"I love you." Carmy says it like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. Like he didn’t just upend her entire life with three words. His crystal blue eyes sear into her soul, cataloguing the wave of emotions sweeping across her expression. Like a switch turned on, Sydney finally sees the years of yearning etched on his face, his walls finally torn down, his heart splayed out for her. But her overwhelming fears squeeze the vice around her own heart and manage to obliterate her momentary burst of joy. "No…that’s−no, you don’t." Carmy’s expression softens. No one understands her and her panic quite like him. If Sydney didn’t know him so well, she’d have missed the imperceptible twitch of his lips. "You’re scared, Syd. I get it." She scoffs at his self-assurance, "Oh, yeah? What am I scared of?" "You’re afraid that if we went for it, we’d lose it." Bingo! "You’re scared we’d ruin our friendship." She hasn’t moved an inch, but there’s an entire film playing out across her features. He has to push past her comfort zone. If he doesn’t, they’ll never know what could have been, forever stuck in this limbo. He waits, and waits, and waits some more. He’ll wait forever if he has to. Her voice cracks, tears reaching her throat, "What if this is all we’re ever meant to be? What if it’s good because we never had time to get sick of each other?” He tilts his head to the side, looking at her like he would a misbehaving child, "Syd, we spend more time with each other than we do with our actual families. If I was gonna get sick of you, it would have happened already. I’ll never get sick of you. I’ll never have enough of you. There’s no one who know me better than you and there’s no one who knows you better than me. And I’ll forever kick myself for all the time I wasted not telling you how I feel." His eyes plead with her. "Take the leap with me, Syd. Please, jump." And she does. Right into his arms.
