"Not. Dead. Yet." panted Valeria Banning behind a sour-tasting gag. She still had half a chance to survive." The Collegium Council sheriff for SE US follows the rules. Nancy Northcott’s childhood ambition was to grow up and become Wonder Woman. Around fourth grade, she realized it was too late to acquire Amazon genes, but she still loved comic books, science fiction, fantasy and YA romance. A sucker for fast action and wrenching emotion, Nancy combines the romance and high stakes she loves in the books she writes.
Her debut novel, Renegade, received a starred review from Library Journal. The reviewer called it “genre fiction at its best.” Nancy is a three-time RWA Golden Heart finalist and has won the Maggie, the Molly, the Emerald City Opener, and Put Your Heart in a Book.
Married since 1987, Nancy and her husband have one son, a bossy dog, and a house full of books.
Generally speaking I found Renegade entertaining. It started with a bang and is action packed from beginning to end which I like. The fast pace did mean that there were a couple of times where I felt a little confused or failed to understand what exactly was going on, and I thought some of the more fantasy aspects of the book could have been explained more but for the most part it was fine.
I thought the story line was good, I really enjoy fantasy and love to see it in a romance book instead of the usual historical and PNR. The plot was really entertaining and it kept me interested all the way through.
For the most part I really liked the characters too. Valeria is strong but is also not afraid to show her emotions where the romance is concerned which is something I really liked about her. There are many forms of courage and Valeria showed she possessed them in battle and in the romance. I think she is fair and kind and I loved the way she handled Griffins silliness towards the end.
I mostly liked Griffin, as a guy he was brave, caring and smart but as a boyfriend he was a bit of an idiot. He is constantly making excuses as to why he and Valeria cannot and should not be together. Worse is his habit of making decisions for her because he knows what is best for her. I HATE it when this happens and it put me off of him a little bit.
The big problem for me was the romance. At first I didn’t feel the chemistry, and then I felt the ‘will they won’t they’ section of the book went on for far too long. And when they finally get together it is drama, after drama, after drama. I would not have minded if the romance was the main plot of the book but it wasn’t, there was so much other stuff going on that it all felt crammed in and by the end I was a little exhausted.
I found Renegade to be a mostly easy and entertaining read. it was far from perfect but I still found it enjoyable.
Wow… yep, that pretty much sums it up…. wow! I’m guessing you’re expecting more from a review, huh? Okay, if you insist. ;)
‘Not. Dead. Yet. Valeria Banning panted behind the sour-tasting gag. She still had half a chance to survive.’ Honestly, when the first line in a book packs that much of a punch, how can you not continue reading?
This book came to me out of the blue. It wasn’t on my radar, the author is brand new and I hadn’t seen much about it anywhere. Trust, me when I say that when Renegade is released in November, 2012, you need to pick it up. I can’t remember the last time I read a book that started off with as much action as this one did. There were some lulls here and there, but it pretty much had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. It’s one of those reads that grabs you and doesn’t let go.
Talk about your tortured and broken heros. Griffin was about as broken as they come as far as trust went. He had spent the past 6 years of his life on the run from the very people he was trying to protect. Val was one of those people who had him on her hit list. He was the enemy, plain and simple. Neither one of them trusted the other but then they were forced to. It was the perfect scenario for a PNR.
Not only were Val and Griffin great together, the supporting characters were witty, brave and just as loyal as they were. Then there were the sacrifices that both Val and Griffin were forced to make. Parts of this book were heart wrenching and there were moments that I was ready to scream because of what these characters were faced with. The world building, magic and mythology alone were fantastic. Yep, Renegade pretty much had it all.
I will say that there were times that I had a hard time keeping up with all the characters, but given the fact that this is the first book in a series it wasn’t a big issue. A lot of ground needed to be covered and it was accomplished very well. The character development that was created with the main players more than made up for it, honestly.
Guardian is the next book in the series and it scheduled to be released in May of 2013. From the glimpse into book 2 that readers are given at the end of Renegade I can guarantee that The Protectors Series is going to be a series I will have no problem following.
