The Autobiography of Malcolm X

Several years ago I decided to make the reading of The Autobiography of Malcolm X mandatory for my high school Honor's English students (I had read the book when it was first released). I taught in an "urban" Maryland public school, and most of the students, although considered honor's, were void of deeper literary exposure. My decision to "teach Malcolm X" was not looked upon well by the administration, but after thorough student led discussions and tying the story to their personal journey, the book was relished, applauded and appreciated by the students and their parents. I still hold this book in highest regard and rank it as one of the greatest stories ever told.

I teach this book in ENG 101 at a community college. It often resonates with students and makes them feel differently about the world. Go, you--for teaching a book you believed in when the higher ups were not excited about it.

I hope all teachers who use this book teach it in the context of doing personal research. I am so troubled by never finding evidence that readers who are moved, as I was, by Malcolm X's insights and words, have failed to look deeper into what Malcolm actually believed. He certainly made some inspiring speeches, but the surface words are not the only thing that should be studied. They should be a jumping off place for us to dig deeper into the source of his material.
Mr. Beckett, I know that you are a fan of Malcolm X, so I have a gift for you. This is truly what it is. It is an extensive bibliography of books for the study of his life. It is an e-book, and it is yours, for free. If you know anyone else in your life, colleagues, students, administrators, friends, acquaintances, etc. who would appreciate this, I'd encourage you to share it with her, or him, as well. Enjoy!
