Please take your time recovering, I am so sorry to hear about what happened to you on whats supposed to be a good day. Please drink lots of water and get as much vitamin c as you can!! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Thank you very much.
I am grateful for those that care about me — I am also thankful that my partner is not as sick as me right now & is able to meet some of my needs. He helps me get water/bathroom/etc.
I appreciate the care & I am trying the best I can.
i love your art and am so sorry to hear about what you've been going through with your health & family situation lately, i truly hope things get easier for you soon 🫂
Thank you very much, It means a lot that people took the time to listen to me and my struggles.
It feels like everything just keeps getting worse, sadly — and I started the new year off terribly. I hope it does get better.
where do you find names for your characters ? Ive been researching good names for my character from Somalia and simply cant find anything good
Well, usually I break it down linguistically & culturally / ethnically.
Example research questions:
• What ethnic groups live there? Is there cultural groupings? What makes these ethnicities distinct?
• What languages do they speak? How many? What culture speaks what languages?
• What are the religions of the area? What are the spiritual beliefs of the area?
• linguistically, how are their names said? Is there grammatical rules that differentiate between other languages?
• What is the meaning behind the name? Is there significance in the meaning / who gives them the name, is it passed down?
These are only a few questions you should research when choosing a name. I know it may seem like a lot at first, but it helps strengthen your knowledge about different cultures and languages & will overall help you understand your characters better.
as someone who is becoming more and more disabled and is starting to switch from a cane to a rollator, your art is very comforting!!! seeing all these people with cool fashions and well,,, happy! there’s a narrative in a lot of media that being disabled is a miserable experience but disabled people can live fulfilling lives like your art shows!!
Thank you so much 🫶🏽❤️
It means a lot! I try my best to have nuance in my depictions of disabled ocs, like it can feel miserable a lot of the times, but that doesn’t mean you can’t also be fufilled & do things for yourself and your community.
I’m glad I can provide comfort to those newly disabled & with progressive disabilities— I also have a progressive disability so I try my best to have viewpoints from others.
if you're up for it could you tell us some more about Patime? I really like her design!
Her likes, dislikes, anything!
I’ll give you her description on toyhouse!
Patime پاتىمە • Uyghur version of “Fatima” • She/Her • Uyghur Hijabi from Xinjiang • unlabeled sexuality
Works with Saad at his family Bakery / Cafe. She helps bake in the kitchens as well as make deliveries. She loves the smell of freshly baked croissants. Najib loves hanging out with her, and doesn’t know that she is secretly baby-sitting him when Saad is busy.
When she still grew up on Xinjiang, before moving to the US, she was forced into a state-run boarding school due to her parents being put into labor facilities away from her. Due to the human-rights violations and abuse — she was physically abused and tortured when “punished” for minor mistakes — she lost her left eye, and left leg below the knee due to infection and sepsis. She has both a prosthetic eye and a prosthetic leg/foot, only was able to get when she left at 21. She has not been in contact with her parents since she was a very young child and has no idea where they are or if they are still alive. This pains her a lot.
One of her current dreams is to get her very own moped.
i love how you show diversity in your OCs! do you plan on drawing any of them in clothes native to their culture? it would be really cool to see ≧ ᗜ ≦ !
Thank you!
Yes, I definitely have been wanting to do this — what has me slow with it currently is the research! 🙏
But yes! This is in the works & I will be doing it in the near future.
Any tips / resources on how to research different ethnicities and disabilities. Im afriad im not very good at findinf actually good websites to do research.
Hmm, this is a tough one because there are, like. thousands of different ways to go about it. I can try my best to suggest ways to go about it, though.
for disabilities:
• have a specific symptom you’re curious about? Search it. With things like any search engine (like google) you can always search something like, for example, “what disorders have paralyzed legs?” And medical & academic websites will give a long list of every disorder (or most) that have that as a symptom of their disability.
