People can hate Benedict Cumberbatch without knowing anything about him but his face, but when I don’t like Frozen because it offends me on a personal level or when I don’t like John Green’s books because of his writing style, I’m a stupid person, at best.

I need better friends.

I’m not commenting on BC, I’m commenting on how you handle your dislike for Frozen.

Telling someone to do something is different than saying, “I think…”

Telling someone to do something is not sharing an opinion, it leaves no comfortable window for someone to respectfully disagree.

Telling someone to do something is forcing your way of thinking on others, which is what you’ve been advocating against since we’ve been in high school.

You shouldn’t expect people to agree with you. You should be comfortable with people disagreeing with you, not get worked up when they do so respectfully.

“Respectfully” is a pretty broad term, then.

That basically sums up the way I feel about being told I NEEEED to watch MLP, or that I HAVE to listen to somebody’s favorite artist, or that I should AVOID watching Merlin at all costs (I did anyways, oops).

I literally already told somebody on my blog this week that they could watch Frozen if they wanted to. I only have the expectation that my friends understand me when it seems like a reasonable assumption to make. And we tend to have similar interests, so I made that assumption. I genuinely considered it in your interest not to waste your time/money on the movie, but you ended up loving it. So was I wrong? Yes. Did I still try to sway your opinion? Yes. Do I appreciate vague comments about how people who dislike Frozen for x, y, and z reasons are nit-picky, unrealistic, and can’t ever be happy with something without criticizing it? No, but I sure see a lot of that around–especially from people who know that I will see it. But the difference between now and when the movie first came out is that the conflict between fans and non-fans has died down a lot, and I don’t see things aimed in my direction as much anymore, so I don’t care enough to feel angry about it. I was pretty upset at the time, and like upset people do, I wanted to talk about it. I don’t remember telling anyone explicitly NOT to see it, but I can apologize if you want it. I just don’t think that my past behavior is a good reflection of how I “handle my dislike” in the present.

My original post wasn’t even ABOUT my dislike of Frozen. I just picked it because I needed an example of popular things I don’t like for reasons that aren’t “it’s popular.”

“You should” isn’t a good way to tell people how to “share an opinion” properly after making a case against telling people what to do.

But… you didn’t keep it at a personal level. You were advocating not watching Frozen to people who hadn’t, i.e. me, because you claimed it was racist….So, um….

And it’s not okay to hate/insult Benedict Cumberbatch solely because he’s a popular white guy. It’s also pretty not okay to be put down for not liking popular things.

I’ve also told you not to set plastic window blinds on fire. I mean, it tends to be a thing that people do–they make the assumption that their friends share their interests at heart. And why does that no longer make my dislike “personal?” Because it is an opinion shared by multiple people, or because I express it?

So I walked into the dentist this morning. My dentist asked me how my weekend was. I said “Good, I watched Captain America last night. I really liked it.” And my dentist says “Oh, my son is in that movie.” At first I thought he was joking but then I realized

true friendship doesn’t necessarily mean sharing the same fandoms; it means being willing to listen to each other talk even though it might be about a fandom you don’t know shit about

Basically, my friends aren’t true friends because they…

Sure, but I’ve noticed particular times when you’ve taken something as a direct offense to your liking for Sherlock when it clearly was not. I think you might perceive things that don’t really happen as often as you think them to.

Not to mention, and no hate here, but more recently, you’ve turned any and all topics to your fangirling about Sherlock. When we have nothing to respond to that with but something to change the topic, you shouldn’t get offended, like you have before.

Not saying that there may not be people that will hate on you for simply being a fan of Sherlock, but I’m not afraid to say that you’ve been defensively hypersensitive lately and I think that you’re taking things to heart around school more than you should, or more than you would’ve, say, at the start of the year.

Right, let me just contain my excitement that after two years, Sherlock was about to come back. This being the show with the fandom that has saved my life on multiple occasions. No big. I also don’t know what else to talk about since I’ve already been called out for expressing my opinions about other things, and I’d really rather avoid conflict.

