[standing up boldly] I don’t think pearl actually fumbled rose though

everyone makes the joke posts about how if they fumbled a bbw to a soundcloud rapper they would also start eating their own organs but i don’t think pearl actually fumbled rose under any definition. pearl inspired some of the most positive changes in rose’s life and rose spent thousands of years loving being with her while also fully convinced that she was undeserving of her. you have to place the whole thing with rose dating greg in context of the gem timescale. it’s canon text that rose was occasionally dating earth men during the course of their time on earth, not as some sort of monogamous break-up situation where she would leave pearl each time, but where her gem relationship with pearl was one long ongoing thing, and humans were the cute little aliens she sort of objectified and treated as a novelty to occasionally date before she got bored of them/they died/whatever. rose presumably did not in any meaningful way drop pearl for greg, she just deprioritized spending time with her–which pearl was fine with at first, because she was fine with being deprioritized for novelties that might only last a few years while she’ll last for thousands. pearl became upset and envious after she realized that rose actually cared about this one in a way more comparable to how she cares about pearl. but this didn’t happen because she fumbled rose by any reasonable stretch of the term. this happened because even after reinventing herself once thanks to pearl’s idea, rose still believed that she hadn’t really changed, and hated herself, and saw herself as unworthy and undeserving of the people around her, and was very suicidal. she was so enamored with greg and with humans because she saw them of being capable of changing & growing in a way that she believed she was fundamentally incapable of. and so she decided to kill herself through the route that involved what she perceived as reinvention into someone beautifully capable of that growth. pearl just simply could not have done anything about rose still privately having those hang-ups or about the fact that they’re both gems. I Do Not Believe It Was Pearl’s Fumble When Her Wife Killed Herself

    Finally

    FINALLLY

A POST WITH MANY LIKES THAT ACTUALLY GETS IT

I think one of the biggest misconceptions about fatigue is that it’s just a more extreme version of tiredness. Fatigue and tiredness are not the same thing. The biggest difference between them is that tiredness goes away if you rest, but fatigue doesn’t. When you suffer from fatigue, your body keeps draining you even while you’re lying down or sleeping. It’s like a leak’s been opened up somewhere and your energy keeps draining away no matter what you do. All you can do is wait and hope that at some point the flow will stop.

Like the difference between sadness and Chronic Depression, one is a temporary response while the other is a medical condition. Caused by something being disordered in a person’s actual, physical body.

psychosis needs to lose its negative connotation, its a thing that happens. you are far closer to psychotic episodes than you think and we need to all know how to deal with them properly

I always say that psychosis is a natural part of human experience or state of mind. And guess what, non psychotics get MAD when I say that. “No, its not natural or normal at all! Dont normalize it!” Guess what happens when you haven’t slept in a few days? Psychosis. Guess what can happen when you’re too stressed? Psychosis. Guess what can happen from physical conditions? Psychosis. Psychosis is the same type of normal that any other negative state of mind is. Someone experiencing depression due to circumstances? Normal. Someone dissociating during a stressful event? Normal. Psychosis isn’t different. ANYONE can experience psychosis and it doesn’t even have to be a disorder. Psychotic disorders are disorders due to the frequency and intensity of psychosis.

People need to stop demonizing normal human experiences

Poor boy had such a rough time, better spoil him a little

And that’s the beauty of kink/fetish, especially with a trustworthy partner. Besides just being fun and pleasurable (a perfectly adequate reason in its own right), it can be used to fulfill psychological needs and bring a lot of emotional comfort. Like good food or making art or exercise or therapy, it can do a person so much good.

A Threads post by user mycatisabean that reads "listen to me, this is serious. in a world that is horrible and dark and terrifying the most important thing you can be doing is lighting lamps and filling cups. your most important ally is your sense of hope and community and love. these are your last lines of defense against an enemy who’s main weapon against you is apathy and hopelessness"ALT
A Threads post by user happydonkeypottery that reads "How…do you ask for a refill? I want to be light and life and love but I’m jaded and exhausted and scared and confused and I can’t. I just find darkness every time I open my mouth. I literally almost responded to this with a dark pessimistic retort but I don’t want to be like that anymore."ALT
A pair of Threads posts from user mycatisabean that read "I absolutely understand this feeling, and I appreciate you sharing. In all honesty, it’s all just baby steps. You stopped yourself here from responding with pessimism, and that’s a big deal! Refilling your cup is going to be a lot of tiny things. Noticing the tea in your hand, or the flowers in your neighbor’s garden. Choosing not to say the pessimistic thing. Hope is a path you’re building and each stone is important. I find myself, nowadays, saying things like “this butterfly is whythe6 world is worth saving.” its worth being cheesy about it, even if you don’t believe it at first. this cat, this meal, this moment. it’s worth saving. and if it’s not worth saving yet, we’re going to build one worth saving together. I’m sorry that despair has felt so heavy lately, but I appreciate you being here."ALT

Look. The way you ask for a refill?

