Recommendations to others considering Upwork:

Make sure you vet your candidates, Many claim to know everything but do not. Make sure they are responsive, many are half way around the world and many not get back to you if you need them. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Upwork solving and how is that benefiting you?

When I need help I have found many qualified candidates on the site. Many are from other countries so they get work done while I sleep. They have all cost levels so I can pick according to budget. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Freelancer infected Google Sheet w/phishing malware & Upwork responded with "arbitration" w/ scammer"

What do you like best about Upwork?

Upwork does connect you with freelancers around the world who are mostly pretty good workers and at low cost Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Upwork?

I hired a freelancer through Upwork who placed phishing malware in the Google Sheet that I gave the freelancer editing access to. Luckily Google noticed the phishing malware and placed a big, yellow warning banner on the Google Sheet, and Google also sent me a warning email. When I complained to Upwork with the proof from Google - sending them a link to the Sheet and a screenshot of the email from Google - and asked for the money back that I had paid the freelancer, Upwork weirdly insisted that I enter into arbitration with the freelancer where he got a chance to "tell his side of the story". The freelancer infected my Google Sheet with phishing malware. You can't "negotiate" with a scammer. Of course he's going to deny it. It's just a weird way for Upwork to do business. Under the circumstances, my request for $150 back is extremely reasonably, considering I lost a day of my time trying to remove malware from the Sheet, re-doing his work, and delaying my project.

As if this weren't enough, the way the arbitration is set up, when I responded to the arbitration request from my professional email, my signature line showed up in the arbitration documentation. So now the scammer has access to my contact information because he can see all the documents in the arbitration. And there is no way for me to delete or edit that record from the arbitration. Upwork's disregard for security is pretty alarming. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is Upwork solving and how is that benefiting you?

It is typically pretty easy to find a good freelance data entry on Upwork at a reasonable cost.

I understand things happen and that Upwork can't screen every freelancer for problems. There are going to be bad actors.

It's just that when I sent Upwork printed evidence of phishing malware in the Google Sheet Upwork responded in such an ineffectual, unconcerned and weird way about finding out there was a scammer on their staff.

If the freelancer denies it - which of course he will - is Upwork going to let him infect someone else's document with phishing malware?
