I can’t speak for other social media webbed sites but I really enjoy how tumblr seems to just completely spin a wheel on whatever media is hot right now. Like yeah sometimes it’s a new show that’s big and actively coming out but also sometimes there will be a solid month where half my dash is Columbo memes. Defy authority. Get really into an book from the 1800s. Watch shows that haven’t aired in 40 years. Celebrate the anniversary of the Boston Molasses Flood. Become unmarketable

Do you know how weird it feels to casually make future plushie plans and feel like I’m thriving with my art career while ICE is threatening to go door to door for “immigrants” and “criminals” (visibly brown people) and I have to carry proof I’m American with me every time I go out? I say this specifically here because I know it’s a majority white American website. Like I already thought of who I would call and go stay with if I were to be deported lol. I’ve soothed myself with “maybe it wouldn’t be so bad as long as I don’t get shot at or disappear”. And it’s just annoying because my white peers do not have shit like this weighing on their mind, they can choose to just fucking draw
I cannot emphasize how much I’m literally a US citizen who speaks good english (with an accent, but it’s something) and these are the thoughts I’m having. Imagine how it feels when you’re actually an immigrant and you can barely parse what the masked trigger-happy asshole with a gun is screaming at you.
I’m an Indigenous person who gets mistaken for Hispanic on a daily basis because Indigenous x Italian= olive complexion, dark hair/eyes and features that aren’t purely Eurocentric
When ICE came into my job I was terrified. I felt like I was going to be sick. I work with primarily immigrants (non Hispanic, but still) and our company policy is to answer their questions but try not to let them in the back rooms without a warrant. I’m a manager. I had to be the one to handle it.
I was sweating the whole time. I had forgotten my ID in my wallet, which I left at home because my mom was watching my child, so in case she needed to get anything. I had no proof I was a citizen. They kept asking me questions about myself, and my one coworker with an “ethnic” name. The woman kept looking me up and down. My name is a European name originally but has become very common in the Hispanic community (think Mary or Angel ((though yes I know Angel is for boys/men)) ).
I’m certain that the main, maybe only, reason they didn’t ask for my ID (that I again didn’t have) or arrest me is because she commented on my first name. I told her it was a family name, just like my French middle name. She repeated my very common, very White, middle name. I confirmed it. She visibly relaxed before chatting for a moment. Then the left.
When they finally left, I sat in the back and cried. I had been thinking I was about to never see my family again that entire time. I was just at work.
I’m trying to create art and live my life. My writing/art career is finally starting to pick up, and despite being a citizen, being born here, being on my fucking ancestral land, I’m in a constant fear that ICE will take me.
They’ve done it to other Indigenous women who they hold for weeks or “lose”.
Apparently ICE now has agents posing as utility workers to get into people's homes. The electric and gas companies have posted information on how to tell if it's one of their workers, and numbers to call to confirm whether they've sent someone to do utility work on your house.
Stay safe, friends.
Some people have shared stories of suspicious “sales representatives” knocking on homes, asking about the home owners and who lives there, fishing for phone numbers, but do not provide business cards, company id, company phone numbers, etc when asked.
They come in pairs, never one person though one may hag back a bit. They have been seen using cars with significantly tinted windows, no business logos anywhere on the vehicle, or parking close to the home they walked up to only to drive away right after without visiting other homes, almost as if they’re not real sales people.
True door to door salespeople need a sort of peddler’s license, subject to city and county law, to solicit at your door. You can ask to see this permit. If they don’t provide one or make an excuse, they are likely bogus.
They wear a jacket with a company logo but likely don’t wear name tags and the Don’t provide id.
Tell them you’ll call the company about a noncompliant representative. Make them leave. Better yet not to open the door to them, and tell them nothing.
Actual sales reps also generally do follow “no soliciting” signs. Be aware, be safe, don’t give out your information or that of others under duplicitous means.
Where I live, solicitors don’t follow “No soliciting signs”. We have two and still get bothered. We’ve called the city, companies, etc, and never can get them to stop. This has been a constant issue for about a decade in this area. Even when we’ve had a literal closed gate, they break it coming in or stepping over it. It’s happened more than once. They almost never wear the lanyards with their city permit. They say they don’t need one (especially religious groups). They almost always come in groups of two or three.
Why, besides being extremely annoying, is this bad in this case scenario? You can’t tell at first if it’s ICE or not. This post is correct. The best thing to do is to either:
1) not open the door. You’re under no legal obligation. Even if they end up announcing themselves as ICE. They can’t do anything without a warrant, and per your fourth amendment right, unless they produce a physical search warrant for you to see, which ICE almost never has without the police being involved. If they have an administrative warrant, just say “You don’t have my permission to enter my home”. Record it. An administrative warrant is signed only by an ICE official and doesn’t give them consent to enter your home. It’s just basically an arrest warrant for one specific individual.
2) tell them to leave immediately. You don’t want what they’re selling and don’t want them on your property. Even if you’re renting, you have a right to your private property. Again, even if they end up revealing their ICE no judge signed search warrant? No legal right to be there.
3) ask to see their permit. If they don’t have one, or say they don’t need it, call the non emergency police number. You have a sign or signs up. They are trespassing and not following city regulations. They can get a citation. At least hopefully it’ll scare them off. Likely if they reveal to the police they’re ICE they won’t, but they could.
Get a RING doorbell if you can, everyone. It’s come in handy about at least two instances with the police where they lied about what they said later already. The police don’t pay attention enough to know they’re being recorded. You think ICE is any better?
Hate it when TikTok farm cosplayers and cottagecore types say stuff like "I'm not going to use modern equipment because my grandmothers could make do without it." Ma'am, your great grandma had eleven children. She would have killed for a slow cooker and a stick blender.
I’ve noticed a sort of implicit belief that people used to do things the hard way in the past because they were tougher or something. In reality, labor-saving devices have historically been adopted by the populace as soon as they were economically feasible. No one stood in front of a smoky fire or a boiling pot of lye soap for hours because they were virtuous, they did it because it was the only way to survive.

If you're in the US military or National Guard, and are given an illegal or unconstitutional order, the GI Rights hotline (1-877-447-4487) is there to help give you the support you need to do the right thing by refusing it. It would be good to think about this now before it becomes a live issue for you and it would be smart of you to memorize that number.

can non natives stop acting surprised and performatively jokey "uhh what lol!" about ice going after native americans. theyve been doing this for years and it ramped up last year and i had to hear all the stupid "uhhhh where will u deport them to 😜 silly republicans!" comments as if its not always been about detaining torturing murdering using as slave labor scattering communities through fear and intimidation etc. be an adult and act with maturity please. its not quirky or confusing its directly in line with americas racism and white supremacy to make sure native americans are eradicated
I think it's notable also particularly in the Minneapolis context that of the 6 or so (US) Native people I have heard of being detained in the past few days there, at least half were unhoused. This context is important esp given the recent history (I can't remember the year but starting sometime when I lived there from 2016-2020) of police violently dismantling encampments of Native unhoused people. the Native population in Minneapolis is like 5% but Native people make up almost half the unsheltered homeless population, iirc. the ICE harassment of tribal citizens is not of course limited to unhoused Natives but I think it's important to see the connections of how these developments are connected to previous and ongoing violence against unhoused people