• Start off slow with your searches, you don’t have to jump right in knowing every disorders name — that’s impossible. Don’t hold yourself to impossible standards! Start with a small search & then expand it further.
• Once you learn the name, or disorder you want to research, start searching that name in medical research studies, journals, etc. if you want personal experiences you could also look up youtube or tiktok of those that have it too, and listen to them.
For ethnicities:
• similarly to disabilities, start off slow. What area of the world do you want to research first? Asia? Europe? Africa? Then, is there a specific country? Once you figure that out, keep narrowing down your searches. A good search is always “what ethnicities live in (country)” or “what ethnicities are indigenous to (blank)”.
• Once you figure out the basics of what ethnic group you want to research, search that specifically. Many history books written by certain ethnicities exist, visit your local libraries, museums, and other academic journals online.
• most importantly: listen to people of that ethnic group. Go into this study session with the knowledge that you know nothing. Have humility, know you are ignorant and be respectful. You are there to learn. It’s extremely important to not have an entitlement to an ethnicity you are not apart of, you are an outsider looking in, and that’s OKAY! Nobody in this world is every single ethnicity at the same time.
• be respectful! We are all human, we need to celebrate & acknowledge our differences.
That’s all I have for now, I hope this helps in some capacity.
I didn't know that you have a character with ME/CFS and it makes me so happy. I love your characters already and you inspire me a ton, but seeing a character who has the same condition as me makes me extra happy!!
That’s great to hear!
I’m super glad to be able to give you some representation & recognition. I know it’s a disorder with a lot of ableists that spread misinformation about — so I think it’s super important to show it in the light of how it really is, disabling.
do you happen to have any north african and or maghrebi region characters ? im from there and never see characters like me
your art is truly beautiful btw. all the different outfits are so so cool. your pinterest boards must be awesome
Tilelli!
She is Algerian (& sephardic) ! They/she, has OCD & Endometriosis (stage III).
I absolutely adore her design so so much! ❤️ i want to make more north african ocs in the future, I have many oc’s in the works with minimal designs & just concepts rn, but hopefully they can be created into a full-fledged idea soon!
Hi ! I'm wondering if you have any tips on how to draw power wheelchairs. They always look off when I draw them and hardly anyone draws them with out it being f3t1sh content so Im just looking for some tips.
Hello!
I think the major thing that helps me the most is being a powerchair user so I have first-hand reference, but let me think of tips. . .
• when drawing a powerchair (or any wheelchair, for that matter) the best way to look at it first is through parts. Analyze and Identify the parts that create the chair (ex: Motor, Back, footplate , Castors, head-rest).
• Identify why your character is in the powerchair, what do they need it for, and what accommodations does it provide? This is important because some powerchair users have more physical needs than others (Ex: some need assistance in holding their full body upright with add-ons, straps, or special curved pieces) and it will affect their chair, as every powerchair is often custom (unless it’s a foldable / travel or scooter).
• remember: this is an extension of their body and movement, they need to look semi-comfortable in the chair (depending on disability, they may never “look” fully comfortable, but many disabled people in powerchairs /aren’t/ and thats also important to remember — you’re aim for a powerchair is to help, assist, and accommodate for movement & mobility, without further hurting or straining the body).
• Don’t be afraid to show their disability. Their disability is a part of them & their life — it’s a very important part of them and their experience with the world, some powerchair users may have spasticity or dystonia or muscle contractions, etc, that may look different than able bodied or even other disabled people with different needs.
That’s all i can think of right now, but I hope this can help even a little bit 🩷
Hello! I was wondering if you’ve ever drawn a character with anterior AFOs?
I’m a full time wheelchair user, now with anterior AFOs, and I can’t help but feel a bit self conscious since the bulk of my brace is in front haha. Your art has made me feel more at home in my skin as my disability has progressed. Thank you for all you do 🤟🏽
Sadly, I haven’t yet made an OC with AFO’s, but I have drawn an AU of haikyuu with a headcanon of someone who uses AFOs!