This is the start to "The Protector" series by Nancy Northcott. I enjoyed the world Ms. Northcott is creating for us. I especially love the characters. Griffin is heroic, noble, strong, and giving. Valleria is kickass and passionate with integrity and loyalty. For PNR, there is a lot of romance, so I loved it, of course! There is plenty of tension and hot vibrations between this couple and it is wonderful to see it develop. My only critique is Griffin's reasons for his separation with Valleria gets very repetitive. It is not enough to be distracting, but enough to notice.
The story of the ghouls/demon conspiracy is revealing itself very slowly. I trust that in future books we will get the whole story. The danger is allowing the paranormal/fantasy context to be a mere afterthought rather than an integral part of the narrative. Ms. Northcott hints at the danger and destruction, I'd like to see more of it!
In a Nutshell:
It is worth your effort to start this series. I am sure Nancy Northcott is not finished building the world of mages, ghouls and demons. I am looking forward to book 2, Guardian. Because of the way this book ended, I am sure we have not seen the end of Griffin and Valeria (yeah!)
This was a nice change of scenery for me with this book being about ghouls and Mages. The characters are likable and the story line if very intriguing with the right about of action and passion. Definitely recommend this one and I cannot wait for the second book to come out!
As the Collegium council's top sheriff of the southeastern United States, Valeria Banning doesn't just take her job seriously, she takes it personally. So when a notorious traitor wanted by the authorities suddenly risks his life to save hers, she has to wonder why.
HE BREAKS EVERY ONE OF THEM
As a mage, Griffin is sworn to protect innocents from dark magic, which is how he finds himself fighting side by side with the beautiful Valeria Banning. But when the council finds out the two have been working together, they're both left running for their lives-from the law, the threat of a ghoul takeover, and a possible Collegium mole.
REVIEW: This piece has originality written all over it. I was truly surprised at how different, yet how likable it is. I haven’t read any of Nancy’s stories before but this is definitely a book that has put her in my sights and on my stalking list.
The story is something no other author has come up with, or at least no one that I have seen. And I read.
A lot.
It has a paranormal aspect to it, but it isn’t something that overshadows the story. The romance is just enough and the steam that kicks up in this piece isn’t over the top. I liked the way Nancy brought these two together and found myself gripping the book for the next conflict. There were quite a few twists and turns in the plot and they are ones that I’m sure the reader will enjoy.
I have this four and a half stars out of five for a job well done.
When Griffin Dune, ex-Sheriff of the Southeastern Collegium discovers the current Sheriff, Valeria Banning, being held captive by ghouls close to his home, he's determined to rescue her and see her to safety before she can discover who he is. But there is something about Valeria that Griffin can't let go and he wants her to believe he's not the man everyone says he is. When she agrees to help him, they find themselves on the run, trying to figure out who they can trust and who the real threat them is.
I really enjoyed this story and the world Nancy Northcott has created. Valeria and Griffin were two very strong characters who would do anything for those they loved. They believed in truth and justice and would do what they needed to in order to ensure those that broke the laws paid. That's hard to do when those in positions of power abuse the rights they've been given, but Valeria and Griffin both were determined to ensure those that were abusing their power paid, even if that mean they were the ones that paid the ultimate price. And while they were determined to save their people from the ghouls and those within the Collegium who were aiding the ghouls, they found something more important...each other.
This is definitely one series that I will be following. The characters were wonderfully written and the storylines entertaining and engaging. I look forward to more from this author.
Renegade is Nancy Northcott’s first published novel and is the first in her The Protectors series. She has created an interesting world of mages, ghouls, mundanes (non-mage humans) and demons. This story blurs the boundaries between PNR and UF with its strong romance elements and fast-paced, action-oriented plot. Regardless of how it’s categorized, I just really enjoyed it!
Northcott’s writing style is clean and engaging. She nailed the first sentence and dropped us into the story right in the thick of things. We learned about the world and the people in it as we moved through the story in a way that felt natural – you will not find bloated infodump here! Northcott struck a nice balance between internal dialogue to provide character and world-building insight while sticking with the action of the story to keep things moving forward. What a fantastic debut author and series!!...
