straight up it should be illegal for a physical storefront not to accept physical currency, or for restaurants not to provide physical menus
I'm assuming the above is a normie opinion (as it should be) so i do wanna go a tiny step further and explicitly state any laundromat that requires digital payment should be burned to the fucking ground
if a business cooerces its customers to download an app, i should legally be allowed to set both the business and its board of directors on fire
The assumption that every single business, or service, is owed your personal data, and should be able to track you and mercilessly spam you and monetise the ability to sell off your contact details and so on it’s absolutely deranged.
I have flashlights that are borderline unusable because, while the hardware is fine, the company that made them (hello OLight!) demands that you install and login to the storefront before you can access the configuration software.
But they don’t actively maintain the software or provide any of the new utilities that they promise. They are mostly using it as a way to turn off functional hardware to try and force you to upgrade.
We are living in a society where you can pay for something and the manufacturer can turn it off because they’ve decided that you’ve owned it too long .
I’ve just had to warn my family not to buy electronic door locks because the chances are, if they are Internet connected they will be disabled once the company that owns them has decided that they’re not making enough money charging you a monthly fee to open your own front door.
This is part of an ongoing trend to turn money into something that is no longer usable by everybody .
The eventual aim is to be able to pay people company scrip: If you lose your job, or badmouth the company, or disagree with the dictator, they severely curtail what you are allowed to buy, and from who.
And at that point, you have to pick sides – do you want to be able to have drinking water from Coca-Cola, or Pepsi, and whose package allows you to buy Doritos, and use your smart oven to cook food? Because it won’t turn on unless you use the app to scan the appropriate barcode from the company who now owns your ability to eat drink, heat your home, and wear clothes from brands that they approve.
And if you think that Bezos wouldn’t do that or run his own ghetto where employees have to use Amazon brands and be paid in Amazon money… You haven’t been paying attention to what he’s been building lately.

When ur friends sign is cancer
mom says my old cat Artemis died this morning. I'm finding it difficult to feel strongly about it. She was something like 19 years old. I hadn't yet visited for Christmas this year so it seems like I should feel worse for not getting to say goodbye. But I don't know, it's like I'm more worried about how my mom feels at this point, because when she started sleeping in the guest bedroom upstairs Artemis became her little companion always reminding her of bedtime. They had a shared desire to escape the dog and lay in bed all day watching murder mysteries. When I tried convincing my parents to move to Massachusetts Artemis' ability to make the trip was a big reason she wasn't ready to move yet.
Artemis and Athena were a pair of kittens I got from a friend in middle school; they were the daughters of a cat named Telephone who was perpetually pregnant, and they were in her very last litter. She was actually pregnant again after that but they aborted all the babies. When we got them they were crawling with fleas and my mom scrubbed them in the sink for an hour till the fleas were all gone. I named them after goddesses because we had just finished a Greek mythology unit in my English class. And honestly for the first few days I think I forgot which one was which. Athena ended up being bigger, more active, doglike. She would shed stiff white fur everywhere when you pet her, and come running when you called. She liked to sit on top of the cat tree with her arms straight out. If you held out your hand she'd stand up on her back legs to bonk her head into it. She was always the more active cat, and the fatter one. She died shortly after I moved to Boston in 2017. She had hurt her paw somehow and it was swollen. My parents took her to the vet and ended up scheduling euthanasia. I was so angry because I assumed my parents just didn't want to pay the bill to fix her paw. In a Facetime with my dad to say goodbye to her he explained that the vet found massive organ failure. She wasn't fat, she had ascites, and she had probably been in pain for years. We cried and cried as he filmed himself petting her. Artemis was smaller, stealthier, and so soft. But you pet her on her terms and she would shrink away if she didn't want it. She loved to run ahead of you and flop down for belly rubs, and she loved to do this especially if you were going upstairs. She'd race you there and flop on the top step. And a lot of cats like following you into the toilet but she's the only one I've known to literally hop up into your lap while you were there. Early on she learned how to throw her own toys for herself; one of her favorites was a rubber chicken she'd fling about 3 feet into the air and chase. A very talented little cat. The last time I saw her she was all bones, a little old lady who imposed her own bedtime schedule on my mom, and got as many churus as she wanted. And so soft.

I live by the motto, “if you can’t buy what you want, make it.” And this motto came to life recently in the form of a floral mosaic dining table for my back deck.
Our deck table had been showing its age already when the wind caught the umbrella and cracked it. I wanted to replace it with a mosaic table because I’d been enjoying that art form recently. But I couldn’t get one the size I wanted so I got creative.
I spent a few weeks looking for tile and figuring out a very loose design concept. I started by picking a limited set of tile shapes and a color palette.
Once the tiles arrived I had a piece of particle board cut to size for the base and I experimented with different motifs until I settled on a selection of floral shapes that gave me plenty of variety to fill space without locking me into one repeating pattern.
And then I was off! I basically doodled my way around the table, attaching tiles with Weld Bond (I went through 4 full bottles!) and rocking out to the K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack.
Once the florals were done it was time for the background…
Over 3,800 1cm glass tiles make up the not-design part of the design. It went pretty quickly though because I just had to fill the space, leaving room for grout.
Once I had the tile done, my husband assisted with disassembly and reassembly. We used the legs off the original table for this one (waste not).
One huge bucket of black grout later…
She is finished.
I enjoyed making it and just looking at it makes me so happy - I can’t wait for all the dinners we’ll have around this table 🌼❤️
This is the best idea of all time

The idea of listening to no black music is bizarre to me. Even if it's not rap like no earth wind and fire? No reggae? No moonstomp? No ska? No classic jazz? No R and B? No disco??? No skindred? No jungle? No even like metal bands with a few black members? No gospel? Not even stuff like alors en dance? No blues music? No mo town? No jazz of any kind? No big band? No soul music? Not even a little James Brown?
not even yola or tanner adell or brittney spencer or tracy chapman or india.arie or chapel hart or the carolina chocolate drops or rhiannon giddens????