I will definitely keep it in mind for future OC’s!
People writing "they can't be ethnicity X and from region Y at the same time!" have apparently never heard of migration or of mixed race people.
So many people don’t actually understand race =/= ethnicity & that they are different things + culture is ALSO different, because you can raised in one culture but different racially than others in the same culture. These “neat little boxes” people like to categorize people in doesn’t work and falls apart the minute you think of any little bit of nuance.
+ a lot of people know very VERY little on the ethnic & minority groups of western & central asia (unless they live there). You can tell them that there are 15+ ethnic groups that make up west asia but they only will know 1-2 of them.
Just sad when people think in such little boxes and can’t seem to conceptualize how diverse and vast the world is & people as a whole. The whole “categorize into neat little boxes” is a tool of colonialism & facism.
It’s okay to embrace our differences & similarities. At the end of the day we are all humans and deserve respect, the least others can do is try to understand and unlearn their bigotry or prejudice — or ignorance!
I’m Sorry if this is worded weirdly! I hope this makes sense 🩷
i'm so sorry about that racist asshole in your inbox earlier. i hope these questions are more fun! which fashion subcultures have you had the most fun researching/drawing? and which ones were the most difficult to find info/references for?
Haha, no worries, I think it’s sometimes cathartic to tell people like that to “fuck off”, and then go back to my life like usual.
I think one of subcultures I had the most fun researching was Vkei, simply because of the music aspect of it and how it drives each subgenre of the subculture. The aspect of the lyrics & music weaving into its very own styles is very cool! This could be said the same for most subcultures though, like… Goth, Punk, Country, HipHop, etc etc. I think it was so fun to research and draw because it’s so different from what I normally do. My usual style is a lot of colors, softs or even muted but a lot! Soft edges, etc etc, and vkei is often not that at all — especially the bangyao / bangya fashion! I’m still learning too, I never feel like I’m ever “done learning” because there is always something new that I didn’t know!
I think the style I have the hardest time with is Lolita & Mori Kei. Mori kei specifically because of the layers & often include things like knit and lace — BOTH REALLY DIFFERENT AND DIFFICULT TO DRAW!!!! Otherwise, I always really love the vibe of it, it makes me feel warm & like a fairy from tinkerbell or something. Lolita is the hardest to find references to actually, FOR ME AT LEAST, because of the different rules to the coords & making jt look /good/. Like you could add every aspect of a coord but the real test is if it /looks good/, you know?
Thank you for asking! It’s a nice distraction to answer too, as I have been sick for 12 days with the flu, so I’ve been incredibly ill and idle in bed resting.
"west/central asian jew" so..... a jew and not west/central asian then? cause i generally wouldn't consider jews to be either of those things. are you both west and central asian? are you a convert?
Bro, this is so invasive. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about or what ethnic groups are.
I am specifically a west & central asian jew — I come from (ethnically) Jewish families from west & central asia.
You are genuinely so stupid if you think white people are the only jews in the world. Fuck off.
Genuine question, whats Dyscalculia? I heard of Dyslexia before but not that one :0
It’s a learning disorder that impacts arithmetic & math-related tasks!
It affects the person by making it harder to understanding number-related things: which also includes things like reading a clock or managing money!
In the same way dyslexia also has problems with left/right or spatial distances, so does dyscalculia! I also know that mental math is near impossible & a lot of people with dyscalculia need a calculator for all their math work.
My partner has dyscalculia!
His words are basically “think dyslexia but make it numbers”.
oh! You have dyslexia characters but no dyscalculia?
I love your art though! Wonderful!
I do have characters with dyscalculia? I’m not the biggest fan at the passive aggression in this message but i’ll take it in good faith that it’s not how you meant it to come across.
Prathyusha (one of my OCs) has dyscalculia. Perhaps next time, just ask if I do, and I can give you an answer because not all of my OCs info is on tumblr!