This well-written book has all you’d want to keep you reading: great plot, hot men, sexy women and a total misunderstanding which may result in the death of one of the men. A world of mages and ghouls awaits you in Renegade. Valeria Banning was nearly a match for her predecessor. Griffin Dare was a convicted murderer and ex-Sheriff of the Collegium. He knew self-defense, magic, how to make love (oh, yes he does!!) and how to do nearly anything except get his death sentence revoked. He has supporters, among them the Chief Medical Doctor of the group, now hopefully, the current Sheriff. Someone on the High Council is working with the ghouls against the mages. It has to be true because the ghouls always know when to run and many mages are being killed in the battles. Who? It will take both the exiled and current Sheriffs to figure it out and possibly then Griff can fight for his freedom again.
Great debut. I don't even read paranormals but I loved this one. Very grounded in the here and now so no new world to buy into. Very character driven. Highly recommend.
Renegade turned out to be a tough book for me to review, but not for the reasons you’re probably thinking. There were many scenes and characters within Renegade that I enjoyed and highlighting those parts would make this a fairly upbeat review. However there were just as many ideas in the book that were confusing or weren’t as well executed against the whole, leaving me with a rather subdued opinion of the overall story.
Renegade takes place in a United States where magic users, or mages, hide in plain sight in the cities and towns throughout the country. With their own regional separations known as shires, these shires have their own governments, laws, and law enforcement officers to protect the people against the outside threat of ghouls or demon kind. I have always preferred this kind of set-up within a paranormal book, with one of the main character’s having their secrets against the greater society and part of the book’s conflict is keeping that secret safe above all. Yet, within this story both of the main characters are already a part of the smaller group, with both of them having a very good understanding of how everything works. Author Nancy Northcott made a rather interesting storytelling choice to place the reader right into the middle of the action without much back story or exposition to create the world we’re experiencing. It would be like reading the first Harry Potter book and JK Rowling assumed you knew what Hogwarts or the Ministry of Magic was and never bothered explaining just because her characters know it. I was confused about the idea of the campus where many of the mages live. Was it a commune or more a city onto itself? In regards to the shire’s police force, what kind of jurisdiction could they really have in the outside world if they investigate a supernatural crime without tipping off the local police? I don’t feel it’s out of place to want a bit more explanation about these ideas, especially when they play an important role in the hero’s motivations.
Putting the paranormal aspects aside for a moment, one of the things I liked most about the book was the heroine, Valeria Banning. Val has lived through her fair share of personal tragedies, but she takes those memories and fears and turns them around to find strength in them that drives her to succeed. At the age of twenty-seven Val has attained the rank of shire reeve, or sheriff, for the entire Southeastern region. I liked how fair and level-headed Val remains even when she is confronted with rather amazing or unbelievable truths about her own government and the ghoul threat. Val is always a part of solving the problems that develop within the story rather than making stupid mistakes and waiting for the hero to save her.
On the other side of the coin, I wasn’t as taken with the hero Griffin Dare. As the previous shire reeve, Griffin was just as dedicated to his duty as Val is in hers, but when he is given information about a traitor in the government he acts in a way completely contrary to his training. He makes accusations without evidence and becomes judge, jury and executioner without the support of his superiors. His actions make him an outcast in the mage society, yet he seems to surround himself with a pretty talented group of friends who just believe him and trust him. It is amazing the resources he can gather while being a renegade where Val is stymied by the politics of the community. Where I did sympathize with the character was in his battle against the evil that was poisoning his blood from too many battles against the ghouls. For a man who only had his personal honor and his good intentions left to him, to be slowly turned from the inside out would be a horrifying reality.
It took quite a few pages for me to really get into the rhythm of the story and to have concerns about Val and Griff as they discover sinister plots against their shire. I did like the redemption arc for Griff, part of which was finding a kindred soul in Val and having her trust him even when their relationship causes her own outcast status among her friends and family. I could empathize with Val when she discovers those who she thought were closest to her may not have had her best interests at heart. The love that forms between Val and Griff at times seems forced; however I liked how the author brought another level to their intimacy that becomes important in the final resolution.
