we talk a lot about sex positive asexuals on this site but i never see much discussion about sex repulsed allosexuals. if you find people attractive yet can't enjoy sex for whatever reason, i wish you a happy comfortable life. you're not broken or missing anything. i love you.

Im really curious how people know about Esperanto. Since its a relatively recent language (from the 1880s), its obviously not going to be as widely spoken in the world as other languages (altho apparently it is the most widely spoken constructed language). I assume most people are introduced to it later in some way?

If u know what Esperanto is, feel free 2 reblog this and say how you learned about it in the tags.

Being playfully rude with someone who doesn't know you on the internet is actually identical to just being rude

"I'm not an asshole! I only spoke to you, a complete stranger who doesn't know my good and pure heart, in a way that is indistinguishable from how an asshole would!"

if you want to see how fast something can change from a "right" to a "privilege" in people's minds, try suggesting it should be extended to children, immigrants, and prisoners

Also also- pointing out a stereotype and how it can be harmful doesn't mean that the real existing people who fit that mold are also harmful.

Listen idk about you but I sure do like the taste of watermelon, lemonade, fried chicken, and soul food. I got big lips and a big nose and a big ass and I even used to have big boobs before I chopped them shits off. I can play basketball and I used to run track. I sure do use AAVE when speaking with other black folks and also I like seasoning on my food and specifically I like my food hot and spicy and full of salt and butter. I like my music to have a good beat and I like to listen to it loud. I dropped out of college so I guess I don't count as college educated and I sure am poor as shit and even used to live off food stamps and even still I qualify for government subsidies. I was on that Obamacare getting free healthcare for a year too!

And you know what? Each of those is still used as a harmful stereotype, but it is not harmful for me, as a person, to exist. When it is used to harm, it is used as proof of inferiority and to incite derision. There is no harm in someone of my skin color enjoying the taste of fried chicken and the sound of the drums. I am not hurting anyone by existing as me. But people will use that existence to harm others, and that's where the stereotype becomes harmful.

Pointing out that people tend to stereotype trans men as exclusive bottoms (and trans women as exclusive tops!) only capable of having PIV sex does not mean that if you specifically fit that mold that you are bad. It means that people from outside of the community use this to harm others, and as evidence that someone is inferior. You are not bad for being who you are. It is those who use your existence as a weapon who are harmful.

I feel like tumblr users could stand to be a bit more humble abt people misinterpreting their art

people truly get so phenomenally pissed off about others tagging their art with character names or not realizing that something was a Deeply Personal Vent Piece and like. while I get how frustrating that is I do feel that if you can't take the thought of someone not getting your work (and see it as an intentional personal slight against you, The Artist) then you simply should not be attempting to share it with an audience of thousands of people who have literally zero context beyond briefly seeing a picture on their dash

1000% correct. and it isn't the userbase being 70% white, it's that they act aggressively disgusted and angry if anyone even mentions blackness and black culture or that racism and white privilege exist. If you so much as insinuate that one white woman posted something racist they will relentlessly dogpile and gangstalk you. Remember that blackout day started by black tumblr desperately BEGGING white people to post/rb black people once a year. But in response, people said "no, black people aren't aesthetic enough for my theme" or "no, you're being too political and black people are too serious a subject to post" but then they would make 1000 posts about how being trans is worse than racism. and if you even mention rap or r&b or hip-hop on here people will lose their damn minds. Every black woman I used to follow was either chased off the site, caved from the constant misogynoirism and hostility, or were so ignored by their "friends" that they left.

Last year the press focused on Joe Biden's health to the point of pushing him out of a race after primary voters had selected him as their candidate. This year we have a president with some obvious health concerns and we, for some reason, can't talk about it, despite the fact that it certainly appears that people in the White House (Stephen Miller) and executive branch (Russell Vought) are directing actions and puppeting Trump in ways that suggest illegality. The fact that they are likely able to do this because of Trump's health means his health is of incredible concern, but I guess what mattered for Joe Biden, who wasn't drone striking fishermen and using the U.S. military against American citizens, doesn't merit journalistic investigation now.

And I keep hearing, "Well, the media is run by billionaires who support this behavior." So, what? We don't even bother criticizing them? They just get away with it without even a mean tweet? Come on.

The thing that kills me is that Trump was in worse health than Biden a year ago and the mainstream press refused to bring it up. Trump has declined markedly since entering office. He had visible signs of dementia (his rambling speeches, inability to remember simple words he used to know and the way his gait favors one side of his body are all signs of dementia and yes he had them a year ago...). He had a stroke in public almost a month ago, and you can still see the effects when he opens his mouth. That is not a small, transient stroke. It's a major stroke with permanent damage. His speech is still slurred and part of his face droops when he opens his mouth. (My theory is they've given him botox to stop the droop while his face is still). There is of course the mysterious permabruise, badly covered with makeup and his swollen ankles that point to a chronic heart condition.