I dunno about the hypersensitive bit, just because people have ALWAYS told me I get offended too easily or that I cry too much, but shit has really gone downhill this year, and more than anything, I have to reevaluate what I actually want in my life. But it’d be nice if people supported me. You know, instead of changing the subject whenever I actually come up with something to say.

And, I mean, not having something to say is one thing. But being like “ugh, she’s at it again” is another. That is GOING to hurt. It sure seems like a good enough reason for me to be upset.

Then TALK ABOUT THE SHOW. All you do is squee like a fangirl or complain about the fandom and it’s like :| we can only take so much of this.

If something else is going on that you’re having trouble with, it’s kind of hard to support you if you don’t talk about it. How am I supposed to help a damn problem if I don’t fucking know what it is?

And I know that people have always told you you cry too much or whatever, but this is to a different level. As your friend, before, I just knew you to be a sensitive person, fine. But in the last few months, it’s like walking on eggshells. It’s not that you have opinions about things, it’s that you don’t seem to be able to discuss opinions anymore without getting offended by it and then being passive aggressive for a long time after that. This isn’t the Mercy I used to know.

I talk about a good majority of my problems, like my asshole best friend or my awful parents. It’s just that they don’t change, and I get the feeling that my stories are just really intrusive and uninteresting. And I dunno, I mean I’ll talk about nonprom and whatever it is that we’re supposed to talk about, because that’s fun, but when whatsumface is around, I’m not going to go into detail about deeply personal things, because I’m not CLOSE to them. AND IF YOU’RE READING THIS, I SAY HI.

I mean, all I’ve gotten from you about Dracula is that it’s not as cheesy as it seems and I should watch it, aka nothing that actually makes me actively consider watching it. And if I try talking Harry potter with Johnny, she just talks about how much she loves Luna and how perfect it is.

If you want my opinion, let me just say that sex makes me uncomfortable, and that is something which i proclaim often enough that it should be understood. And the bit about goat sex was particularly anxiety-inducing, and I felt like ripping my skin off because it was squicky and scary and kind of triggering on a really not-okay level. And it’s not that fun hearing that apparently it’s unreasonable for me to be upset about that.

Thanks.

Hey, you just reblogged a thing that says true friendship is being able to talk about masturbation without being weird, and if you talk to me about masturbation, I will flip my shit and be hella uncomfortable/disturbed, so clearly I’M not a true friend.

Like, you I can deal with, because you don’t do this NEARLY as often as other people that we both know, and you don’t go around saying “MY FANDOM IS BETTER THAN YOURS.” But when people insult me based on the fact that I like Sherlock, I am going to get really pissed.

