my synagogue was set on fire last night during Shabbat at 3:00 AM in an arsonist attack.

no one was injured, which i am extremely grateful for. they have several security cameras, so there is a suspect in custody. the details and motivation haven't been shared, but it can be reasonably assumed to be a hate crime.

this was the first synagogue established in the state, the only one that's not hours away, and certainly the largest in the area. two Torah scrolls are destroyed beyond repair, 5 are damaged. the library where children have religious school and morning Shabbat service is held has been completely burnt down, much of that section of the building that's left is covered in soot and ash. the administrative offices were also lost.

our Tree of Life, which was for important life events like bar/bat/b'nei mitzvahs, was destroyed. i was just looking at it this past Tuesday while waiting for a meeting with my rabbi. it was dozens of bronze plaques in the shape of leaves with commemorations on them placed above a trunk. there is a photo of the wreckage that makes me cry every time i look at it.

we have a rescued scroll from Nazi-era Czechoslovakia (it is thankfully unharmed). we have a Holocaust memorial garden. we have names of dead loved ones displayed. memories in and on the walls. there are so many deeply meaningful and largely irreplaceable things here.

my rabbi was out of state for the last several days. i cannot imagine how he's feeling.

im fucking pissed at the police department. they said that they would patrol the grounds more often in light of the worldwide rise in antisemitism. I have not personally seen them once. they let the only area for our community to gather be set on fire.

i am exhausted. i am angry. i am thankful it is not any worse, because it easily could have been, but tonight i am grieving that little library full of vintage Jewish books.

The same Synogogue was also bombed in 1967. This is the best article I could find so far this soon after the fire.

yes, this is my synagogue. Beth Israel Congregation was firebombed by the KKK in 1967 along with the rabbi's house because he was an outspoken supporter of civil rights for Black Americans.

Nuance is dead, that's for sure.

What happened to Renee Good is horrifying and should horrify everyone.

It is also true that "Missing/Murdered White Woman Syndrome" is absolutely a thing. That the American public in general pays more attention to a crime against a white woman, than it does to women of color.

It is also true that, historically speaking, many social justice moments have involved the American public reacting with extra horror to the murder of a White Woman.

Because White Supremacy argues that it is all about protecting the White Woman, but the reality is very much that it is about protecting the power of a handful of wealthy, white men. Anyone and everyone else is fair game, but the illusion of it only being CERTAIN PEOPLE exists to keep the general public comfortable.

The murder of a pretty, friendly white woman demonstrates that Whiteness will not protect us. That if they feel comfortable shooting a white woman that was a stay-at-home mother that said "I'm not mad at you" just before being shot in the face, doing it on MULTIPLE videos including their own cell phone recordings, and then blatantly lying about it on television and on social media.....

Then absolutely no one is safe.

And for a lot of white people, that is a wake-up call to what minorities in this country already knew.

There's a very intentional lulling of white people in this country, a very intentional false sense of security and safety.

A lot of conservative people live in a bubble of "Us and Them", a tribalism where bad things happen to bad people, and because they aren't Bad People, nothing bad will happen to them or anyone they care about. That being white, being polite, being non-violent will protect them from State Violence.

That is one reason so many are clinging to the lies that she was some kind of "radical leftist operative" or a "murderous psycho" that "clearly tried to murder those poor agents". Because that helps maintain the illusion that bad things only happen to bad people, that being a Good White Person tm will protect you.

It won't.

Sadly, a lot of people only really care when the victim reminds them of themselves or someone they know.

So many people are going "She was just like me" or being reminded of their loved ones.

In a society that intentionally builds apathy by fooling people into believing that they are safe, it's very jarring when that illusion shatters.

Inasmuch as the narrative that “People only care about [X Issue] because the victim was White” can sometimes have a grain of truth, it is also extremely over-applied in a knee-jerk pseudo-intellectual way that is dehumanizing and gross. People do it regardless of how much it defies reality (as it has been towards Anne Frank, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the October 7th massacre) or how much a significantly more likely explanation might apply. I frankly find people’s need to play armchair sociologist in order to attribute ulterior motives to why people might care about the most clearcut and well-documented death at ICE’s hands before her body is even in the ground as ghoulish as it is unreasonable and self-defeating.

The reality is practically every aspect of this murder is notable. Renee Good was

Sure, someone shouldn’t need to do any of that for people to care about their death, and the absence of these factors in other cases doesn’t make their deaths more deserving or less tragic, but it just is significantly harder to gain widespread overwhelming traction with cases where the circumstances are murkier, or who was responsible for what is less obvious, or it happens behind closed doors due to criminal neglect than a case as clear cut and cut-and-dry as this one. The plausible deniability and maybes that might otherwise impede momentum just aren’t there. A lot of these factors were also present in George Floyd’s murder, which I’m sure contributed heavily to why his murder specifically was able to gain as much traction as it did, over other unrecorded or less undeniable instances of police violence against Black folks in America.

And this narrative that people only care about Renee Good because she “looks like them” glosses over how much her appearance and identity didn’t fit the mold of the average suburban WASP housewife. She was a visibly queer woman, whose appearance a) is absolutely being used by the right to build that image of a deranged leftist operative, and b) throws a big wrench in the idea that people only care about women who are like them.

Race is very clearly relevant to broader discussions of police brutality and specifically who ICE targets. But in this specific case, Renee Good’s skin color is hardly the 10th or 20th most significant difference between this shooting and other ICE shootings or deaths.

But more importantly, it’s just a callous and dehumanizing way to talk about someone’s murder. She’s not a list of qualities on a spreadsheet, she’s a human being that was gunned down in the most obvious and undeniable instance of wrongful violence from ICE. Dismissing that as “Missing/Murdered White Woman Syndrome” isn’t nuance. It’s just a gross and inhumane way to talk about someone who’s been murdered. People need to have some decorum.

Not queerbait: A cookbook has no soup recipes. You assumed there would be some based on vibes and wishful thinking. No soups were ever advertised or promised.

Also not queerbait: A cookbook that was advertised as containing soup recipes has soup recipes but not for the types of soups you like.