Trump never released any medical records, has selected a quack to be his personal physician and I can't believe we just bypass rules that have held for every other fucking president we've had, once again, for Trump.

You don't need to be a doctor to see all these really obvious symptoms of chronic conditions, any of one which would be serious enough to get him removed immediately. And if anyone in his family or inner circle gave a SHIT about him or the country or the world in general, they would guide him toward resignation or blowing the whistle on his shit health.

people should be allowed to have low ambition, and also be able to feed a family on the salary of a cashier at a convenience store.

if a job of some kind is necessary -and though it’s not like being, say, a garbage man, it makes sense for clerks of some kind to continue to exist- then the person doing that job shouldn’t make poverty wages. the idea that some jobs are just worth underpaying in general is wrong, because it creates a chronically mistreated and undervalued group of people who are nonetheless keeping society functioning with their work.

gentle reminder that when you're commenting on someone's work (e.g. fanwork), please read back what you wrote and ask yourself "does this language sound indistinguishable from hate? is knowing me personally a requirement for understanding my tone?" before you hit send. i feel like i get a lot of comments from complete strangers that are completely indistinguishable between "legitimately complaining about the work" and "trying to 'playfully roast' OP in a loving way". you're a stranger to me. i cannot tell which it is, so my brain assumes the former

This doesn't just apply to commenting on art or writing or something, this applies to every interaction you have with people you do not know personally. Or even casually--as in, you've had multiple conversations with them in a discord server or something, and you are both familiar with the way you interact and speak to each other.

I once replied to a comment from someone (who is now a friend) with something snarky that they took seriously, because they didn't read my dry sense of humor in it. They didn't know me all that well, and I didn't take that into consideration when I wrote it. They dmed me and asked about it and I apologized profusely for hurting their feelings.

Tone indicators are a good way to head this type of thing off, but they're not really my thing, so I simply try to keep my comments and replies worded in ways that I hope carry the tone I intend.

It's very easy to fall into "internet speak", ie, the "crying screaming throwing up I hate this" kind of comment that is supposed to convey extreme like of something. But it's also very easy for the receiver to not understand that, and make it seem like you actually hated it.

And before you think "but everyone knows what that means!", no. No they don't. Your tone isn't universal, that internet slang/dialogue, and the little inside jokes or 'loving roasts' or whatever you think you're doing can come across very differently to someone who doesn't know you.

Keep in mind how much you know the person you're commenting/replying to. If you've never spoken, if you have no personal history with them, stick with very straight-forward language and terminology to make sure you're well understood, and you don't hurt the op's feelings, or confuse the hell out of them.

Basically I think a lot of White ppl think the antithesis to racism is "Black people are inherently Cool, White people are inherently Lame" and it's just very hard to convince them that this is also extremely racist lmfao

It's the combination of "seeing a racialized group as Fundamentally Inherently Good is still dehumanizing and you aren't seeing them as people" and "your self-flagellating White guilt is extremely annoying for the people of color around you to deal with"

I would love to make one post about aotearoa without people bringing up hobbits on it to be so honest with you guys

listen I understand. they're amazing movies and I do think it's awesome that they were filmed here!!!!! but holy shit! it's the only thing anyone seems to be able to talk about when there is ANY discussion of these islands!! I would super love to be able to discuss our ecology, politics, culture, landscapes, and people without needing to hear about hobbiton every single time

I don't knowwww. it shouldn't be a huge deal but at the same time, the image an overwhelming amount of people have of aotearoa comes from those movies. our struggling ecosystems get overshadowed by fields and grassy hills and other non-native biomes that were explicitly chosen to depict the england-inspired fantasy land of middle earth. these same biomes only exist here because english settlers historically slashed and burned massive swaths of forest to create them, and now they're framed as famous and beautiful. mass deforestation of precious native forests. I don't know man. it annoys me juuuuust a little when every other post I make about this place gets a lotr joke plastered on it.

tourists are so often SO disrespectful of important māori concepts it drives me nuts. and having a massively popular movie filmed here made that 1000x worse. godddd. can people remember they're visitors to a location belonging to and treasured by māori for a thousand years, not just their favourite filmset please

“What if I told you there was one place

"Bingo!"

"That was the queue number for the tanning booth."

"Oh, sorry. Is my canoe ready, at least?"

"We'll get to it once we're done with your sweaters. Would you like your will notified while you wait?"

*(BRAT stands for bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. "Similar" in this context means you ate those foods in addition to other foods, or at least two of these foods were represented and the other foods eaten could be seen as substitutes. For instance, my household sickness staples were toast, rice, apple juice, oranges, and peanut butter, which I would consider similar).
