Buddie | G | 10k | one shot

“You don’t understand, I have to get home to my son.” She gives him a sympathetic smile, and Eddie has to restrain himself from slamming his fists on the desk. He clenches his fists at his side instead, his chest still heaving from sprinting across the airport. “Surely you can make an exception for this man who is serving our country,” a voice says from beside him, friendly and polite. Eddie watches a bright smile spread across the other man’s face, and he notices that he seems to be completely collected despite that fact that he was sprinting as fast as Eddie was just moments ago. “I’m sorry, sir, there’s nothing I can do.” She looks at Eddie, a flash of pity crossing over her face. “And thank you for your service.” - or: Eddie misses his flight home to his son on Christmas Eve, and just so happens to get stuck with the handsome man who sprinted across the airport with him.

hiatus codas: 1x05 point of origin

the thing buck hadn’t anticipated about the job is how one moment can seem to change everything.

they get called to a wedding, and sixteen people are pronounced dead at the scene with more bodies pulled from the rubble every moment. sixteen people who’d woken up joyful, hopeful, who’d come together to celebrate the merging of two lives and found theirs ended instead.

and buck knows the floor didn’t just collapse on its own, that the day’s tragedy is the result of any number of individual choices that built and stacked, but—ultimately, the difference between life and death was a single moment. the space between two heartbeats, two breaths. the floor vanished mid-sentence, between one word and the next.

patricia clark does not vanish in a single moment, but abby goes to sleep with her mother in the next room and wakes up to find her gone.

even the man in the car wash—a whole sequence of events must occur for him to get tangled up in the brush, but there is a moment in which he goes from being free to not.

it’s the kind of moment you remember for a lifetime, even when the things leading up to it are banal and forgettable: the moment the floor collapses. the moment reality rearranges itself around you, however minutely.

buck has had a lot of these moments. the moment he decided to leave home, and the moment he went to peru. the moment he stepped through the LA fire academy, and the moment he realised he could no more extricate himself from the 118 without leaving a trace than he could untie the proverbial gordian knot. he’s part of something now, something bigger than himself. he’s part of a team that would feel it if he left.

and then there’s abby. that’s a moment buck will never be able to pin down—the shift between abby, the voice on the phone, and abby, the woman he spent all day with. the woman he can’t stop thinking about.

there’s a part of him that itches under the weight of it all, under the layers upon layers of connections keeping him tied to LA. but it’s a good weight, he thinks. the kind you tie to a helium balloon to keep it from floating away.

it’s a kind of weight he’s never felt before.

but he finds that he quite likes it.

fic recs: archive edition 11

Merry December everyone, I hope a good month lies ahead and wish the least amount of stress possible for everyone! We're slowly inching towards the end of the summer between S4 and S5, which makes me very excited because there are some good fics up ahead for the autumn of 5A!

As always, previous posts in this series can be found here!

always a space in my heart (for you) by @alasse9 While in the SEALs training, Buck meets Eddie at a special forces conference, and they stay friends and penpals through the years that follow, having each other's backs long before they both end up in LA. 28.9k words, rated T

I have not wanted syllables by iphigenias (@oatflatwhite) Five times Buck and Eddie don't say I love you out loud, and one time they do. Established relationship softness! 3.4k words, rated M

The Truth of Love (Amas Veritas) by allyasavedtheday (@littlespoonevan) When Buck was young, he cast a spell to make sure the person he'd fall in love would need to possess such a weird combination of traits that they don't exist. But weird things start happening when he meets the detective investigating Maddie's husband's disappearance. Do I have a special love for the book Practical Magic? Maybe. That won't stop me from recommending this AU regardless of whether you've read the book or seen the film or not! 20.4k words, rated T

keep your eyes on the road by iriswests (@fcntasmas) Glimpses into Buck and Eddie's relationship through scenes happening when they stop at a traffic light. 3.9k words, rated M

what you're looking for has been here the whole time by lecornergirl (@clusterbuck) In which Buck comes to the logical conclusion that the reason Eddie keeps looking annoyed when he talks about Taylor or looks longingly at him and Taylor together is because Eddie is in love with Taylor. I still crack up every time I think about this concept! 1.7k words, rated T

I haven't had real free time to write in like 10 months, but now i almost do, and i forgot i was writing this in february and idk if i'll ever finish it so here's what i have of it so far secondary title is "eddie pines harder than a douglas fir"

It happens quickly. That’s what scares Eddie the most.

One minute he’s in his truck, Chris in the backseat, all their worldly possessions secured in the bed, whizzing past a “Welcome to California!” sign in search of something better than what they left in the rearview mirror.

He blinks, and he’s in the locker room of Station 118, fresh out of the academy, being greeted by smiling faces and one blonde haired, blue eyed sneer.

He blinks again, the sneer has softened into an easy grin, and he and Buck work together like they were built for it, like their lives were always going to bring them to a place where they would be running into smoldering, crumbling buildings side by side. Buck drives him and Chris home after the earthquake, and Eddie struggles to remember the last time anything felt this easy.

Blink

Shannon is back. Any ease he found evaporates, and the walls he built around his feelings for her come crumbling down in her wake.

Blink

He’s in the back of an ambulance feeling her pulse stop under his fingertips.

