Case Study Questions
Case Study (I): MIS in Your Pocket (Pages 32-33)
1. What kinds of applications are described here? What business functions do they
support? How do they improve operational efficiency and decision making?
o The applications described in the case have something in common. They are all mobile
digital applications that are used in different business functions, especially BlackBerry
and iPhone. Applications used in business, according to the case, vary from web
browser, telephone and camera to e-mail messaging and special software for customer
relations management (CRM).
o The mobile digital applications allow businesses to stay connected around the clock to
staff members and customers. They also allow secure mobile access from any locations
in the world to their business information. They save time and effort and maintain
accuracy and in time service.
2. Identify the problems that businesses in this case study solved by using mobile digital
devices.
o The mobile digital devices in this case solved the problem of Doylestown hospital with
360 physicians who need to stay in touch with the hospital around the clock especially
with the staff members and the patients and to be updated about their patients'
information any time a day.
o They also solved the problem of D.W. Morgan, the supply chain and transportation
company that needs to deliver raw materials and supplies to JIT retailers and
manufacturers shortly before they are needed. The company developed a special
application (ChainLinq mobile application) for its 30 drivers that updates shipment
information, collects signatures, and provides global positioning system (GPS)
locations for each single box it delivers. Thus, the company could save time and effort
and maintain accuracy and in-time service.
3. What kinds of businesses are most likely to benefit from equipping their employees
with mobile digital devices such as iPhones and BlackBerrys?
o Doylestown Hospital is most likely to benefit from equipping the physicians with
mobile digital devices such as iPhones and BlackBerrys to be in touch with them around
the clock.
o Aedas Sport will also benefit from equipping designers and architects with digital
mobile phones to take pictures of designs, models, and construction sites.
4. D.W. Morgan's CEO has stated, "The iPhone is not a game changer, it's an industry
changer. It changes the way that you can interact with your customers (and) with
your suppliers." Discuss the implications of this statement.
o The CEO indicates that the iPhone is a state-of-the-art not only in entertainment but
in business as well. It helps business people create more customer satisfaction,
customer intimacy, and perfect customer relations management. It also maintains
good communication with suppliers through accurate and in-time services.