There were enough good things about this story that I would feel comfortable recommending it to readers who enjoy more of an Urban Fantasy type of book, with an ever expanding cast of characters and world building as each story unfolds. I do intend on reading the next book of the series in 2013 as I liked the character of Stefan in this story and I’ve got a better understanding of the magic and world Ms. Northcott created.
RENEGADE (The Protector Series #1) by Nancy Northcott
RENEGADE is the first storyline in Nancy Northcott’s (November 2012 release) Protector series. Renegade focuses on 27year old mage protector Valeria Banning and rogue mage Griffin Dare. As the shire reeve (sheriff) for the southeastern United States Valeria is responsible for a team of soldiers and is duty bound to kill Griffin Dare. Considered a rogue mage and a murderer, Griffin has been on the run for 6 years following the death of his former girlfriend and a fellow mage. Implicated in the deaths, Griffin has been handed a death sentence should anyone bring him home. But there is more to the deaths than the Collegium of Mages are willing to hear. Griffin’s claims of self-defense have never been heard and he is about to meet the woman who will steal his heart and possibly set him free.
Mages are a gifted species of people who source their power from the elements. But there is an enemy against their kind, who suck the power and life essence from the mage, known as ghouls. Similar to vampires, the ghouls take down their prey, both mundane and mage, to feed from their blood. Leaving behind a trail of venomous poison in their victim’s blood, those who survive will eventually become ghoul. Griffin has made it his mission to protect the mundane from attack, secretly hiding many at his house, but an attack against Griffin, will find that he is harboring a secret that could end his life sooner than later.
Griffin and Valeria meet when she is set up while on assignment. Finding herself face to face with a wanted man, Valeria is unsure whether to trust Griffin, but she will soon discover that much of what she has been told about the man has been fabricated by the Collegium of Mages.
As the storyline develops, Griffin will reveal the truth behind the charges against him, and it will be Valeria who willing places herself in danger to aid the man with whom she is falling in love. But along the way, they will discover that not all is it should be, when mundanes and human are found to be demon possessed by dark magic and have targeted Valeria and Griffin for extermination. And it will be a decidedly different Griffin who will reveal to Valeria the people he believes are behind the accusations and attempted murders of he and his friends. With both enemies and friends on the Collegium Council, Valeria soon realizes that she can no longer trust those she once called family and friends, and Griffin is no longer willing to risk Valeria’s life with his own.
The relationship between Valeria and Griffin is sexually charged and as forbidden as sin. Knowing she will be labeled a traitor for her betrayal to the Collegium, Valeria and Griffin embark on a ‘courtship on the run’ as they try and stay one step ahead of both ghouls and the mage who have been ordered to kill the couple.
Nancy Northcott introduces a series of fellow mage who are both friend and foe in the Collegium. From Dr. Stefan Harper who is the Collegium’s chief physician and Griffin’s best friend to Griffin’s second in command-Will Davis. But it is Valeria’s former guardian and Collegium Council chief Gene Blake that will place Griffin and Valeria in the most danger.
From blood magic, Dark of the Moon rituals, demons to Satanists, chaos magic and compulsion spells the Mages have their hands full when trying to decipher the enemy’s next move. But the biggest threat will come from someone in the Collegium and Griffin will have to face the ultimate test in a dual where only one mage will be left standing.
Nancy Northcott’s RENEGADE is a fast paced and fascinating look at the paranormal. There is plenty of detailed information in the storyline as it is the first novel in a series. The character development reveals a depth that allows the reader to get inside the story, and the dramatic turn to the storyline may perhaps drag a tear or two from your eye. Renegade has an amazing and eclectic group of characters and builds upon an exciting premise with many stories still to be told. An ancient struggle for power between the mage and the ghoul will force the humans they encounter to reconsider who is a friend and who is the enemy. Congratulations to Nancy Northcott on an amazing introductory novel.
Quick & Dirty: Outlaw and sheriff must decide whether to trust each other or not.
Opening Sentence: Not. Dead. Yet.
The Review:
The synopsis of this story had me intrigued and moved this book up my rather large review book pile from the bottom of the stack. Plus the cover of this book is just “Yummy”, right? Add the fact that this is the first book in a series and I started to read.