Sometimes, what you need to do is literally ask for a refill. I know that can be scary and upsetting and requires you to be willing to be vulnerable, but please consider two things:

One: if what you want to do is be able to fill other people’s cups, you can’t fill from an empty cup. You literally can’t do the work if you’re emptied out. You need to do this so you can help.

Two: for the people that love you, the people that really matter, you aren’t imposing on them by asking for a refill. This is one of the things I really internalized from coming home to Judaism: when someone asks me to help them, they’re giving me the opportunity to perform a mitzvah. No matter your belief system or outlook, I think we can probably all agree that being given an opportunity to be more awesome is pretty great.

So ask. Here are a few scripts you can try.

    “Hey, I am…

    • … having a bad day.
    • … really struggling.
    • … really hurting because of the state of the world.
    • … having a hard time focusing on positive things.
    • … feeling emptied out.

Could you please help me? I could really use…

    • … some company.
    • … to hear about something beautiful you saw today.
    • … to hear some good news.
    • … to see a picture of your pet.
    • … to be told something you like about me.
    • … to be reminded of something I do that you like.
    • … your silliest new meme.
    • … to go for a walk with you.
    • … to hear about your favorite show.
    • … a hug.”

I have genuinely never asked my friends to love me a little bit louder and gotten anything but an outpouring of support.

People love you and want to take care of you. All you have to do is give them an opportunity and maybe tell them the best way to love you right now.

Rest = Lying Down, Eyes Closed
Because other parts of the program from England made sense, I decided to try resting every afternoon. After some experimentation, I determined that the most restorative rest resulted from lying down in a quiet place with my eyes closed.
I was surprised at the results from taking a 15-minute rest in mid-afternoon. Even that short break seemed to help, reducing my symptoms, increasing my stamina and making my life more stable. After a while I added a similar rest in late morning.
Over time, I came to believe that my scheduled rest was the most important strategy I used in my recovery. Resting everyday according to a fixed schedule, not just when I felt sick or tired, was part of a shift from living in response to symptoms to living a planned life. The experience showed me that rest could be used for more than recovering from doing too much; it could be employed as a preventive measure as well. In the terms suggested by someone in our self-help program, I learned the difference between recuperative rest and pre-emptive rest.
Surprisingly, taking pre-emptive rests greatly reduced the time I spent in recuperative rest, because I was experiencing much less Post-Exertional Malaise. The result was that my total rest time was reduced.

sometimes like an idiot i assume everyone has read bruce campbell on resting/pacing to handle post-exertional malaise affiliated with chronic fatigue. that is obviously not true! anyway here’s the hot guide, i linked straight to the “schedule in mandatory complete 15 min rest as part of your day and hopefully you will get to do less surprise many hours of rest to recover” section but the whole thing is laid out pretty clearly

Having ADHD is so fun because sometimes youre looking for something that you use regularly and definitely put away in a smart and reasonable place and you have absolutely 0 hope of remembering where and finding it. And then other times ur like “hmm I need a some kind of small pointed object. I feel like i remember seeing a paperclip under the left couch cushion a month ago, i wonder if its still there” and it is

“wait but if u saw the paperclip why would u just leave it there?” its the adhd. Also if i had put it away then i wouldnt have been able to find it a month later when i needed it. So. Checkmate neurotypicals.

Problem is when the ADHD catalogue is out of date, when you go to check under the couch cushion for that paperclip and it ISNT there, sometimes your brain will just give you a montage of false memories of everywhere you’ve ever seen a paper clip, like this

    image

“Wait. But if you saw the paperclip, why would you just leave it there?”

“Because it lives there. That’s just how it is. Like that pile of clothes I’ve been meaning to donate for months just lives there in that corner.”

    nightmare-from-heaven:

Hey. Your brain needs to de-frag. Literally it needs you to sit there and space out.

If you want your memory or executive function to improve, stare out a window at the skyline or sidewalk or trees or birds on the electrical wires for like 20+ minutes per day. (With no other stimulation like a podcast or TV if you can manage but hey baby steps innit). If you’re fortunate enough to have safe outside with any bits of nature, go stare closely at a 1 meter square of grass and trip out on the bugs and shapes of grasses and stuff.

Literally this will make you smarter. Our brains HAVE TO HAVE this zone out time to do important stuff behind the scenes. This does not happen during sleep, it’s something else.

