The DOOM Spaniels

@doomspaniels / doomspaniels.tumblr.com

Do not look the hypno-spaniels directly in the eyes. 🥕 Tristan (b&w American cocker spaniel): birthday 2018-05-05; joined us 2018-09-08 🥕 Guinevere (red English working cocker spaniel): birthday 2020-04-18; joined us 2020-12-10 🥕 Yvaine (red and white American cocker spaniel): birthday 2007-12-27; adopted 2011-08-20; returned to the stars 2020-11-16 🥕 Merlin (buff English cocker spaniel): adopted 2015-09-09; gone away, gone ahead 2018-08-26 🥕 Guinevere's Royal Treasurer (GRT), she/her 🥕 Tristan's Fetch and Tug Buddy (TFaTB), he/him

Between morning meds and breakfast, Tristan wanders off for some morning Sniff Patrol of the house and grounds. Guinevere returns to guard Møthř (by her insistence). This does mean that Guinevere gets half an hour of totally exclusive Møthř scritchies, as much as Møthř can do.

You can probably see her shifting around to direct me to the right places to scritch. Guinevere has Opinions (tell us all about it, Gwyn!)

[Sound: swishing of fingers moving through fur]

Please enjoy some marvelous Tristan noises, as we experiment with an RC car. He was trying to get it to start running again (but it couldn't get very far). So much wagging, so many great noises, such terrible videography (my apologies). Please appreciate the Tristan boops on the car for extra delight 💞

Tristan had many opinions about whether the car should run farther, and they eventually became loud. I tried to make sure to stop before they became agitated, so there was still much wagging when I stopped him.

After I couldn't get the RC car to go more than a few feet on my grass, I brought it back inside to play with Tristan some more. That was going to be its job, to run around with Tristan since I can't--and Gwyn would chase them both. Tristan was really happy to chase it as much as was possible indoors today.

I don't want to do that often, though, too many tight turns aren't good for joints. I will see if there's anything I can do to get it to work outside, but I don't think so. Anybody know a lot about RC cars and want to answer some ignorant newbie questions?

~Guinevere and the Stretchy Party Favor, Take Approximately 25~

Gwyn brought the toy to me, so I gave her a treat and re-accordioned the bits that still compressed. I started to offer it to Tristan and Gwyn was outraged, trying to grab it away from him. Well, she did bring it to me, that is indeed fair! Even though, until now, she's looked at me like I am speaking in tongues when I tried to show her how to pull it.

So next I did offer it to Gwyn... without hesitating, she grabbed and yanked until it squornked! I was so surprised I dropped it, and took a moment to remember to give her a treat (dear reader, she reminded me🤣)

Next, I set up the phone to get a video and asked her t9 do it again. This is what we got.

[Video Description: Guinevere the red cocker spaniel pulls a pink party favor.

Video Sound: "You ready baby? You can do it! Grab, grab and pull. Pull!" *Guinevere squeaks* *toy makes ssshwooO0Oooouuuup sound* "GOOD J--"]

I had a new medical visitor this morning. Tristan was ANGERY. He didn't want to put down his pupsicle, but he needed to make angery woofles too.

[Tristan the black and white cocker spaniel lays in a dog crate licking something. As he licks, he makes quiet little wufs into the pupsicle. The sound has been amplified, but you still m8ght need to turn up your volume.]

~Words the Spaniels Know~

“Wave your hands in the air” (like you don’t care) (glide by the people / as they stop to look and stare)

Been working on duration too (“wait”), so eventually they can pose with their feet up on a block.

Next step: cue phrase “Word Up” (jump up onto the block)

[Video Description: Sound is muted. Two cocker spaniels sit behind a box. Yvaine bounces up, taps the top of the box with her front feet, then sits again. Video cut. Tristan has his feet up on the box; he enthusiastically tappity-taps the top of the box, then returns to sitting.]

I was searching old pics and found this video. Tristan so, so enthusiastic. I loves him. (Oh, Yvaine. The best, the very very best 💖)

I showed Tristan how to pull this tube toy to make a noise. Oh, he liked the noise. He became very enthused, popping his forefeet up on the table to reach it faster and everything. He tries to stuff the tube back in my hand once it's done, because he hasn't yet worked out that he can make the sound by himself, or tugging with his sister (so far she's too excited to do anything but bark). Again! Again!

Tristan heard a sound. Tristan wasn't permitted to go investigate. Tristan threw his head into the blankets, and emitted a muffled angry boof every so often until he forgot why he was sulking and angry. (few minutes, Short Attention Spaniels to the rescue)

now with sound!

Tristan gets squishy toys in their plastic package, and plays with them while trying to open the plastic. I give it to him for a few minutes a day when he really wants to play, then offer him a really impressive treat for giving it back. (Currently he likes freeze-dried yolks and blueberry yak cheese. He's a dog who loves his novelty, though, and liver treats will probably be exciting again in a few weeks.)

When he gets the plastic open to get to the squishy inside, he is so thrilled. Look at that tail go. Again, only for a few minutes, and (shameless bribery FTW) then he gives them back. If he's getting anywhere in tearing ig up, I discard it and give hima new one next time. Look at his delight! For ~50¢ a squishy, soooo worth it!