Readers are thrown into a live or die situation from the start of the book. Valeria Banning, our heroine, has been thrown into a car’s trunk after saving a Mundane woman and child from ghouls that were trying to kidnap them. We quickly find out that not only is Valeria a mage but she is duty sworn to protect the innocents aka Mundanes. She proceeds to use her wits to remove an amulet that was preventing her from using magic in the trunk and renders her weak from the amulet’s power but then must fight at a reduced capacity outnumbered.
During the ensuing battle between Valeria and the five ghouls, Valeria sends out a last wave of power on the point of her being overwhelmed. This “magical yell” is heard by Griffin Dare, our hero and renegade from the law. He charges into save the day and discovers Valeria needs help fast and only discovers afterwards that she is under orders to kill him because he is an outlaw.
The story travels along with Valeria and Dare as they try to decide how much to trust the other with their past. In Dare’s case, this includes letting Valeria into what truly happened the day he was labeled a traitor and outlawed and his desire to see justice for friends and lover killed because of a traitor. However, Valeria takes the first opportunity she can get to return home in the hopes of sorting out the truth from the fiction and her growing interest in a man that she may have to kill.
Maybe it is just me but this story was just OK. The character development was there even with the amount of characters that we eventually meet during the course of this book but no one character stands out. The story has ups and downs and twists and turns but nothing to write home about and makes writing this review tough. Environmentally this book was a bit challenged because it didn’t resonate that the Mundane didn’t get that they were living among magical people. And this is coming from someone who fell whole heartedly into the environment of books like Wake Unto Me. There just seemed to be something lacking in the execution of this world and I can’t put my finger on it.
At this point some of you might be wondering whether this is worth a purchase and read. I would say yes. This book shows promise and I want to give the author another opportunity in the Protectors’ World to wow me. Thankfully the next two books in this series will be out this year and I can then revisit this world.
Notable Scene:
Gently, keeping his fingers light on her shoulder, he used his other hand to tug hers from her eyes. That full, lush mouth and determined chin looked familiar, but he could worry about that later. He brushed tangled strands of hair aside to touch the welling around one eye gently, and she winced.
“Easy.” He probed lightly with his power.
Judging by the way she squinted, she was trying to focus, to see him. He couldn’t let her. At least the swelling and reactive tears would blur his features. “No scratches, but close your eys to the air doesn’t aggravate the burn.”
“Need healers,” she choked. “Experts.” Biting her lip, she blinked at him as though trying to clear her eyes. The suddenly widened. “You look–you’re–No!”
FTC Advisory: Forever Yours/Grand Central Publishing/Hachette Book Group provided me with a copy of Renegade. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.
Valeria Banning is the Sheriff (or shire reeve) of the Mage Council and it is her job to bring in Mage Criminals. She does her job well and holds to honor…until she meets Griffin Dare! Griff is a fugitive on the run for the past 6 years. He has eluded Mage shire reeves for all this time and after an attack he meets the current shire reeve Valeria Banning. Valeria and Griffin meet end up working together to try to prove Griffins innocence and uncover a traitor in the Mage Council. Valeria stuggles with the issues of working with a fugitive and Griffin struggles to protect Valeria whether she wants it or not.
I have to say this book gripped me from the beginning. Normally I am back and forth over simple Mage books. I usually prefer when other supernaturals are mixed in. However, Nancy Northcott managed to make this Mage world an interesting one. There is plenty of action and romance. The action scenes are descriptive enough for you to picture them in your mind while not being too detailed that you end up skipping over them. There is also suspense and mystery. It takes a while to find out who the traitor truly is and to know the full details of Griffin's past. I was happy to find very little mistakes if any in the grammar and spelling. This book was definitely worth the money to purchase and the time to read it. There are not a lot of sex scenes which is nice every once in a while, but the ones that are there are well written and feel natural. Not like the author is trying to use sex words that should not be used. Overall this book was very well written, flowed smooth, and kept me locked in. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes Mage books, paranormal books, romance books, and even those who like action or suspense books. The only complaint I truly have is the ending. It ends...that is the problem...LOL...I loved the relationship between Val and Griff so much that I was hoping there was another complete book on them. But I think the future books according to the description of # 2, will have Griff and Val in the books even though the books are about other secondary characters in this book. So while it ended it is not the end.
