“Cerebral” is often, in the SFF community, a short-hand for “written by China Miéville”. Probably because he has a PhD, but it doesn’t mean his books are good. The Scar’s excellent, but I’ve found everything else he’s read either a slog or unreadable.

Mieville is my favourite author. Only reason I bought this book.
I got this book as a gift, so in honor of that, I promised myself that I'd finish it. Oy. I really struggled doing so - I've never had to look up so many words, words used for dramatic or profound purposes that do nothing but pull the reader out of the story in order to use the dictionary. For me, it changed to readable around page 200, but when I finished and put it down, my only emotion was happiness that it was over
I struggled first 20 pages, then it gave everyone names and the quick scene and POV changes become more medium scene and POV changes. If you feel up to, skip the first 20 pages and have another go in case you end up liking it after that!
