Rafe’s been on edge all day—buried in meetings, calls that went on for far too long, deadlines that had him hunched over his desk with his fingers drumming into the keyboard all day long. You kissed his cheek during lunch, tried curling up beside him on the couch after dinner but he was rigid, wound so tight you thought he’d snap.
So, you retreated to your sanctuary—the shower.
Twelve steps, start to finish. Double-cleanse, scrub, shave, lotion, oil, mist perfume—half therapy, half-ritual. Something Rafe loves to tease you about but damn if he doesn’t love it.
You’re working through the last few steps, towel tucked around your chest as you moisturize when the bathroom door opens beside you.
Steam rushes past him as he steps inside but his eyes don’t meet yours, they flick past you, guiding him in the direction he needs to go, straight to the shower. He shrugs off his shirt and strips off his pants.
You look back at him, catching the sharp lines of his jaw and the furrow between his brows and you can tell he’s trying to be good. He’s trying to remind himself that he’s busy—that he’s stressed, because he is. But…

i hope chris can look back on his surprise video, the part of him saying “if i ever do this for a girl, shoot me in the face”, when he’s happy & found the love of his life, i hope he can just laugh at himself when he realizes how much he’s willing to do for the right woman.

you barely make it to the bathroom before you're on your knees, gripping the cold porcelain as your stomach churns. panic hits you faster than the nausea itself—your vision blurs, throat tight, the familiar terror crawling up your spine. you hate this. you can’t do this.
but then you feel him.
rafe’s behind you in seconds, dropping down beside you like it’s instinct. his big hands are already in your hair, gently pulling it back, his body warm against yours.
“shh, i got you, baby,” he murmurs, voice thick with concern, soft as velvet. “you’re okay. i know, i know, it’s scary. but i’m right here.”
your hands tremble as you try to hold yourself upright. you whimper, trying to swallow down the fear, and he immediately shushes you, brushing your hair back from your face.
“no, none of that, princess. you’re doing so good. so, so good for me,” he coos, kissing the side of your head. “just let it out, baby. i’ve got you. you don’t need to be scared.”
and when you finally gag and throw up, humiliated and shaking, he doesn’t flinch—not even a little. he just keeps whispering to you, rubbing your back, kissing your shoulder through your shirt.
“that’s it, there you go,” he says sweetly, like you’re a little kid who’s learning something new. “m’so proud of you, baby. so proud. you’re my brave girl, aren’t you?”
you start crying afterward—embarrassed, shaky, breath catching in your throat. rafe is already wiping your mouth with a tissue, then reaching for a warm washcloth. “no, no, baby. don’t cry. you didn’t do anything wrong, okay? look at me—hey, look at me.”
you glance up and he cups your face with those rough hands so gently, like you’re something precious.
“there she is. my pretty baby,” he whispers, brushing his thumb along your cheek. “you’re safe now, okay? i won’t let anything bad happen to you. not ever.”
he picks you up without a second thought, carrying you to the couch like you weigh nothing. tucks you in with a blanket, kisses your forehead, then disappears only to return with water, crackers, and a heating pad.
“let me take care of you now, yeah?” he says, kneeling beside you, holding the straw to your lips. “you were so good for me back there. the best girl.”
and even though you still feel shaky, and your body aches from the panic, there’s comfort in his voice, in his hands, in the way he talks to you like you’re the most important thing in the world.
“you’re my baby,” he whispers against your temple. “and i’ll always take care of my baby.”

you step out of the shower, the steam still swirling around you as you wrap a towel around your body. matt's right behind you, towel slung low on his hips, hair damp and messy. the room feels cozy, the soft glow of the bedside lamp casting a warm light over everything. it's quiet, peaceful, prompting a calming environment.
"come here, baby" matt says softly. he's already sitting on the edge of the bed, his towel discarded, dressed in his favourite pair of plaid pants that he always wears to bed. you smile at him as you cross the room, your hair still wet, dripping slightly against your shoulders.
"sit in front of me," he instructs, patting the space between his legs. there's something so tender in the way he says it, like he's done this a hundred times before and still loves every second of it. you settle yourself down, your back to his chest, and matt carefully gathers your hair in his hands, the gentle tug of his fingers sending a shiver down your spine.
"i’ll braid it for you, okay?" he murmurs, his voice low and soothing. "so it doesn't tangle overnight."
you close your eyes, leaning into his touch as his fingers work through your hair, detangling it slowly, carefully. the action feeling so intimate, the kind of small act that means so much more than words. you can feel the warmth of his body behind you, the steady rise and fall of his chest as he breathes, and the soft brush of his fingers as he gently combs through the strands.
"your hair's so soft," matt whispers, his breath warm against your ear. "i love it when you let me do this."
"i love it too," you reply, your voice soft, barely above a whisper. the feeling of him braiding your hair, the way he's so focused, so gentle-it makes your heart swell.
matt's hands are steady, his fingers deft as he weaves your hair into a neat braid, his touch light but firm. you can tell he's being extra careful, not wanting to pull too hard or hurt you. it's such a simple gesture, but it feels so special, so thoughtful.
when he finishes, he ties the end of the braid with a soft hair tie and leans forward, pressing a soft kiss to the back of your neck. "all done," he says, his voice laced with affection.
you smile, turning to look at him, your heart feeling impossibly full. "thank you," you whisper, pressing your lips on his, kissing him softly.