The beginning of the book hooked me, Valeria came across as a kick butt female and Griff a tortured hero in the guise of a bad man.
The chemistry was there and the action was moving. I liked the low personal relationship angst. Most of the turmoil was caused from outside sauces. As with any relationship not built fully on trust things were a bit tentative till they took each others measure and gained confidence.
I was their do or die until one of the two words that I really despise reared its ugly head…ess ell ewe tee. I am not a fan of the word, I think there are so many other words to use that can carry the same connotation but without the shame and derogatory weight that word carries. While it only appeared three times in the story it did pull me out of the story and made me became a lot more analytical with how the story was weighted.
Griff even though he was accused of murder had lots of support, friends and character witnesses he came across more rounded and fully fleshed. His skill set and his hero complex was discussed but never his intimate partner.
Valeria had little to no support even from those that she protected in the Collegium. When she was discussed by her work mates it wasn’t to speak to her skill set or her risk taking it was to attack her choice of intimate partner to justify calling her a derogatory slur.
Towards the mid-to end of the book Valeria’s role seemed to diminish a bit and it was all fully focused on Griff. Then the lack of relationship angst got ramped up and the last few chapters wallowed in that before we get the HEA.
I liked the story in the beginning and I wished the author hadn’t done the typical the woman gets to be spoken about derogatorily for having natural desires and the man doesn’t get painted with the same brush.
I received an ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I love, love, LOVE it when I get to read a great new well built world. This book is just that. Set in a contemporary world, it has a beautifully hidden society of mages and magic that the world's mundane (non magic using individuals) population is oblivious to. The action starts right off the bat with this book, and there is a steady of stream of it throughout.
The current Shire Reeve (Sheriff) of the Southeastern CollegiumValeria Banning, is caught by ghouls and ends up being saved by the ex-Shire Reeve of the Southeastern Collegium, Griffin Dare. This wouldn't be such a bad outcome, except for Griffin is a fugitive wanted for murder and treason. Doesn't that make a rescue awkward?
Griffin Dare was framed, but he can't prove it yet. With the help of some of his friends in the Collegium he has been hiding these past years, waiting for the opportunity to prove his innocence and out the traitor who sits on the Collegium's council. So far, that opportunity hasn't come. That is until Valeria Banning drops into his lap. Now is his chance to pull in someone who could possibly help him prove his case. He just doesn't expect to fall for her along the way. Will Griffin and Valeria survive to prove Griffin's innocence, and see if they can build on whatever sparks between them, or will the ghouls kill them first?
This was a great story that I highly recommend, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series that features one of Griffin's best friends. It's a four wine glass toast and I hope all of you enjoy this awesome new world!
I spent the last couple of days devouring RENEGADE and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I'm still mulling it all over in my head, digesting the story and characters. For me, this is a positive sign that the story has really impacted on me. I won't rehash the storyline, you can read the blurb for that.
Ms.Northcott's story was a mix of everything. What I really loved about RENEGADE was the mix of paranormal romance, solid world-building and the urban fantasy like feel to the setting/action.
RENEGADE was complex - the plot, world-building and romance were given equal weight, none was heavier than the other. I like a story that's multi-layered and this certainly gave me what I was looking for.
A quick mention about the world-building. I liked the idea of the mages & their magic, Mundanes and ghouls (as well as additional otherworldly beings) in a contemporary setting. The rules that governed the mages powers, the different skills and structure of the hidden society was intriguing. I'm interested to know more about the conflict between the mages & ghouls and I'm sure this will be dealt with in later books.
There were times the angst of both leading characters seemed repetitive or over-emphasised but this didn't detract from the reading too much, I was willing to overlook it as I was enjoying it so much.
The cast of characters was quite large and sometimes a handful to keep in my head, but I think also this was part of the appeal of the book, the complexity an added layer of depth. Again, I was enjoying it enough to overlook this.
Anyone who reads Angela Knight's Mageverse series might like to give this series a look.
