Subject to future continuous, even extensive, revision, as there are a number of series which:
- Are still airing currently and therefore which I obviously haven't finished as it's impossible to do so
- Are finished airing, but which I'm to date at the time of writing this still behind on and have yet to finish myself personally - a few seasonals from the spring and summer I have a few episodes left to go on, or in some cases more than half their run/length
- I'm aware of the existence of and noted an interest in potentially watching in the future, but have yet to get around to actually starting and watching - this includes seasonals from the past few seasons (right now I can think of and name summer titles specifically) and the current autumn season
So given that, once I finish those certain series and start for the first time and finish other ones, my list and overall opinion and stance may change considerably. That doesn't have to happen within the confines of this year either (the little over three weeks left of this year). It can be in another year or two or five or more from now. Since I watch series from past years (that used to be all I did before getting into seasonals), so I may watch a 2025 series in 2035, gods willing if I'm still alive and lucid, and then the list may change upon doing so. That's always the case with all these seasonal and year top lists, not specific to this one, nor is it an immediate concern in this list's current assemblage, but just wanted to clarify and reiterate that point again here.
Also, I won't be including continuing or returning pre-2025 series which either started in 2024 or an earlier year and ran into 2025 or which started in 2024 or an earlier year and then stopped and returned with a separate new season in 2025. I'm just counting brand new to 2025 series. That's what I always do and it helps me keep series heavily associated with the individual season and year they originally came out in, in my mind, and I don't like blurring the lines.
If I were including pre-2025 series, then it would be a simple matter, as they would probably occupy the top three spots as I'd say that my favorite things released this year in general were Arknights season 3, The Apothecary Diaries season 2, and Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon season 2. Instead I'll leave those series where they belong, as representatives of some of my top series, in my top five, of their own original release years of 2022 and 2023, respectively.
Anyway:
1.) Tasokare Hotel
2.) Ruri no Houseki
3.) Ameku Takao no Suiri Karte
4.) Sorairo Utility
5.) Gnosia
6.) Kowloon Generic Romance
7.) Kijin Gentoushou
8.) Apocalypse Hotel
9.) Ballpark de Tsukamaete!
10.) Debu to Love to Ayamachi to!
So that's three series from winter, four from spring, one from summer, and two from autumn. I found summer probably the weakest season for new series, winter home to most of my top favorite ones of the year, and the general variety and assortment being best in probably spring and then autumn.
Runners-up/honorable mentions: Leviathan, Uchuujin Muumuu, See You Tomorrow at the Food Court, Fermat no Ryouri, and Shabake
Series I've started but am still catching up, either with a few episodes left or halfway through or less: 9: Ruler's Crown, Uchuujin Muumuu, Summer Pockets, Hotel Inhumans, and Shirohiyo - Reincarnated as a Neglected Noble: Raising My Baby Brother With Memories From My Past Life
Series I've yet to start but have made a note of mentally and/or on MAL or elsewhere to get around to: Takopii no Genzai, Necronomico no Cosmic Horror Show, Lord of Mysteries, Wei Miao Rensheng, Wandance, and Sanda
(and I'm sure I'm leaving off a few)
Also, the implications of what this means for the year taken as a whole: I would say that this year was definitely weaker for me (again, as always, only considering and taking new series into account) than either 2024 or 2023, but better than 2022. 2022 was, I thought (despite a few great series like Lycoris Recoil and Arknights), the worst year in decades, on a similar level to 2009 and maybe apart from 2009 the worst since the early 90s or before.
