for my fellow white u.s. americans especially, I thought this was a good overview
war is over 🏳️🌈🏁
hey pause your discourse for a moment to listen to Dr. Erica Chenoweth talk about which social movements succeed
Basically, successful movements:
- build an ever-broadening base
- draw people out from the opposition – not necessarily completely switching sides, but moving in that direction
- maintain resilience as attacks on the movement increase
- have the ability to shift strategy when necessary
What is the 3.5% rule? (short)
Some other good takeaways from the video:
- reaching 3.5% does not guarantee the success of a movement on its own, but it is still powerful
- the 3.5% has to be sustained. so expect to be doing your part regularly, not just once or twice or a few times
- movements are significantly more appealing to people when they are nonviolent. this helps recruiting and eliciting defection (#1 and #2)
- it’s suggested that nonviolent movements promote democracy (and violent ones promote tyranny)
- violent movements don’t reach 3.5% because people don’t want to join them
congrats, you just completed a week’s worth of a social movements course! *confetti*