That weird pressurized feeling you get sometimes might be your brain on no defrag.

Give your brain a Daily Dose Of De-Frag.

    This explains so much.

Also, if you don’t take the time regularly, your brain will do it for you. Usually when you’re already stressed and it gets to be too much. You will zone out. And you can not control it. So regular maintenance will help

As they say, “If you don’t make time for system maintenance, then system maintenance will take time from you.”

i need to soapbox about DID more, because its kinda like being trans, you’d think that you’d notice if you had it but that’s just cultural osmosis giving a skewed impression, statistically you probably wouldn’t. statistically you need to do rigorous work to notice.

you might have entertained the idea once and discarded it because u have put DID in this box of rare implausible fantastical mental disorders when it is simply far more mundane than that.

it’s still unbelievable to me how well my system was hiding, if i hadn’t tapped that first domino of “trying IFS in therapy” all my alters would still probably be covert. but trying to talk to parts was enough to bring them out of hiding so they could enlighten me on how they’ve been driving my behavior for decades

something i think about a lot is how the sensationalized perception of DID as being this extremely rare disorder that only occurs in response to the worst possible kinds of abuse imaginable makes it so much harder for people to realize that they have DID. i mean, for one, even for people who have been through those kinds of abuse, complex dissociative disorders are defined by the obscuring of trauma, meaning it’s extremely common for dissociative systems to just not even realize they were abused or traumatized at all. but also, that level of abuse is not required for a dissociative system to form at all. it’s not like a dark souls status effect where once your trauma bar fills up enough you get DID; the disorder is a complex response meant to allow the mind to cope with severe chronic stress at a very young age, and there are lots of things that can contribute to that— any kind of abuse, neglect, bullying, isolation, disability, neurodivergence, queerness, etc. these factors tend to compound. autistic people, for example, are both far more susceptible to stress and far more likely to be traumatized, and so we also have a higher incidence of dissociative disorders. it took me so long to realize and internalize that my experience of being emotionally abused by my mother while also growing up queer and autistic was “bad enough” for my brain to respond by developing DID to protect me. i’d completely written it off as a possibility before then, because, like the original post said, it’s far more mundane than people are led to believe. that’s why i think spreading awareness is so important.

    Interesting parallel.

  • hi hi! do you happen to have any links to those studies you were talking about linking hygiene and mental health?

    wherethesakeat

Not off the top of my head, I’m afraid. They were ones I read a few years ago, and I don’t remember the titles or authors so much as their overall conclusions. Which were basically:

    1. Feeling dirty (I think they made a distinction between *being* dirty, like for work or recreation and usually with the anticipation of cleaning up afterwards, and *feeling* dirty?) almost always negatively impacts mood in the short-term. Nobody likes it, everybody gets grumpy about it.

    2. Feeling dirty for extended periods of time almost always negatively impacts self-esteem. Nobody can manage it without starting to feel more depressed than usual, everybody gets more pessimistic, misanthropic, and self-critical than usual.

I reckon I must’ve synthesized that info in my own head with articles I’d read about how poorly maintained habitats and a lack of proper hygiene in bad zoos (not all zoos, just the bad ones) always led to animals being unhappy (especially primates). Basically, I went, “Yeah, that makes sense. Homo sapiens are a kind of primate, and all the other primates are big on grooming, ergo …”

Anyway, I imagine it shouldn’t be too difficult to internet search some specific studies if you need actual articles to reference. Since I’ve read a lot of academic articles in my time (like … gods, sooo many articles) on a lot of different subjects, my brain stopped worrying about anything other than the key ideas I found really interesting a while ago. Sorry. My brain is a poorly organized, haphazard encyclopaedia.

Hey just a general PSA from someone officially diagnosed and documented:

Now is not the time to seek out an autism diagnosis.

RFK’s plans have been made very clear and any diagnosis you do get will get you put on this “national disease registry” they’re proposing.

Trust me when I say I completely understand the need for accommodations and a better understanding of yourself, but if you have gone this long without being diagnosed, you will be better off waiting.

Furthermore, listen to and advocate for folks who are diagnosed, especially folks with higher support needs. They’ll be the first ones targeted for whatever bullshit “experimental treatments” the government tries to push.

Stay safe and look out for your neighbor.

The only point to aquiring an official diagnosis is to help you access official services and resources. That’s it. But if the officials are cutting those services and resources (because they’re ignorant and malicious bigots), and in fact are actively trying to make life worse for those with a diagnosis …

Well, be strategic during these insane times. Be cunning and survive.

You don’t need a diagnosis to better understand yourself. To learn what strategies will make your life easier. To seek accomodation from good people.
