hey that valley oak probably doesn't need to be tied to stakes anymore but you could keep the stakes there so people don't hit it with a weedwacker
trees need to grow up with wind stress so that they can develop good taper to their trunk
Yeah! Though I can only take credit for the updates and photographs. The tree began sprouting there naturally and then community volunteers took over. I assume they are with an arbor society or have consulted one about the care because it’s doing so well. All of the mature valley oaks are tagged here.
They put up the original supports and caution tape so that city landscaping wouldn’t mow it over. There’s a bucket there with a hole drilled through the bottom that people put water into during the dry months to help it along until its roots are deep enough to sustain it. It’s especially great to see it thrive because we lost 5-6 mature oaks and even more Redwoods during the big storms here on New Years.
I see the volunteers out there all the time. Next time I’ll show them how many people are rooting for our little tree!
I had a close encounter with an owl this morning before the sun rose and I just have to admit to you all here and now: if I was <20 lb I would not be here to make this post right now.
I felt no wind, heard no sound, only a vague sense of something nearby before I glanced over my shoulder right as an entire owl flew passed me. Maybe a foot of clearance between us.
Just saw a teenager in the wild wearing a Korn shirt in this the year 2025. Effervescent behaviors.
Nature is healing. 🙌