GUARDIAN, Bk#2 & Stefan's story, is out in May 2013 and I'm looking forward to reading it. This series has great potential!
Okay, I suppose. The idea is different, especially with the concept of ghouls draining mages of their powers and injecting them with venom.
I can't tell if this is meant to be book two like the title suggests or book one, as there is another book published by the same author (titled Renegade) that has the same premise, so I'm a little confused by the setup.
Despite whatever order this book is in, it wasn't that hard to follow the system. It took a bit longer than I would have preferred to fully grasp how things work, but it certainly doesn't read like a sequel.
The characters were interesting, and you could feel their chemistry, but the book slowly became the Griffin Dare Show by the end, and Valeria didn't have as much of a part once he took over. It would make sense if it wasn't dual-POV, but everything centered around Griffin by the end, which I wasn't a fan of.
I'm still confused by the ending, however, and it seems the next one has nothing to do with the current characters. I don't know if Griffin and Val will have a cameo further into the series, but there were a lot of unanswered questions. Some books that leave their endings almost open-ended or with unresolved issues, it's done well enough it doesn't annoy me, but they tend to have sequels attached relating to the characters. I'm not curious at all about what happens next, certainly not enough to read the next book, but I'm a little annoyed I spent a few hours reading this to still have questions by the end.
I probably wouldn't be that annoyed if I planned to keep reading, but as there was nothing that stood out enough for me, I don't think I'll read more.
I received a free ARC and am leaving a voluntary and honest review.
RENEGADE is an engaging book with complex characters and a thrilling plot set in a world of mages and ghouls. I feared becoming lost and confused throughout the story when the first scene pretty much drops you right into the action but with such concise and detailed writing explaining the world as I went along at a steady pace I was able to easily get the hang of everything. The ongoing conflict between mages and ghouls was fascinating. I was especially intrigued by the way the ghouls attack and infect others with venom, and I am looking forward to learning more about these shockingly intelligent creatures in other books.
While the conflict between the mages and ghouls would have been great to read about in itself, the growing trust and bond between Griffin and Valeria was just as enticing and enjoyable. Both Griffin and Valeria worked so well together even from their first encounter as enemies. Both were equally heroic and I admired how protective they were of other mages and non-mages even when it risked their own livelihood. Griffin is almost recklessly heroic in his attempts to get his name cleared by rescuing the very person hunting him. I loved Griffin from the start with the way he patiently takes care of Valeria and gets her to understand his situation.
RENEGADE is a wonderful thriller mixed with a little mystery, a touch of magic, and a dash of a steamy romance. I am looking forward to what happens next in The Protectors Series. The next book, GUARDIAN is scheduled to be released in May of 2013.
Reviewer: Aubrey Source: NetGalley Aubrey's review was first posted at Romancing the Book's blog.
I really liked this book. It was a lot different than the typical paranormal romance out right now. The writing was witty and fast paced. The banter back and forth between the main characters was interesting and kept me wanting more. I enjoyed the fact that the main characters of Griffin and Val hated each other but had a strong attraction. I really rooted for them from the beginning.
The world build by Nancy Northcott is believable and new. I really loved reading a paranormal romance that was not centered around vampires or werewolves. Val is supposed to find Griffin and bring him in alive or dead for crimes he has committed. Val is a Shire Reeve and needs to protect the humans from ghouls. She is a mage that has fought against ghouls for years. Griffin has been on the run for the suspected killing of mages (mages are non-humans that have a lot of power and magic).
Throughout the novel you see a progression of a romance happening between Val and Griffin. They both have to find themselves in a way. They both have to let go of resentments towards the other. Their romance is both sweet, hot and intense at the same time. I cannot wait to read more from this author and the next novel in the series.
This is your typical fantasy novel. We have of course the good guys (Valeria Banning), the bad guys (the Ghouls and an insider) and the 'maybe' guy Griffin Dare, a mage who has been on the run from an accusation of murder for 6 years.
Ms Northcott does what few authors dare to do and even less authors get away with, and that is to dump the reader directly into the authors world with no explanation of what to expect.
