The World Chess Championship 1921 is the crowning match to determine the new World Chess Champion featuring the defending World Champion going up against the challenger.

Format

  • First to 8 wins, draws excluded or most points after 24 games
    • 60 minutes time control for 15 moves

Prize Pool

$25,000 USD are spread among the participants as seen below:

Initial prize distribution: $11,000 USD for Lasker and $9,000 USD for Capablanca.
Additional $5,000 USD were donated after 5 games: $3,000 USD for the winner and $2,000 USD for the loser

1 Emanuel Lasker resigned in June 1920 and declared Jose Raul Capablanca the new world champion. Capablanca didn't want to become champion without playing match, so he convinced Lasker to play. Lasker agreed but insisted on being named as the challenger[1]
