This is great book!
A BOOK FOR EVERYBODY
Very quick to read so if you are interested on it.
You'll find out that you'd read it in no time.
Also, it helps that it's a page turner, since the story has many elements to keep you hooked to it.
I hate to classify books for some specific age, since I think that books shouldn't have any age or genre.
Books should be read by men or women at any age and they should be as good as effective.
However, one can't deny that the author made this story thinking in kids and/or early teenagers, but not matter that, I think that readers of any age can enjoy this story with the same impact and purpose.
As C.S. Lewis said (and I am quoting not necessarily with the exact words) "that any children's story that it can't be enjoy by adults, it's a bad children's story".
NOT SO SIMPLE AS GOOD OR BAD
For readers who are looking for stories where there aren't good people or bad people but just people, this is your book.
This story will provoke you many moods and states, you will smile at some moment, you will hate at other, you will cry in yet another.
And all that it's okay.
I think that this book should be to be read at some moment in your lives.
Please, don't let that those labels of "children", etc... in the genres of the book keep you away of the book, not matter how young or how old you are.
If you want to read this book, please do, you won't regret it.
It's about something important. About something needed to be read.

Good points regarding the audience, Alejandro. And whether we like it or not (or in my case, whether others like it or not), there is a child in all of us!

Great review, funny that I used that same quote when reviewing Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book. This is a very worthwhile read.
Laura wrote: "Correction, the quote I used for Coraline. But a great quote nonetheless."Great indeed! :) Thanks a lot for your comments!
I'm so intrigued by this book! It popped up in my recommendations ''because I shelved The Night Circus.'' I trust your ratings so I'll think about reading it! Nice review. :)

Sometimes it's odd the options that popped up acording to certain book that you read.
However, since I want to read "The Night Circus" due your review about it, so I think that it's only fair that you'd want to read "A Monster Calls" due my review ;) :P
I hope we both would enjoy as much the other book as we did (that sentence did the expected sense? I hope so!)
Anyway, I appreciate a lot your kind comments!

Alejandro, great review -- as always -- and this sounds like such a great book. But is it too scary for a Big Chicken? Bwak! Bwak! Bwak!
Ivonne wrote: "Alejandro, great review -- as always -- and this sounds like such a great book. But is it too scary for a Big Chicken? Bwak! Bwak! Bwak!"Hi, Ivonne! Well, while it still keeps in the area of a children's story, I can't say that it's not quite scary at several times and with an ending hard to assimilate. The book is absolutely great but I couldn't be certain if it's the kind of book for your due the horror elements into it.

Well, if it's a children's book, I should be OK, right?

Well, if you later have nightmare, don't say that I didn't warned you ;)
So true what you say that a good story is good regardless of what age it may be geared at. I've read many lovely children's books that I thought were great. A good story is good no matter what. This book was extremely moving. I say this book has no age. It's the kind of book that is going to touch each reader on a different level based on the reader's life experiences. Everyone is going to take away something different from it.

True words, Licha!
A good story has no age ;)

It's veeeery short, too, so you can read it in one sitting. That way, even if you are disappointed, you haven't wasted much time. But I do think you'll like it. I think it's much too dark for children, though.
Ah yes!! I think the fact that the book featured people as people, and not classified as bad or good, is another reason why I loved it so much. Good review btw! :)

I'm so glad you like this! I really enjoyed the tales the monster told and the illustrations that just tied it all together. A wonderful book overall :)
Great review Ale! And I do agree with you about the labels issue. And yes, we have C.S. Lewis on our side to back up our statements. :P
I read this book 2 years ago. It's wonderful, it touches the soul.

Thanks for the review. I've looked at this and past over because of the age tag. You made a great point (great C.S. Lewis quote too).
Great review! This was such an amazingly memorable, moving book! I'm very curious how the movie will be...

Yes, the cover is awesome and I am truly glad that loved the book too! :D
I also agree with our opinion:) While I read this book, I thought about meaning of monster. This book give us some lessons that "monster isn't only bad thing". Meeting monster, Conor could learn how to express his inner mind.and also by coming monster, he could let his mother go more easily. Not only Conor, also in our mind, monster exist. But what i want to say is that by reading this book, don't be afriad to face "my monster".
I totally agree with you. I was struck with the story which is not simple as good or bad, as you said. This book give various lessons to everyone regardless of age. I think after I became a adult and when I read this book again, I could feel another emotion. Thank you for your great review.
Great review!! I agree with you. When I read this book I knew the human's two minds like inner minds and outer minds. Also, I could understand why the monster told the three stories. So, I want to say , Don't avoid your inner minds. Face your inner minds.
Everyone could think something wicked in other side of their mind. Most people do not want to reveal that side and it's hard for children as well as adults. Conor just avoided and did like others. Actually he wanted to be free of what makes him feel lonely. Even if it takes something precious of him. As you mentioned, it's not matter how young or how old I am. It's about something important. This book would bring important truth in your life.