Blink

He’s off probation, surrounded by friends and family applauding his accomplishment. He’s grinning on the outside, but inside he’s still a mess of grief and guilt. He wants to be as proud of himself as his parents claim they are, wants to stop seeing Shannon on the gurney every time he closes his eyes, wants to be happy, wants peace, wants, wants, wants —

Buck’s laugh erupts from across the room, still loud and free flowing despite the month he’s had, and Eddie wants so hard it almost takes him out at the knees. It’s like time stops, the flurry of actions and emotions constantly trying to engulf him comes to a brief standstill, and as the sound of Buck’s joy washes over him, he feels like he can breathe for the first time in months. Everything seems clearer, Buck’s smile is making the room even brighter, and Eddie thinks he might—

No. It’s too soon. Way too soon.

Isn’t it?

@devirnis @eddiebabygirldiaz @rewritetheending @wildlife4life @lover-of-mine @daffi-990 all tagged me for fuck it Friday and I wasn't going to post anything but then as I climbed into bed the opening of a buddie supernatural au popped into my head and then tapped it's way into a google doc. I'm not actually going to write a full fic for this (probably) but sharing this little scrap feels in the nature of this tag game. It's not even Friday anymore so not going to tag anyone unless you, dear reader, see this and feel compelled to share something kicking around in a document somewhere. Fuck it! It's always Friday somewhere (if you forget how days work)! Uhhh canon typical violence warning....

Eddie isn’t a stranger to being called a miracle. A miracle baby, he was; born almost two months early when a ghoul out for revenge had tried to snack on Helena’s gray matter. Neither of them should have survived it, but a few weeks later she brought her little bundle of joy home from the hospital, wailing real loud from his big strong lungs. "It was a miracle you were there, mijo," his father told him when he was six years old and shot a man dead, a man with black eyes who’d broke into the house when he was there alone with Sophia, three years old and screaming, Ramon out on a hunt and Helena at the doctor with the baby. "You’re a miracle worker, Diaz," hunters all over the country have told him with a gritty handshake when he’s helped them put something terrible in the ground. (When Shannon had kissed him under the bleachers for the first time, that had felt like a miracle, too. Her lips were soft and her hands had the same calluses as his, she had the same faint lines across the back of her arm from the testing bite of silver blades. Here was someone who knew, who he didn’t have to lie to, who liked him enough to press all that scarred and unscarred skin together with his. Things fell apart, over and over, in the years after that, but still. That first kiss. Not feeling lonely for maybe the first time ever in his life. Was it not a divine act?) He's 28 when he crawls out of his own grave, dirt clinging to clothes and flesh and coating his mouth, his teeth, stinging his eyes. He stumbles home on wobbly legs like a newborn thing, and maybe he is one, freshly alive as he is. He knocks on his front door however many days it's been since he'd watched his own blood mix with Shannon's on the floor of some old and haunted house — clinging to life long enough to see it start to coagulate because please, god, please, they have a kid at home — and after the holy water and the silver and iron and any other test anyone in the family can think of his abuela takes his face between her hands and weeps “Es un milagro! A miracle! A miracle!”  And in a week, in a barn somewhere outside El Paso, he will learn that this time she is right.

911 s7 e1 concept: we see buck in a strong, steady relationship with natalia. however, when we catch up with eddie, we find that in the past 8 months he has had a string of failed relationships. EVERYONE is joking about it. chimney, hen, christopher...they all think this is the funniest thing in the world. joke of the year. buck, however, never engages. this is like a small bit at the beginning, which we then mostly forget about as we get caught up with the rest of the characters and also some kick-ass emergencies. but then....last scene of the episode everyone is making fun of eddie yet again. everyone leaves the room except for buck. we sense some tension here. eddie, trying to break it, makes a self deprecating joke. instead of playing into this, buck takes it serious. tells eddie he's proud of him for putting himself out there and he'll get what he wants if he just doesn't stop trying. eddie opens his mouth to say something only for natalia to pop in the room and interrupt. buck exits with her, leaving eddie in silence.

eddie watches buck leave. longing look. looks away. mutters something about "never going to get that, though". it's a bit of a mystery. what is that? a relationship? natalia? buck?

(well, of course it's buck. but they'll leave us in suspense for now.)

episode ends. and the buddie slowburn has been doused with gasoline.....

Thinking about everyone hanging around in the station kitchen and Eddie's talking about something and looking at his phone and he holds out a hand for Buck to take but Buck is helping make breakfast so he gestures at Chim and Chimney takes his hand instead and it takes awhile for Eddie to notice, maybe he pulls the hand in for a kiss and goes ?? and Chimney just grins at him and Eddie laughs and they keep holding hands until breakfast is served

WIP Wednesday

Thank you @fiona-fififi for the tag!! I swear I was writing, but I came across this post by @astrallouis referencing "The Kiss of Life" photograph and Buck's post-lightning strike situation and woah!

So I'm sharing an art WIP- I'll likely use an early clean version of the sketch for a digital drawing.

Working Title: Love me til my heart stops

(I know 'This must be the place' is thee Bobby song, but the Laurel cover felt relevant here. I'm sure Cap would be happy to share! Maybe not if he notices Eddie's not wearing a harness. 🤷 I forgot ....)

Tagging @inferno-ontherocks (I know you have something 👀) @sluttyhenley @blondsak and anyone else who wants to share a WIP!
