Carmy was listening to the shaking of the box in her hands more than what she was actually saying.
“So, that’s why I’m saying, like, who cares right? Like, why go traditional? We can do whatever we want,” Sydney was standing so close to him, they were basically touching from shoulder to wrist. Carmy watched as she looked down at the carton of Milk Duds in her hand, shaking out a handful onto her palm. “And I think chaos is good. But in this specific context, not like in general.”
“Right,” he nodded. “That your second box?”
“Hm?” She looked to him distractedly, chewing on the massive ball of chocolate in her mouth. “Dunno? You want?”
“Nah, I’m good. Just curious. You really like those, huh?” He tilted his head.
“They’re good,” Sydney nodded, scooping another handful into her mouth. “But what do you think? Chaos menu?”
“Mm. Yeah, I like that,” he agreed, turning back to the piece of paper in front of them. He pointed at the list of menu items they’d crossed off, finger scrolling down the list. “We keep the scallop.”
“It’s not ready yet,” Sydney refuted.
“We work on it.” He looked back over at her. “You wanna come over on Sunday? Finish this up?”
Sydney raised her eyebrows. “You’re not busy?”
“I’m good if you are.”
Sydney nodded. “I’m good.”
“Kay, see you there.” He smiled back, nudging her shoulder with his. Sydney just chuckled quietly, shaking even more candy onto her hand.
“Exciting,” she replied sarcastically.

“Carm? Amazon!” Claire’s voice carried in from the living room. He finished yanking his shirt over his head to push through the bedroom door, finding his girlfriend closing the front door with a box in her hands.
“You answering the door like that?” He asked around a confused smile as he walked over to take the box from her, already on his way to the kitchen.
Claire shrugged, following along. She was standing around in the clothes she slept in—just a big shirt and her underwear. Carmy, on the other hand, was already dressed for the day. No time to waste.
“No one around to watch,” Claire replied casually, pulling a chair out from his kitchen table and taking a seat. “What’s that?”
“Nothing, just something for a friend.” He said, laying the box on the island and pulling a drawer open for a knife. “What’re you doing today?”
Claire’s brow wrinkled. “You don’t want to hang out?”
“I told you. Syd’s coming over to work on menu?” He pulled the boxes tabs back and set the knife on the table. “She’s punctual as fuck. Probably gonna be here in like an hour.”
“I thought you guys were done with that,” Claire makes a face, combing her fingers through a lock of her hair. “You’ve been open for a while.”
“Yeah, but stuff is happening. We gotta turn it around.” He crossed his arms and leaned back against the island. “Set menu. Lower costs.”
“Responsible as fuck,” Claire commented mildly.
“Responsible as fuck,” he echoed with a nod.
“Kay, well, I gotta go.” Claire stood back up, turning towards the bedroom. “I’m on call, but you can still text me later.”
“Cool,” he nodded back, turning to the package again. “Let me know when you get back to your place?”
“Uh huh!” Claire’s voice carried through the apartment, already distant. Carmy unpackaged the box, two neat little rows of Milk Duds finding a home in the bottom cabinet of the island.

“I’m going!” Claire swung back, finding Carmen opening the window in the kitchen, she shot him a funny look, her handbag resting heavy on her shoulder, as she went to meet up with him before she left. “What’re you doing?”
“Smells like a fucking ashtray,” Carmy replied as if he hadn’t been smoking in the kitchen that morning.
“Yeah? Maybe you should quit,” Claire grinned teasingly, leaning in for a kiss. “See ya?”
“Mm. I’ll text you,” he nodded, offering her a quick press of his lips before following her to the door.
“You better,” she shot him a teasing look over her shoulder, stepping into her work shoes just as someone knocked on the other side of the front door. “It’s your friend.” She guessed correctly.
Sydney was standing at the other side of the door, tote bag bulging with groceries, her green parka swallowing up most of her body. Her eyes widened with pleasant surprise when she found Claire in front of her, stepping forward to greet her automatically.
“Claire! Hey! Whoa, it’s been a while,” Sydney smiled softly. “Leaving already?”
“Yeah. On call,” Claire shrugged casually. “Nice seeing you, though. Your dad…?”
“He’s okay,” Sydney nodded back, eyes flickering to Carmy. “Hey, dude.”
“‘Sup?” Carmy smiled genuinely, mentally reminding himself to chill the fuck out. “It’s cold?”
“Fucking freezing,” Sydney nodded back, her and Claire sidestepping each other so Sydney could make it into the hall. “Got thoughts on that scallop.”
Carmy rolled his eyes affectionately. “Course you do.” Turning back to the door, he offered Claire a quick wink. “I’ll see ya?”
“Bye,” she nodded back, walking away as he finally shut the door.
