People who perform manual labor should be not only given high and liveable wages, but unlimited access to healthcare and physical therapy to help manage the myriad conditions that come from doing back-breaking work.
Like this is not an absurd concept. It bothers me that people think that it is.
Anyone who thinks they shouldn’t has clearly never had to perform manual labor for a long stretch of time. It is exhausting, you run a chance of injury, and it always requires as many of its own skills as whitecollar work. It is skilled labor, with an emphasis on labor. It is necessary labor, with a second emphasis on labor. And it deserves to be respected and properly compensated.

i’ll defend fanfic for my whole life. like the joy it brings is genuinely transformative and indulgent in a way unique to the genre. it isn’t meant for a market, it isn’t meant to be sold or marketed. it is born out of such care and passion for a media that one must write and must share it, so other folks can enjoy it to. for no other reason than love and joy. do you know how special that is? especially in our current social and political climate.
Fanfic is a pure expression of what might just save this species: Passion, Self-Expression, and Communion. It is pure humanity in a time of corruptive, capitalist alienation.

hi hi! do you happen to have any links to those studies you were talking about linking hygiene and mental health?
Not off the top of my head, I’m afraid. They were ones I read a few years ago, and I don’t remember the titles or authors so much as their overall conclusions. Which were basically:
1. Feeling dirty (I think they made a distinction between *being* dirty, like for work or recreation and usually with the anticipation of cleaning up afterwards, and *feeling* dirty?) almost always negatively impacts mood in the short-term. Nobody likes it, everybody gets grumpy about it.
2. Feeling dirty for extended periods of time almost always negatively impacts self-esteem. Nobody can manage it without starting to feel more depressed than usual, everybody gets more pessimistic, misanthropic, and self-critical than usual.
I reckon I must’ve synthesized that info in my own head with articles I’d read about how poorly maintained habitats and a lack of proper hygiene in bad zoos (not all zoos, just the bad ones) always led to animals being unhappy (especially primates). Basically, I went, “Yeah, that makes sense. Homo sapiens are a kind of primate, and all the other primates are big on grooming, ergo …”
Anyway, I imagine it shouldn’t be too difficult to internet search some specific studies if you need actual articles to reference. Since I’ve read a lot of academic articles in my time (like … gods, sooo many articles) on a lot of different subjects, my brain stopped worrying about anything other than the key ideas I found really interesting a while ago. Sorry. My brain is a poorly organized, haphazard encyclopaedia.

So much of the discontentment people feel in their day-to-day existence makes sense when one remembers that homo sapiens are apes. We are animals who need enrichment and rest and social interactions as part of troops. We aren’t meant to work and work and work without producing something tangible, we aren’t meant to feel isolated and run-down with stress for long periods of time, we aren’t meant to be in concrete and metal and glass boxes with no plants around us for days and weeks and months on end.
We really need to start treating ourselves like clever monkeys more.

Feeling dirty and grimy for extended periods of time is extremely draining on the mental well-being of humans. Psychological studies prove it is detrimental to our self-esteem and contentment. And no wonder; we are animals–homo sapiens, a kind of ape–that instinctively places high importance on personal grooming. Like monkeys and cats and birds in a zoo, one of the best ways to make us feel sad … is to make us feel gross to ourselves.
So here’s an easy saying from my therapist/zookeeper:
“If you feel like you hate the world, eat something.
If you feel like the world hates you, get some sleep.
If you feel like you hate yourself, take a shower.
You will probably feel much better.”

I think it’s right to emphasize that Palestinian men don’t deserve this and it’s also right to rally around Palestinian children, children being the most vulnerable members of any society and also being half of Gaza’s population
Like particularly in the case of Palestine. The idea that we, Palestinian adults, are uniquely hateful towards Palestinian children, and that Palestinian children come out of the womb clamoring for blood, is pretty integral to how Palestinians are dehumanized. Israeli politicians from Golda Meir to Ayelet Shaked have said as much, and Palestinian children are the only group of children in the world to be tried in military courts.
I think maybe the fact that a group of Palestinian kids sheltering in a hospital held a makeshift press conference in English and the gist of it was “can you please stop letting us get killed? We want to go to school” was forgotten a bit too fast

Happy Trans Day of Visibilty!
I’m reasonably confident that I myself am cis (famous last words in any post like this, I know), but my relationship with my own identity (gender and in general) has benefitted so much from their perspectives. One of those, “I’m not one, but I support their agenda!” kinda stances for me personally.
Because the trans agenda benefits us all. Everyone. Queer or straight. Bodily autonomy? Self-determination? Room and safety to experiment with who one is and what one actually likes? This is good for everyone, and they’re the ones pushing hardest to expand it.
They deserve respect, freedom, and happiness as much as any of us. These are human rights, and thus trans rights. Because all trans rights are human rights.

I’m starting to sound like a nutcase at work because upper management keeps trying to implement AI programs and AI assistants and Chat GPT and my middle-of-the-road, don’t-infodump, don’t-engage response has been “I don’t like AI”, “I prefer to remain in control of my own tasks”, “I’d rather make my own mistakes”, and “I don’t trust any machine smarter than a toaster”
My honest opinion: “Generative Artificial Intelligence” is a purposefully misleading liar’s name we gave to a labour-stealing company’s proprietary algorithm so they could market it to businesses who would rather see simple work done badly at the expense of the consumer than contribute to the community it is profiting off by offering even a single human being in that population the barest minimum honest wage to learn and do it properly, simultaneously robbing the working class while grifting both the client and the customer, and we’re buying into it because we’re a superstitious social species of codependent apes would could pack bond with a rock if we spent enough time around it existing in the most extreme state of social disconnection and parasocial reliance humanity has ever known, like a dying man in the ocean drinking saltwater

Not to be That Atheist™, but a look at religious history shows we don’t even need “the most extreme state of social disconnection and parasocial reliance” to pack bond with a rock; we’ll do it even when things are going great. Heck, if someone carves a face on the rock (doesn’t even need to be a human face) and claims it can bring us good fortune and/or allow us to go to a nice place after we die, we’ll make the rock the *eternal* leader of our bonded pack and start performing blood sacrifices in its name.

Light and hope and festival and community in the desolate rubble that has been made of their homes, the striken poverty of their living conditions. Celebration amidst the starkest evidence of the crime–the ravaging, murderous, genocidal war crime–that has been commited against them.
It’s sublime. It’s a travesty that the conditions of these photos should ever even exist. It’s holy. It’s a horror and a condemnation against Israel and the US that such inhumane anathema has been committed. It’s beautiful. It a source of wrath.