These two meet when Griff defies common sense and saves Val at the expense of his own life. Ghouls abound everywhere at every moment and the reader can be left gasping at the pacing of this novel. It was difficult for me to see just how Griffin and Valeria were gong to have any sort of private relationship with so much action going on, but of course they did. As unbelievable as it was yes they did manage.
The characters are interestingly drawn but I did not really 'believe' the story itself. The romance felt too contrived, forced. The action was interesting and the sub- plot kept my attention and the secondary players seemed more interesting to me than the main players.
It will keep you engaged but I don't think it will be making you feel like you just HAVE to keep reading.
Note around 150 pages in: Sudden introduction of various types of demons. Also, scrying seems to develop new abilities as we go. Finally finished. Once it starts moving, it's action packed. This story has the irritating thing where a lack of contraception is a proxy for trust. Unfortunately, he has what could be a blood borne issue, which he doesn't disclose beforehand...
Valeria is a mage set on saving others. She gets in a tight spot and her last ditch call for help brings infamous Griffin Dare to her rescue. He has been hiding for 6 years due to the tales being spread about him. He knows the truth but was unable to prove it. She is his 2nd chance.
I enjoyed the relationship between these two. How it developed and how two loaners learn to work as a team. He is driven to protect others to his detriment. She forces him to see there are others out there that will not tolerate him sacrificing himself.
So many twists and turns that kept me engaged until the very end.
This is a book 2, but I feel I successfully read it without having read book 1.
I received an advanced copy of this story and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
When it seems like all is against you and you find yourself in more danger than you can handle, any helping hand is seen as miraculous. But after the danger passes, will that same hand be one you want to hold on to? For Valeria, relying on the traitorous fugitive Grif may be the most deadly action she takes. Can he prove to her that he is innocent of the crimes attributed to him? Can the passion that strikes between them be trusted to be truthful? Will she challenge his perceptions to see reason and emotion as separate?
Love stories are abundant in all types of literary genres. But none give more license for dramatic surprises than a steamy romance surrounded by action, adventure, and magic. Nothcott’s Renegade Mage blends hot passion, betrayal, and terror into a satisfying page turner. Griffin and Valeria are mages succumbing to a tumultuous love affair while being hunted by traitors and ghouls. For those who enjoy passionate tales of romance and thrills, Renegade Mage engages you from the first sentence. You will be hooked.
Well, I finished it, so that's saying something as I'm currently in the middle of a reading slump. Can't say I love-loved it or anything, but it was diverting and fun, with pretty non-stop action and plot twists and turns. Our hero and heroine could never know who to trust, including each other. There were a few moments when I did get a little teary, and I liked the interesting mythology, though it seemed to get a little too technical near the middle, with some info dumps courtesy of Will.
This book was an exercise in both patience and endurance. It was far too long; scenes dragged, dialogue rambled, the pace was slllllooow. Why didn't the editor cut a quarter of this book? It ended with my LEAST favorite trope, "Boohoo, I'm no good for you. Boohoo, I'm leaving you for your own good." She was an idiot to take him back. He was an idiot for all the stupid shit he did. They deserve each other, and that's not a compliment.
Dang, I had high hopes for this but it didn't work for me. Lots of effort was put into the world building and the magic system was well thought out. Yet there was something irritatingly perfect about both Val and Griff that stopped me from really caring about either of them. Also... did I read correctly or does our hero wear denim cutoffs early on?! Far too reminiscent of Tobias Funke for me.
Another great story in this series that moved right along. Griff is on the run branded a traitor. Val is a top cop who is nearly taken out ghouls, Griff rescues her. Griff and his friends believe there is a traitor among the Mage Shire but convincing Val is not easy. Unfortunately, they end up on the run together and falling in love was not planned. Hopefully, they make it out alive!
I departed from my usual subgenres to read this fantasy adventure set in Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp. I'm glad I did. The world is fascinating, and the characters are compelling. A review will be posted at Just Janga next week.
This ia an amazing story I loved it from start to finish so well written and Griff is such an amazing hero and so so who Val needed. This story is filled with adventure and passion as Griff and Val fight ghouls and dark magic. I highly recomend this book it has given me hours of reading pleasure
