Man, I’m kind of bummed out that the best resources for deer anatomy and body language are all on hunting sites. I mean, it makes sense, but it’s still kind of disorienting to be reading along and then have a description end with like, “…so if you see the buck’s ears do that, stay still and keep your gear from making noise”. I’m not crouching in the grass with a compound bow, I’m just an artist! I just want to draw a bunch of fake fictional deer and deer-adjacent creatures, not put on some forest camo and hunt me a Big Antler Boy or w/e in real life!!
Yeesh, I bet I’m going to get targeted ads about hunting equipment now. Just another way that the Research Struggle can be really real sometimes.
Here are amazing deer skeletal references by Rico LeBrun! They were created during production of Disney’s Bambi, to help aid the artists.

Retta Scott’s
character development sketches for
Bambi
(1942).
Retta Scott was originally hired as a story development artist on Bambi in 1938. But when Walt Disney noticed some of her story drawings, he moved her into the animation unit to help animate Bambi. Upon the film’s release, Scott became the first female animator ever given a screen credit at the Walt Disney Studios.
You know Dasher, and Dancer, and Prancer, and Vixen, Comet, and Cupid, and Donner and Blitzen But do you recall The most famous reindeer of all
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer!!
I can finally post what I’ve been working on all through the month of November! I did all of Santa’s reindeer as retro-y/pinup/centaur ladies!! I had a lot of fun with this ;3;
The new MLP comic introduces DEER and they’re basically the elves of the MLP universe. They harness magic from the natural environment, like zebras. They live at the very center of the Everfree Forest, and their ruler is King Aspen, also known as “The Heart of the Forest”.
i got to play with a cintiq today it was really fun!!!! i think her deer half is too small for her human upper half and i should have used deer/people reference but it was so nice to do some digital art without struggling with a tablet
no i think her proportions are perfect and adorable! i much prefer this to tiny human half, giant animal half type creatures! c:
