making good posts used to be a thing insane people did. and now it is the only possible way to advance in a career in hundreds of professional industries

if youre a hairstylist you gotta advertise it on instagram. tattooist. instagram. writer. performer. visual artist. therapist. all on instagram. lots of bars make their bartenders advertise their shifts on story posts to try and lure customers in, these days. every fucking job you can possibly do, you have to be a personal social media manager for, and be as active in the world of digital representation and engaged in the discourse as only the most suicidal graduate students of 2012 were

This is actually one of the biggest things stopping me from trying to publish my writing, either trad or self-pub. I Do Not Want to Fucking Market. No Marketing. Marketing Bad. I cannot talk to the public, what part of "sat down at a computer to create a fake universe every day for years and enjoyed it" do you not understand. If I knew how to make people like me I wouldn't be a writer.

Let me tell you a story.

I am an archeologist. I specialize in a somewhat obscure but by no means boring or meaningless Neolithic culture in Germany.

It has a Wikipedia page. A well curated, surprisingly extensive Wiki page that encapsulates all the important information about the culture, including literature references for further research.

One day, we asked Chat GPT about this culture. W were curious which details it would get wrong.

ALL OF THEM, except for the fact that it's a culture in present day Germany.

It didn't even get the chronological time frame wrong and called it a celtic culture.

When we told it it's wrong, it came at us with made up literature sources. Literally made up. It took two well known German archeologist who weren't even active at the same time, added a year - both were already dead - and sold that as source.

And it LITERALLY would only have had to quote Wikipedia to get everything right.

THAT is how unbelievably shitty and wrong all those AIs are.

They are making shit up. They are not sourcing information, they're just slapping words together by their most like relative occurance.

Do not trust ChatGPT or any other so-called AI ever.

watching 90s-2000s tv is crazy because it’s like wow. there used to be good writing and acting and more than 10 episodes per season and a new season every year. we really had it all.

why are all the actual real human jobs like baker and florist and childcare worker barely paying livable wages but the fake jobs like ai specialist boot licker or marketing campaign dick sucker making six figures

ⓘ Tip If you feel unfulfilled by how you spent your time today, you can stay up late to try to combat the sense of dissatisfaction. This will ensure that you feel even worse tomorrow.

One of the many perils of engaging with Internet Discourse is that sometimes you realize after the fact that the person you were responding to is a literal child who has mistaken their first big feeling about a wildly complex adult topic for an informed opinion, at which point you have to just stare wearily into the middle distance like: ah, yes, this is my cosmic punishment for having once also been fourteen and convinced I knew everything.

Like. I'm not saying teens shouldn't have access to these conversations or that they should be forced to identify themselves by age, because the negatives in both instances profoundly outweigh the positives. But I do think that, regardless of age, we should collectively start reintroducing a cultural respect for the idea that some people know more than you; that having feelings about something is not the same as understanding it; and that, while engaging in debate can be a good way to improve your grasp of a topic, this doesn't apply if your starting position is a baseline level of hostility towards anything that doesn't line up with the little you already think you know. There's no shame in being less knowledgeable about something than others - by definition, everyone starts out with Baby's First Opinion! - but you do need to understand that it is Baby's First Opinion. You have to want to learn, and you simply can't do that if you've mistaken knowing that a given issue exists for properly comprehending it.
