Itβs crazy that countries on the edge of the Sahara desert are reversing desertification by just digging half circles
The ground in these places is too compact for water to soak in during wet season which leads to flooding but digging these holes gives the water a place to stop and soak in. And theyβre pushing back the desert with this. By just digging holes.
The new plants also help even more water soak into the ground which reduces flooding even more.
These places also give people places to grow food and graze animals like people are turning completely dry compact desert into a refuge for wildlife and plants and solving regional food insecurity just by digging holes.
The half-circles are called zaΓ―! They're a traditional farming practice in the Sahel desert, and their introduction + reintroduction can be largely credited to Yacouba Sawadogo, the man linked above! He reintroduced and innovated on the zaΓ― on his own farm in the 1980s, and did extensive outreach (along with scientist Mathieu OuΓ©draogo) to encourage other farmers to adopt them as well.
He also promoted the use of cordons pierreux, which are basically just lines of rocks to reduce erosion, preserve sediments, and increase water absorption.
Immensely cool dude. He's been a personal hero since I learned about him.
Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes donβt go feral like in the book.Β Itβs almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.
thereβs a timeskip
THEREβS A TIMESKIP
THEREβS A TIMESKIP
THEREβS A TIMESKIP
after losing control of the signal fire thereβs a FUCKING TIMESKIP and when the next chapter starts everyoneβs hair is several inches longer and their clothes have rotted to shreds and theyβre still just kind of chilling!!!!
IT TAKES THE TERRIBLE IMPERIALISM MIND-POISONED EXCESSIVELY BRITISH BOYS IN THE ACTUAL BOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMMIT A SINGLE ACT OF INTENTIONAL VIOLENCE, EVEN THE ONE (1) CHILD WRITTEN AS AN ACTUAL SOCIOPATH
AND then when they DO turn on each other it is because
THEREβS AN UNSPECIFIED WORLD WAR HAPPENING
AND A PILOTβS CORPSE CRASH LANDS ON THE ISLAND POST-DOGFIGHT AND THE CHILDREN MISTAKE THE PARACHUTE FOR A MONSTER AND SPIRAL INTO PARANOIA
BECAUSE CHILDREN INHERIT THE LEGACY AND TRAUMA OF VIOLENCE FROM THE ADULTS WAGING WAR AROUND THEM
HURR DURR IN THE REAL WORLD IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LIKE IN LORD OF THE FLIES -
IT DIDNβT HAPPEN THAT WAY IN LORD OF THE FLIES EITHER YOU JUST HAVENβT READ IT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IF EVER AND DONβT REMEMBER WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK

yes. yes he did. iβm also gonna direct you to the real life βlord of the fliesβ which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until theyβd cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. hereβs a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.
i read about this in rutger bregmanβs human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you donβt want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.

what does it feel like to do heroin
A reply from [deleted]
Actually this is an obvious question but itβs not what you might think. Let me explain it to you, Iβve been an opiate addict for a long time and tried many drugs. Drugs that are βuppersβ have the most βobviousβ euphoria. For example if you take adderall/coke/meth/speed/MDMA you will get this shining bright euphoria, self confidence, energy, and other drug-specific feelings (for meth like you are king or for MDMA like you love everyone). However, you owe these drugs back what they delivered to you. After a meth binge, or lots of MDMA use, or staying up all night on coke you will feel like shit. To an extent this aspect is similar to an alcoholic hangover.
On the other hand, for many people who experiment with heroin they are underwhelmed (not including IV usage, but most experimenters rarely ever IV first time). They just feel good, chill, happy, but they feel like this spooky drug βheroinβ hasnβt delivered. They are just mellow. Oh obviously it has all been a lie they will think. Heroin isnβt spooky, itβs chill. Itβs not addictive like everyone else thinks. It doesnβt make you do stupid shit or stay up all day and hallucinate like amphetamines or coke. It doesnβt empty your serotonin like MDMA or give you a hangover like alcohol. People tend to just think oh, what a nice drug.
So the next day they wake up and everything is normal. No headache or shitty feelingβjust a slight afterglow of that nice feeling. Oh it was cheap as well! It only cost $10 for a whole night of being high! I thought people said heroin was expensive? And then next weekend comesβ¦ There are all these drugs I could do but I liked heroin. It didnβt fuck me up,βI could still think clearly. No hangover. No feeling like shit later. I still was awake. It just made me happy and content with life. Oh and itβs only $10! Well, I should get some more for the whole weekend. This is great! I will use Heroin on the weekends now!
Now letβs say this person works and has responsibilities. He knows he canβt go into work drunk, or on MDMA, or high. So he doesnβt. Itβs actually simple. But heroinβ¦ Well the user might actually find they do better work on heroin. Instead of being sad or grumpy or depressed with his jobβ¦ he is justβ¦ happy. Mellow. Content. Everything is fine and the world is beautiful. Itβs raining, itβs dark, I woke up at 5:30AM, Iβm commuting in traffic. I would have had a headache, I would have been miserable, I would have wondered how my life took me to this point. This point Iβm at right now. But no, no, everything is fine. Life is beautiful. The rain drops are just falling and in each one I see the reflection of every persons life around me. Humanity is beautiful. In this still frame shot of traffic on this crowded bus I just found love and peace. Heroin is a wonder drug. Heroin is better than everything else. Heroin makes me who I wish I was. Heroin makes life worth living. Heroin is better than everything else. Heroin builds up a tolerance fast. Heroin starts to cost more money. I need heroin to feel normal. I donβt love anymore. Now Iβm sick. I canβt afford the heroin that I need. How did $10 used to get me high? Now I need $100. That guy that let me try a few lines the first time doesnβt actually deal. Oh I need to find a real dealer? This guy is a felon and carries a gunβhe can sell me the drug that lets me find love in the world. No this isnβt working, I need to quit.
To answer your question, heroin feels nice. Thatβs all, it just feels very nice. You can make the rest up for yourself. Attach your own half-truths to this drug that will show you the world and for a moment you will feel as clever as Faust.
Edit: Thank you for the kind words. I received help and Iβm doing well now. Luckily I was able to pull up and get help right before I entered the deadly downward spiral. Some of my friends have not done as well. Sorry to steal the limelight from OP

Reading that was more haunting than any anti-drug campaign that Iβve been exposed to. Thanks. A lot.
End of reddit post.
The third image are tags on tumblr. They read #anti-drug campaigns should be run by recovering addicts #cause like #how are you gonna talk honestly about how a drug affects your life if youve never done it #how can you really communicate what it does to your life if you ignore the reasons people do drugs in the first place? #i dont think anyoneβs gonna believe you when you say a drug is bad if you never acknowledge the way the drug makes you feel good #tags

The thing that kills me about this, is that it frankly discusses the general misery and malaise that we put up with in our regular sober lives, and it says straight up that the drug makes it BEARABLE. This is the clearest and most straightforward description of βdrug addiction is not a failure of personal strength and character, it is an attempt to medicate and make survivable the horrifying sociocultural conditions that we are being forced to accept as the normal cost of living.β Itβs the Rat Park drug addiction hypothesis demonstrated in humanity.

President Trump is now claiming that one reason he is pushing to acquire Greenland is that he didnβt win the Nobel Peace Prize, according to a message he sent to Norwayβs prime minister over the weekend.
Jonas Gahr Store, Norwayβs leader, received the text message on Sunday, three European officials familiar with the matter said on Monday.
βConsidering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America,β according to the message, which was first published by PBS.
In the message, Mr. Trump also questioned Denmarkβs claim to Greenland, saying, βThere are no written documents,β and adding, βThe World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you!β
Greenland has been part of the Danish Kingdom for more than 300 years, and world leaders have condemned Mr. Trumpβs insistence that the United States take over the territory, a giant icebound island in the Arctic region.
Mr. Store said in a statement that Mr. Trumpβs text message was a response to a message that Mr. Store sent to Mr. Trump on Sunday asking to speak to him about the crisis over Greenland and about Mr. Trumpβs threat of using tariffs to pressure Denmark into selling Greenland to the United States, which Denmark has refused to do.
βAs regards the Nobel Peace Prize, I have on several occasions clearly explained to Trump what is well known, namely that it is an independent Nobel Committee, and not the Norwegian government, that awards the prize,β Mr. Store said.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly challenged Denmarkβs claims to Greenland, but in decades-old agreements that the United States has signed with Denmark, the United States has explicitly recognized that Greenland is part of the Danish Kingdom.
i was so sad, i drew a little bat so i wouldnβt be sad. and now i am no longer sad.

here is a little bat to banish your sadness
This nice little bat reminds me of this other nice little bat who was drawn in the 1200s:

This is the only website where I routinely see people say things like βoh this reminds me of something I recently saw from the 1200sβ
why is this framed all cutesy??

Times like these I remember that Malcolm X quote about healing and how it requires acknowledging the knife is there. Things like "this isn't who we are" and "this is un-American" and "what are we? [insert another country]??" reveal a deep seated denial of American history and state-sponsored domestic terror that I'm just not gonna entertain anymore from leftists over the age of twenty.
"If you stick a knife nine inches into my back and pull it out three, that is not progress. Even if you pull it all the way out, that is not progress. Progress is healing the wound, and they haven't even begun to pull out the knife. They won't even admit the knife is there."
