apeX eSports was a German multigaming organization that was established in August 2010. It was particularly well known within the Console eSports scene, but had also hosted teams for a number of PC titles, such as Call of Duty 4. apeX originally supported a European StarCraft II team, which dissolved in early 2012, but returned in later in October with a strong lineup consisting mostly of former members of the Korean team Old Generations.

Controversy

[edit]

apeX eSports' return in October 2012 with five very high profile players, the former oGs players InCa, TOP, VINES, and jookTo, as well as the former mousesports player MorroW was met with mixed feelings from the community, partly because of the return to the spotlight of various community favourites, but on the other hand, due to the negative reputation held by the organization in question.

Akki, a German player who had been on the team towards the end of 2011, stated[9] that:

"This is the worst team I have ever been into. The management is completely retarded and stupid. I joined them around October 2011 and played 3 or 4 month for Apex Esport. They promised to pay 500€ for the whole team (including Slider, funkay, Olajuwon and me) each month. Myself getting 150€. Actually I have never seen any money."

"I've played the biggest events in Germany (IFNG + EPS finals) during this time and the teammanager wasnt able to send me a shirt or something else to represent the team."

"I dont see any homepage or sponsors. So i doubt this will ever work. Anyway gl."

— Arthur "Akki" Roskos

Members from the scenes of other eSport titles backed the view that apeX was not a trustworthy team. A Finnish Counter Strike Source team reported that salaries had not been paid,[10] whilst in the case of a German Halo team, it was reported that the players were forced to pay for flights and hotels for themselves, when such had been promised, and they only received reimbursement from the organization as regards the money for the flights six months later, while the money for the hotel was never received. The same team allegedly did not receive their salaries. The same report however said that an American Halo team received all that was promised by apeX, albeit late.[11]

On the 19th of October 2012, a day before the new team's debut at the 2012 DreamHack Open: Bucharest, it was announced that all apeX players had pulled out of the tournament.[12]

On the 25th of October 2012, apeX's player manager announced that InCa, VINES, and TOP had left the team, leaving only jookTo and MorroW.[13] In an interview published later that day on ESFI,[14] the player manager stated that the incident had left the players "angry and disappointed":

"I spoke with Michael Stucher (apeX General Manager) and asked if they were able to support these players and he said yes so we picked them up and so far everything was good until it came closer to the event (Dreamhack Bucharest). I told him to book the flights and hotels 2-3 weeks before the event and he said yes. He told me he would do it the next day then I asked the next day and he had procrastinated...Finally two days before the event he started replying to me again and said he wasn't able to book the flights and hotels."

"I have only done what I have been told to do in apeX eSports, I got orders from a boss. I don't manage the budget, I am only an intermediary between the players and the General Manager of apeX eSports. This organization is amazing...but from what I have seen it is difficult to plan for their players and staff. Planning just a few hours before they are going to play just isn't going to work. The players need to feel comfortable to win. The organization needs to work with all the members, if everyone in the organization can work together we can all win."

— Joachim hofven Rittfeldt Hofvenshiold

On the 26th of October 2012, MorroW stated on his stream that all his team mates, as well as the player manager, had left the team, and that he was just hoping that he would get his salary at the end of the month.[15] Later in the day, JookTo also confirmed his departure on twitter due to broken promises.[16]
