hey pause your discourse for a moment to listen to Dr. Erica Chenoweth talk about which social movements succeed

Basically, successful movements:

  1. build an ever-broadening base
  2. draw people out from the opposition – not necessarily completely switching sides, but moving in that direction
  3. maintain resilience as attacks on the movement increase
  4. have the ability to shift strategy when necessary

What is the 3.5% rule? (short)

Some other good takeaways from the video:

  • reaching 3.5% does not guarantee the success of a movement on its own, but it is still powerful
  • the 3.5% has to be sustained. so expect to be doing your part regularly, not just once or twice or a few times
  • movements are significantly more appealing to people when they are nonviolent. this helps recruiting and eliciting defection (#1 and #2)
  • it’s suggested that nonviolent movements promote democracy (and violent ones promote tyranny)
  • violent movements don’t reach 3.5% because people don’t want to join them

congrats, you just completed a week’s worth of a social movements course! *confetti*
