The Best Skins for the Best Tech
Every so often in your life, you treat yourself to a really cool piece of tech, something that you may not really need as you already have something that does the job, but your lust for that piece of kit grows to a point that it justifies you buying it. And when this thing of beauty arrives, you want to keep it in its original pristine condition, protect it from the wear of daily life but also let everyone know “I have it, look, it’s so cool!”
For me, that cool piece of kit was the new M1 MacBook Pro, a space grey sliver of design beauty wrapping game changing tech to give one of the most efficient and powerful laptop computers currently available. Easing it out of the tight restraint of its immaculate box, I placed it on my desk – which doubles as a creative space for my painting – next to my old machine ready to transfer data. And that’s when the realisation hit me. The dings and scratches covering my old machine (which could affect its trade in value), well I didn’t want those all over this wonderous new grey Apple. I needed to look after it better than I did the last.
But I also wanted to make a statement. A small statement. Nothing too loud, just let people know I had got one, that it was mine, and reflect my character and personality a little.
First stop Amazon. Stacks of hard-shell cases, a few skins, though these were limited to just the lid of the laptop, all cheaply printed, with naff unimaginative follow the crowd designs. Uug. No good.
Googling around, a few skin producers surfaced, but again most of these were again at the cheaper, naffer unimaginative end of the skin and case spectrum. Then I found EasySkinz.
It was pretty clear from the first page that these guys could be good at what they do, but I like to do my research so I browsed their site – in detail. I was struck by the sheer range of designs available, quality, imaginative designs, and for as many device types as you could think of (and I bet they’d create something for a really obscure device if you asked them nicely). The promise of 3M materials for a premium product, the fact that they catered for all of the different versions of the MacBook Pro (the measurements differ very slightly between them), a promise of great customer service, fast delivery, aftercare – all swayed my decision to buy from them. Yes, I took a couple more hours looking at other retailers, and no, the 10% initial discount wasn’t a big influencer (I would have brought from them anyway) – it was just so evident that EasySkinz was head and shoulder above everyone else.
So, purchase was made, after spending quite some time umming and aahing over which one to buy – it took a while to narrow my choice down as there were so many to choose from. I settled on the Signature Abstract Painting Skin – go check it out.
True to their word, delivery was quick. They estimate a max of 5 days in the UK, mine arrived in 3, slid quietly through the door in a cleverly branded envelope by the good old Royal Mail. And that envelope and all of the packaging holding the skins inside it is further evidence of EasySkinz quality and attention to detail – it’s all high-quality and cleverly branded: I’ve kept it all.
The skin itself – beautiful! There’s a robustness to the material way beyond that used in other skins I have had in the past. The print is pin sharp all over and the attention to detail in the cut of the pattern to fit my machine is just so good – it fits perfectly. It was dead simple to apply – thanks to the clear video on their incredibly extensive YouTube channel (there seems to be video for every type of skins), and I love the fact that the stuff used to get it to adhere to the surfaces (not sure I can call it glue) is activated and set by gently using a hairdryer. So if I ever peel it off (unlikely, though I may decide to change skins at some point), just gently heat it, peel it back, no sticky residue or marks left on my MacBook pro. And the skin can be reused. Lovely!
This has been a long review, but you need to know how good these guys are. EasySkinz produce, in my opinion, simply the best protective and creative skins out there. The designs on them, the accuracy of the cutting to match device dimensions, the packaging they are sent to you in, the customer care, speed of turn around, fitting videos, the purchase process, the website – even the packaging they are sent to you in, are head and shoulders above the rest. Seriously, seriously good. If you want a skin to protect your latest and greatest gadget, just go and buy from them. The competition aren’t worth looking at!