- Tag up to 11 people and link them to the post

- Tell them you tagged them

Questions

  1. What kinds of things really make you laugh?
Really unexpected, stupid things on the internet.
And Chris, the trumpet who sits next to me in band.
  2. What’s your favorite place in the entire world?
Matt’s arms. Well that was stupid.
Propped up in a bundle of blankets on something cushy with something electronic in my lap, idk. I’m not overly fond of any place in my house, now that all the furniture’s been moved around, and my view on school as a safe space is just no at this point, and I don’t really go anywhere else.
Or maybe onstage. Because I used to always sneak into the theater after school and just sit in the middle of the stage. Or, well, it used to be a great feeling before my life shit started seeping into drama.
    :/ I don’t know.
  3. Favorite movie, actor, producer, and/or composer?
Movie: Mulan or The Parent Trap (with Lohan)
Composer: Sam Hazo for contemporary, Haydn for classical, Jay Brannan for folk/pop/non-instrumental
  4. What kind of person do you want to be?
    Dead.
I want to know what the Hell I’m doing in life. I want to be confident. I want things to come naturally to me. I want to know lots of things. I want to stop being dependent on other people to cater to my whims. I want to be able to speak without unintentionally sounding like an ass.
  5. What is your favorite word (any language)? Why?
In English, it’d be mercy, but idk if that counts because that’s my name, but then again, it’s only my name because it’s my favorite word, rofl
“Sartenazo” in Spanish. I learned it last night. “Sartén” means “frying pan” and the augmentative suffix “-azo” signifies “a blow resulting from.” So “sartenazo” is basically a blow received from a frying pan. SERIOUSLY, SPANISH IS SO AWESOME BECAUSE YOU CAN MAKE A WORD LIKE THAT SKGFHDKGGFHJ YES THIS IS WHAT I’VE CHOSEN TO DO WITH MY LIFE.
In French, it’d be “chou” (cabbage), “revanche” (revenge, again my name), or “voudrais” (would like).
  6. Pet Peeves?
Hearing people eat, chew, smack, squelch, crunch, munch, slurp, gulp, om nom nom. I live with goddamn Chinese people. They are the worst about this. At a certain point, I really do have to advocate for cultural assimilation.
And people who misuse words. I get so pissed when people use imprecise or inaccurate language. Which is a pretty high standard, since I have language problems and clutter in basically every sentence.
  7. What do you hate most about yourself? Why?
I don’t get over shit. Ask my first ex ever. I’m sure he has lots of stories. And because it’s painful to keep thinking about things and hating myself and getting angry and feeling guilty and all that, you know, based on whatever the thing is.
  8. What is your best friend like?
Perfect. And an asshole. I dunno. Mixed feelings. I write about him too much, I should stop.
  9. Are you an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert, but no one will believe me. So according to anyone I’ve ever spoken to, I’m an extrovert. Because I’m loud or something. Damn energy suckers.
  10. What is your biggest regret?
    Biggest?
Dumping an amazing guy because an asshole led me on.
    Which really changed things.
And made me lose someone I had considered my very best of best friends.
And I think I hurt him.
I have zero hesitations in saying that is my biggest regret.
And I wish I knew how to say I was sorry.
Because that was completely my fault, and I’ve learned to take responsibility for that day.
    So yeah.
  11. What do you find attractive (platonically or not)?
MATT’S FUCKING EYES BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY I HAVEN’T MADE A BIG ENOUGH DEAL OF THIS YET.
Certain kinds of eyes. I mean, I guess color has nothing to do with it. Just eyes with a LOT of color. I dunno. Specific peoples’ eyes.

My Questions

  1. Is there one particular day of your life upon which you reflect frequently?
  2. Would you rather cry alone or cry in front of other people?
  3. What is your addictive of choice?
  4. Have you ever been mistaken for the wrong gender/sex?
  5. What is/was your favorite teacher in school like?
  6. Would you rather only be able to read or write?
  7. Is there a soul?
  8. Do you laugh when you are alone?
  9. Would you rather sit on a beach or sit in front of a fireplace?
  10. What is your favorite comfort object?
  11. Can you pat your head and rub your belly?

WHOEVER MADE THIS I LOVE YOU AND I HOPE YOUR FRIDGE IS ALWAYS FULL

It’s weird because like, even the movie footage itself has their skin darker than the merchandise- it’s REALLY weird- the bottom one looks much more natural!

I just love the whole “Aurora’s dress is fucking blue okay” aspect

And Cinderella’s was white.

:-D

Ariel’s was pink!

AND CINDERELLA FINALLY HAS HER STRAWBERRY BLONDE HAIR BACK

‘It’s weird’ is code for 'wow whitewashing is real’

This is for people who don’t understand when I say Disney being less racist than before doesn’t make it NOT racist.

No, this is bullshit because 1) How do you know someone ELSE didn’t white wash this? and 2) If the top ones are from packaging, there’s a reason they’re lighter, and it’s not because of fucking racism.

When you design a package, you want bright colors. You want images and colors that are going to catch a kid’s eye and make them want to whine to their parents about getting it. And they will add any slight variation to a toy to be able to make more of them so that kids will continue to want to collect them. This is why Ariel and Aurora have different dresses. Anything they can grasp at.

They’re not promoting lighter skin, they’re promoting neon fucking dress colors.

Oh, and btw, given that that first image is pretty poorly white washed, I’m willing to bet someone other than a professional package designer designed it.

This isn’t racism, people.

If you go SEARCHING for racism, you’re going to find it anywhere you look, because you want to.

So why shouldn’t SKIN COLOR stay the same? Or at least RELATIVELY similar? Yes, it’s one thing to adjust tints and shades in order to make these princesses more visually appealing side-by-side (as the OP pointed out in a different post relating to this campaign, some of these characters come from movies that are darker in color overall, which is why they look strange in comparison). However, ALL of the princesses of color are significantly lighter than their movie selves. THAT is unnecessary. In real life, when celebrities get shopped, they loose sweat sheens or get shadows enhanced/lightened or get their ribs dislocated, yeah, but never their SKIN COLOR. Kids are more likely to come across the product version of princesses than their movie version (because we tend to go shopping more often than we watch a specific movie). As a result, the product versions and collaborations are more likely to influence how they remember these princesses. By changing the color palate so dramatically, designers are promoting lighter skin as a norm for Disney princesses. When -I- first saw this post, I thought the bottom set was way too dark… and then I realized that the bottom actually matched movie colors, and that I’d been looking at the top set for too long.

I told you about how it irks me when people cast half-black actors as fully-black characters. As a society, we should have no problem acknowledging the fact that ethnicity and skin color comes in different shades, and yet there’s still a stigma. Making Tatiana lighter is like a form of erasure, because it’s saying “well, black is black, so as long as we keep her black, it’s not racist.”

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM is a different skin color between the two images. You’re ignoring that. You made the argument that society is in this stigma of “well black is black” no matter the shade. You’re doing the same thing here with white skin by NOT acknowledging that. “Well white is white.”

And like I said, this is REALLY bad white washing. Snow White’s eyes are POSSESSED. I’m willing to bet this was just poorly shopped. *I* could do a better job re-tinting this for packaging.

Yeah, they’re all getting lightened, but they are not evenly lightened. The PoC’s go through a more dramatic change than the white ones do. So that’s the root of why I’m pissed off by this.

Also, yeah, they’ve all got these weird yellow tints to their skin that looks really unnatural. I don’t dig it.

“More dramatic” is relative: Pocahontas became fucking line art, and Jasmine is neon peach, meanwhile Snow White and Ariel are fucking vampires. They weren’t just lightened, they were changed color completely. Not to mention, that’s not the Rapunzel from the movie, so they can’t say that she’s a different color in the movie :| Again, all evidence that some amateur fuck noodle did this. So call THEM racist. Or…just bad a fucking graphic design, I don’t know.

omg I died at Pocahontas.

But yeah, okay, fair enough. I have much higher expectations than this for Disney, since they gets so much exposure, and so this stupid picture just feels like “uggh, are you kidding me, Disney?” because I believe that everything that comes from a company or group in general reflects upon it and its standards. So yeah, whoever decided it was okay to do a bunch of princess redesigns however long ago seems to have been a turning point signalling the downfall of princess portrayals. Or something.

I tried to do a reverse Google search to figure out where this came from, but apparently that doesn’t work on mobile…

You’re right in assuming Disney as a corporation should have higher standards…in graphic designers, because seriously, that top image is just a piece of shit, like, come on, really. My six-year-old nephew could do better than, like, seriously.

The more I think about it, the more I think the original image features the redesigned princesses placed together into one image. Like, if you look at the OP’s blog, there’s another post where they show a side-by-side of each princess with advertised/original colors, with their whole bodies, uneclipsed. So I think the OP just took the individual princess pictures and lined them up together to make them fit in one photo, instead of however many. And that should explain why the drawing style (line art) differs.
