think you’re breaking me but I Got nothin to say Looks like you’re running out of time And I’ll be on my way News reporter: “Whilst out walking his dog this morning, a Yorkshire man found the bludgeoned body of a young woman that has been missing for nearly 3 weeks. His dog digging in a pile of what he thought were just leaves on a beautiful autumn day made the deadly discovery. The latest reports say the woman’s remains were seemingly buried and then dug up and devoured by wild foxes. More to come later on the news at 10 live from Newmiller Dam” The remains of May They were found today They got my DNA How did I let it get away? I made a grave mistake Only a day away ’till they Throw the key away I’ve got no body on my side The remains of May It took eternity to hide The remains of May

about

Eric Barlow publicly resigned from his music career in 2019.

Fortunately, this much-lamented announcement immediately preceded the writing and recording of his best-ever bangers. What changed? Maybe it was the pandemic lockdown. Maybe it was the outcry from us, his friends and fans. I can tell you my exact response at the time was: “I am completely ignoring this very childish and frankly selfish attempt to grow up.”

But mostly I believe that true inspiration—capricious and temporarily AWOL—found him again.

I think I’ve heard just about every bit of music that Barlow has produced. I was lucky enough to be in a band with the man. We were pretty good. I loved playing his songs. His energy and charisma kept us going, even after half the band moved from Boston to Brooklyn.

So trust me when I tell you that this album, Still Moving Parts, is far and away the best music of his career. I'm thrilled to have played a part in its creation.

There are songs here that reflect Barlow’s most prominent influences, of course. The Kinks-y bounce/social commentary combo of “We Get It.” The Stones groove and horn lines of “Smoke.” But the majority of this collection is uniquely Barlow—the undertones of his eclectic sonic tastes paired with funny, insightful, even angry lyrics. And this is not a man who radiates anger. Sometimes, though, there’s just no substitute for it.

When we used to write together, lyrics were often a burdensome afterthought. If they fit the meter of the song, then that was just fine. Good enough for rock and roll. But now I find each of these new songs bursting with enticing imagery. They may cross back and forth into the esoteric, but the mood of each track is unambiguous. You get what he means.

Halos of harmonies, meticulous melodicism, and tasteful textures…plus, of course, Barlow’s impassioned and inimitable guitar playing. And hey did you know he can play keys? I sure didn’t, and I played music with him for like ten years.

Still Moving Parts arrives during a baffling time in popular music, never mind rock and roll. I won’t try to make sense of it here. Suffice it to say that if you’re in it for the money, you’d be better off playing Lotto. So bless the Eric Barlows of the world who can’t or won’t give up the joy in creating music and sharing it with us. And you, too, for devoting the time and attention, and dare I say a few dollars, to make it worthwhile.

There is much more I’d like to say about these songs, calling out my favorite moments and detailing some of the sonic elements. But I will save it for the ten year anniversary reissue.
