its intense in mpls where i live and i keep trying to write a post but theres so much i could say. what i will say is don't want until your city is occupied by ICE like minneapolis to get involved.
that could mean getting involved in a local organization fighting for immigrants in your area. it could mean talking to your neighbors now, building community with those around you now so when people can't leave their homes because of ICE, you already know who may need support (which can be grocery delivery, taking kids to school whatever.) it could mean visiting local restaurants owned by communities ICE and financially supporting them now and knowing who will need your support if ICE activity increases in your area.
and dont give in to despair. its hard not to, with how visible every cruelty is through the internet. but whats less visible is how our neighborhood ICE watch chats have hit capacity because of how many people are joining. how many organizations collecting supplies to donate for families sheltering in place have to pause donations because of the overflow of support. the size and scale of our protests is pretty fuckin visible, but the people offering space for kids to come while our schools are shutdown because ICE is targeted them and making them unsafe is less visible. the signs, street art, posters making sure ICE knows no one wants them here. we are grieving but we are not isolating in that grief.
dont wait for your community to be in crisis. learn from the grassroots work already being done in other cities and start to build those connections now. fuck ICE. chinga la migra.
