I had a really really bad gnat problem, didn't matter how clean my apartment was they were always there, I think something nearby made them a persistent plague. The ended up getting into one of my reptile enclosures and decided his bioactive environment was perfect for them too. So did a little cobweb spider. It took her a bit of time but she decimated those gnats. She now lives fat and happy with a little colony she made all herself.
She is a cherished member of the family who moved with me when I did. I considered her free range before but... I guess she's an official pet now. She's like a cat. Chose her human and we look after each other.
I need to leave my apartment and go to work but there's a female Downy Woodpecker on my suet block pecking crumbs onto the ground where a female Carolina Wren is eating them #womensupportingwomen
But I can't leave because I would disturb them and they really need this right now (it's 3F and going to snow)

the way to tell if a chinese restaurant/grocery store is authentic and good, is they MUST have at least one item so seriously mistranslated you have no idea what it could possibly be from just reading it. if they do you know you're in for a treat.
chinese restaurant i used to order from pretty often had a "piros dátum torta" and it's not very hard to understand what it is if you translate it to english, but it DID trip me up at first. and yes the food was amazing.

In France if you suffer from hair loss as a teenage girl and cannot afford a real hair wig the school will try and force you to go to class bald. The school will make you buy a chemotherapy turban, you will buy two different so that the school can choose which one they prefer and you will prove that they are chemotherapy turban and not hijab but once you wear it they will change their mind and say it looks too much like a hijab and insist on you going bald or buying a real hair wig that you cannot afford.
If your doctor makes multiple documents confirming that you suffer from alopecia because of stress and the medicine you have to take for your epilepsy and that wearing a bonnet or something is recommended for your mental health as you’re not ready to go out bald in high school as a teenage girl, instead of admitting they are wrong the school will accuse the doctor of lying and report him to the Ordre des Médecins (equivalent of the General Medical council). Your doctor will find himself asking you for a document stating that you are not Muslim in order to defend himself and prove that no he wasn’t colluding with you so you could wear a substitute for hijab.

In France if you are a North African nurse at a public hospital and wear a fabric surgical cap they will try to make you remove it because apparently it’s a hidden hijab. They will accuse you of going against secularism and when you’ll argue that they are discriminating you by assuming you’re Muslim for a surgical cap on your head they will change their angle and claim that you should wear nothing on your hair because you wear the same surgical cap in multiple bedroom which is unhygienic apparently (which is a bullshit argument cause you wear the same scrub/uniform in different bedrooms as well). They will go as far as claiming that disposable scrub caps (you know the thin papery ones?) are not okay to wear in a hospital even if you change it regularly. And then they will fire you for a lack of hygiene because you wear a surgical cap.

All of that will be done in the name of secularism and women’s right despite having nothing do with either quite the opposite.
The teenage girl’s story is also not just about racism and Islamophobia it’s also about ableism as the girl is convinced that the real reason the school is trying to push her out is because she had an epilepsy crisis in class and nobody knew what to do and the school nurse was absent. It could have ended badly had her best friend not known what to do to help. Apparently it was bad enough to cancel class for the rest of the day and the teacher was shocked to the point of ending on sick leave.

hi i just learned that axolotls can metamorphose into terrestrial salamanders and my mind is fucking blown. like the way these kind of salamanders work is they hatch into little tadpoles, grow legs quickly, and then as adults they go through metamorphosis, their gills shrink and they grow lungs, their whole body changes, and they venture onto dry land.
except. if the aquatic environment is really nice, sometimes they can just say "mehh, i don't wanna, what if the outside is bad. i have everything here." and stay baby-shaped forever. individual salamanders can do it or not do it, but for the axolotl, the entire species did that. (i guess they had some amazing aquatic environments)
but, again. they didn't LOSE the capability to metamorphose. they just don't do it anymore. but sometimes, for some unknown reason, a dormant gene might activate... and the axolotl sheds its eternal baby-look, and becomes something entirely different.
this is Gollum. he was a regular black axolotl (bottom pic), until he decided not to be a regular axolotl anymore and instead become a shocking rarity his owner has barely even heard of before. what even.
something really interesting is that frogs despite having basically the same developmental mechanisms, don't do this. at all. there's no neotenous frog species, which is pretty weird to me, but it probably makes sense.
but since they have the same developmental mechanisms, the possibility is there. very rarely, a tadpole's developmental hormones get a little scrambled, as it can happen in all living organisms, and you get:
