This family and suborder contain just two extant species from two genera (Acanthisitta and Xenicus).

Ok Rifleman don't really need the support at this point but they're one of my favorite birds of all time so I feel the need to pitch in regardless.

Their maori name Titipounamu is named after titi (the sound of their call) and pounamu (treasure). (So basically squeaky treasure). They're treasured birds in maori culture and known as the messengers of Tāne - the god of the forest.
