about
“Burn” is the third single from Brooklyn based Eric Barlow on The Sound Cove digital singles label. A 3 minute minor key master class that showcases his inestimable talent as a songwriter, the song references loss, abuse of power, consequences, and change of identity. Musically, “Burn” evokes shades of Sloan, Sly Stone, and Joni Mitchell, featuring drippy surf guitar, fuzzy hooks, and organ and string lines that mimic the anxiety and defiance of the words. With intense vocal harmonies by Barlow’s frequent sonic collaborator, Scott Janovitz, the song pushes into the afterworld. As Eric states, “Scott really took that song over when he was mixing and added the harmonies. Before The Sound Cove even approached me about releasing it, Scott thought it should be a single!”. We at The Sound Cove absolutely agree!
lyrics
Did you ever wonder,
What became of someone
Who started a fire
To everything that tied them in?
I wonder if they planned it
Was it meant to be that way?
I think I understand it
It’s a sadness that should stay
Burn it down
In the pouring rain
The sun goes down
Let the ending fade
The summertime has ended
And only time will tell
If you poison your garden
You secure your time in hell
After all the pain you bring
And all you’ve taken away
A thousand birds they will not sing
The wingless ones must stay
Burn it down
Gotta hit the road
Make no sound
Let your darkness grow
Time and again you come out
Smelling like a rose
Why should it matter
What we say?
How many times?
But you’re staying here cuz
You forgot to pay
Forgot to pay
You got to pay
Before you fade away
Burn it down
Like it never was
Make no sound
Don’t you wait for us
My oh my
In the pouring rain
So burn it down
Let the ending fade
