1) A)What kinds of applications are described here?

The type of applications being described is known as productivity applications. This includes
web cameras, calendar, email, contact lists. Management applications are also describes here and
those would be the applications that are used for inventory, documentation, security, marketing,
and sales. These applications support the entire business.

b) What business functions do they support?

Each application has part that helps to move the business forward. Each application also allows
the business to work at a pace that is good for itself, giving it the ability to speed up and slow
down as needed. Apps are constantly updated. These updates are done to correct soft/hardware
issues, make improvements and fix bugs, allowing for that app to work more efficiently. The
updates also allow for fixed security vulnerabilities and could possibility add new features.

4) a) Identify the problems that businesses in this case study solved by using mobile digital
devices.
Before using mobile digital devices McClendon’s Select use to handwrite orders in whiteboard.
This process took up a lot of time, costed a lot of money and was prone to many errors. Going
digital also allowed McClendon’s Select to cut the time it take to load the delivery trucks. Before
going digital it took them 30 to 45 minutes to load the trucks. Now they are able to generate a
report that tells them where every box goes on the truck through the iPads.

For example, before going digital the PepsiCo drivers and merchandisers started each day by
picking up printed schedules that had order quantities and tasks that was to be done at each
outlet. After this schedule was picked up it was difficult to accommodate last minute changes in
orders because communication with the drivers while they were on the road was difficult.

Overall, after these companies started using mobile digital devices they were able to
communicate and observe items and well as their workers even if they were at a different site.
This change also gave instant access to help manage the business from a small family owned
organic farm to a large beverage company.

4)b) What kinds of businesses are most likely to benefit from equipping their employees
with mobile digital devices such as iPhones and iPads?

There is a large variety of businesses that would benefit from equipping their employees with
mobile digital devices. No matter what the size of the business communication is a must. Having
these mobile digital devices allow said business to communicate with its workers, deliverers,
customers, as well as manufacturers.

In addition to this businesses that deliver or is transportation based will have access to the
devices Global Positioning System (GPS). This in itself can give a more secure feeling to the
company. If shipment or even a worker gets lost/stolen/kidnapped there is a possible way to track
them. From a business position having GPS also will allow the business to track the amount of
travel each truck or deliverer does.
Businesses that does long distance business will also benefit from this. If there is a problem at
the home base or if they are away from home base and leave something having digital copies of
everything allows for no time to be wasted.

From an everyday perspective banks and financial institutions use mobile devices to make things
easier for their customers. A lot of banks offer mobile banking. Mobile banking allows
customers to have access to their account without having to be on a desktop/laptop or going into
a local bank. It allows the customer to check bank balances, pay bills, transfer funds, monitor
pending transactions, and some even allow you to “freeze” and “unfreeze” your card in case you
misplace it.

Hospitals and medical offices would also benefit from equipping employees with mobile digital
devices. Numerous offices have taken this step. They have what is called patient kiosks. This
allows patients to sign in, update records, record changes, etc. This allows the front desk staff to
do other administrative things while patients check in but, also makes sure everyone is checked
up and patient files are up to date.
