Hello,

I've got a problem and I don't know how to solve it: A wrote a Python 
which reads in some experimental data, performs some calculations and 
writes new data (array) to a file. Then I needed a tool which can 
perform fits with arbitrary functions and parameters -- I found Gnuplot. 
The fit for my data looks really good. But the most important thing for 
me would be, to be able to read in the values of my parameters which 
Gnuplot calculated, to Python. Is this possible? If yes, how? Or is 
there another program which can do these fits (I checked SciPy, but as 
far as I could see, it can only handle spline fits)? With my Python 
script I have to read in several hundered data sets, doing the fit with 
Gnuplot (and hopefully reading in the parameters to Python), but anyway 
working with Gnuplot's fit.log file "manually" is no option.

numeric_version *is* a module:

I seem to be throwing an error with python interperting
"numeric_version" as an actual module.  I was thinking about changing
the install script, but know that I must be doing something else wrong
to begin with. Any ideas?

My previous installation problem is now solved. Hurray! But, now I have a=
 new problem. Trying to=20
actually plot in python brings up a string of errors. My code goes as suc=
h (as per the instructions in a=20
manual I was given):

The arrays xx and yy have been previously defined. It's the last line tha=

You don't need to be administrator,...but it helps.

Otherwise, you can instead install in your local directory. Make a
folder to install into. On my system, I created "/home/no228/python".
Then run install as follows:
"python setup.py install --prefix /home/no228/python"

Then, set the environment variable PYTHONPATH to include this new
location, so that python will be able to find these locally-installed
libraries.

On my system (bash):
"export PYTHONPATH=/home/no228/python/lib/python2.4/site-packages"

To test, type:
$ python
>>> from Gnuplot import *
(there shouldn't be any error messages)

Thanks. The problem is that it's my personal computer, and I'm set as the=
 admin, so I don't know why it=20
won't recognise me. I did change the access so that anyone could rwx, but=
 that didn't seem to do=20
anything. When I entered the "su" command and entered my password, it was=
 rejected. Do you know=20
what's going on?

Alan is right, you don't have the necessary permissions.  If you are
an administrator on the computer you can simply use the "sudo" command
immediately before the install command like

sudo python setup.py install

It will ask for your password and then install it for you.  I didn't
have any issues when I installed it on Tiger.
