Mobius turned and made his way over to it, grin growing as the bird didn’t flinch a bit at his approach.
“Hi,” He said softly, not resisting the urge to stroke a finger down its head. It preened and leaned into. “It’s really pretty here, I think you would have tolerated it.”
The magpie gently nipped Mobius’s finger before soothing it with its beak, and Mobius chuckled softly at it.
“So, does this mean things are done? Tap twice for yes, once for no. And if I’m crazy and you’re just a regular bird, fly off or something.”
The magpie fluttered it’s wings as if to take off, but then tapped Mobius’s hand twice.
“Everyone safe?”
It hesitated, then tapped once.
Mobius’s heart clenched.
“One of ours, or…?”
One tap.
Mobius nodded.
“What about you? You’re here like this, does that mean… are you…?”
Three nips. Yes, and no.
“Sorry,” he said, stroking the bird’s head again. It leaned into it again, then stilled and turned away, eyes sharply focused on something else.

“Nothing,” Mobius said. “At least, nothing I can say again, not if we’re out of sync. Just… I miss you.”
“I’m right here,” Loki reminded him.
“I know, but I still miss you,” Mobius added before removing his hand from the door and curling it around Loki’s jaw.
The kiss was different from the last one Loki remembered having. It was like Mobius was trying to savor it, as if time was running out.
The Variant did say he had to return, maybe that was why.
When Mobius broke the kiss, he opened the door and led Loki back out into the room.
Between one step and the next, Loki removed his control of the Variant, turning in time to see his counterpart catch Mobius by the shoulder. He turned Mobius around, catching his lips in a possessive kiss.
“You will come to Asgard at the first sign of trouble,” The Variant demanded.
“Already promised I would, Kitten,” Mobius assured. “Where’s…?”
“Here, lingering. I’m sure he will for some time after I leave, and I must leave.”
“Say hi to everyone for me,” Mobius said before the Variant took one last, quick kiss and then left the apartment.
Mobius stared at the door before sighing heavily and heading to the sofa.
“If you’re still here, Sweetheart, I’m probably just gonna watch some TV. But if you wanna stay just to stay, I’d love that.”

“If he remains off-world, we should send Sif.” Loki told him.

“I agree,” Heimdall said with a nod. “She still has treason in her heart, but understands that the kingdom as a whole would frown upon it. Even Volstagg tires of hearing it.”

Loki snorted inelegantly.

“If Hogun starts complaining, she’s truly in trouble,” he said, making the gatekeeper smirk. “Anything else?”

“No, your highness. All is well.”

“Good,” Loki said, reaching out and clapping Heimdall’s shoulder before heading back to the palace. It was unlike him, he realized. A soft gesture that would undoubtedly come back to bite him.

Soft will get one killed if they’re not careful.

Soft, his mind lamented, is for only one person.

One, Loki feared, he had well and truly driven away for good.

@mobiusismycomfortcharacter tagged me. I noticed people are ignoring drabbles, and while I 100% know those are much smaller pieces, I’m going to focus on fics over 10k because short for me tends to be less than that (apparently I don’t know how to shush)

As he was allowing himself to feel confident that the branches would continue to thrive, Loki decided to have a better look at the device and see what OB had done with the design. It was then that he noticed Sylvie’s TemPad attached to the device.

With it, Loki was able to see the timelines as the TVA would and confirm with an outside perspective that they were still thriving.

It took far too long for him to accept the reality he was facing while standing on that sliver of rock that had become his place in the universe. But when Loki finally allowed himself to think about it, he couldn’t help but laugh with joy.

He was allowed to go home.

He might not have been the Loki Odin had said it to, but when the Allfather had said that Asgard was not a place but a people, it had stuck with him. 

Home was not a place - not the TVA or Asgard - but a singular person.

Another pause, and while Loki didn’t exactly want to open his eyes, he tried, wanting to see what this exchange looked like.
He didn’t manage to so much as crack them before Renslayer sighed.
“I need the report on my desk by the end of the day.”
“I’ll get it to you.”
“And I’ll put in your transfer request.“
“I never filled one out.”
“You said you were going to.”
“I said a lot of things. I was hurt, angry, and drunk.”
“And you really think this changes anything?”
“No,” Mobius said.
